    2. Howard Snyder
    3. Thanks to all who responded to my letter about the FTM. I found out I am not alone in this ,and quite A few people have had the same thing happen ... I will not knowingly download anything connected with FTM. , and still do not like the idea that FTM attaches files to my genealogy program . I guess their next step will be to reach into our computers and download our files to their files ... they would like that . The only real answer that I see,is to have your Genealogy {FTM} on A computer which never goes online . but who can afford two of these things ?? Howard Snyder Gordon Pa.

    2. John W. Sharp
    3. Howard, When you downloaded the file, FTM opened it as you asked it to do. It didn't replace your own family file on your hard disk, it just opened up the new file within the program for viewing. You would then have been able to go to File on the menu bar within the FTM program and clicked "Open Family File..." Then you would have gotten a window with whatever *.ftw files you have and if you double clicked on the one you wanted, that file would have then replaced the downloaded one you were viewing. Tell us more about the shortcut you created. Was it a shortcut to FTM or directly to your personal file (as in to "personalfile.ftw")? Is this a shortcut you had created on your desktop? I have gone into the file and deleted it but my shortcut no longer worked ..I had to create A new shortcut to my original file which stayed on file . {thank goodness} so when you are using Family Tree Maker you have to be careful what you download .. I have written to FTM and complained but I do not expect it to change . I don't think I did anything to cause this .. Howard Snyder Gordon Pa.

    1. Sitlers
    2. Sarah Williams
    3. I am trying to find any informations the Sitler surname. They are the descendants of the Baron von Sitler of Germany. I know many of his descendants settled in the Berks Co, region of PA. I am trying to find any lines that ended on th western portion of the state. My line, Charles and his son Elmer were born and/or lived in the Crawford, Erie, and Warren County area of PA. I was told that there were many in Philadelphia and Columbia counties in the 1870 Census. Does anyone know of any of these Sitlers moving to NorthWest PA? Thanks Sarah Williams -- If you cannot get rid of the family skeleton, you may as well make it dance. George Bernard Shaw

    2. Hiya Listers, This was posted to one of the lists I am on and I believe it is well worth posting. Please note the following: Thanks, Bob Puckett List manager for PAMONTOU & PACOLUMB mailing lists. From: Linda Emerson [mailto:lindae@mlode.com] Sent: Friday, March 09, 2001 10:29 AM To: CASANFRA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Genealogy Spam Update It looks like the fictitious Family Discovery genealogy service has moved to Prodigy now. I contacted Prodigy this morning and they have asked that anyone who receives solicitation email from familydiscovery.com to take the following steps immediately: 1) Forward the entire Family Discovery message to: abuse@prodigy.com 2) Include the following information (most of which was provided by Rita from the Oconto County, WI list): Please note that the attached message is now being sent through your ISP service. They have been reported to various State Attorney General's Office on computer fraud, but it is hard to catch up with them. Originally the "company" linked to free information sites and placed the pages in "frames" so that it looked like it was their own work. Customers paid for that information. The scam, now, is paying for the free information links and then they "move" frequently and leave their paid-up customers without services. 3) Post these same instructions on any other lists today so that Prodigy has a better chance of finding the spammers. -- Linda Emerson Coordinator - Union Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania http://www.rootsweb.com/~paerie/townships/Union.htm

Eight children of James THORNTON (1761) and Sarah JACKSON are: Eli (ca. 1786), husband of Abigail ?; Mary (ca. 1786/90), wife of Isaiah BARTON; Michael (ca. 1789/06), husband of Catherine Biddleman; Hannah (ca. 1794/99), wife of Isaac Green; Elizabeth (ca. 1794/99); James (ca. 1799); Margaret (ca. 1800/04); Ephraim Jackson (ca. 1804/10). The only child of Eli that I have is Thomas J. (ca. 1826). His brother Michael had six children: Cemantha (ca. 1820/30); Eveline (ca. 1820/30); William M. K. (ca. 1826); Sarah (1830), wife of David PENMAN; Valentine (ca. 1832); James May (1834), husband of Anna Mary TATE James had a brother Edward (ca. 1765/74), who married Leah ERNEST in 1841. Another brother was Michael (ca. 1772/74), who had a son named Michael (ca. 1790/00). Their parents, Michael THORNTON and Jane BROWN, were married 30 Aug. 1758 in Philadelphia Swedes Church. Please note that this last is not my research, but I have seen James' will and it does list his eight children. Happy Hunting, John Penman Bloomsburg, PA

This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------0573FF49C9F69D8BE8503BD4 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit My Hobert family bible leads a straight line back to Eli Thornton, b. 1785 in Greenville township, son of James Thornton of Bloomsburg. Although there is evidence of James Thornton in Bloomsburg, Eli seems to have disappeared. I have nothing but a family bible to substantiate he even existed. His daughter moved west to Muscatine with the Err Thornton group. I believe Err and Eli were brothers, but have no proof. Does anyone have evidence, or colloborating evidence that Eli was a son of James from Bloomsburg? A probate? Land record? George says he had 8 kids. Were Eli, Err, and Bartlott 3 of them? I think Eli may have moved west to Lafayette County, Indiana and died there (where Err was the first white settler) but again, no proof. HELP! -- Dr. Diana J. 1. BEACHAM
    2. Donna M. Thomas
    3. Hi I am researching the surname BEACHAM and any derivative of that name. I have seen it many different ways..BEECHAM, BEACHIM, BEECHUM, BEACHMAN, etc. The original name was Beauchamp. There were several BEACHAM families in the Montour, Columbia, Northumberland, and Schuykill Counties in the mid 1800's. I am trying to piece together these families to find a common bond, if there is one, and to find descendants of any of these families who are doing genealogical research. My BEACHAM ancestor was James BEACHAM who lived in Point Township in Northumberland Co. Several of his children were born in Danville, PA in the early 1840's, so they may have lived in that area first. I recently found on a cemetery record that a brother (William) to my James Beacham b. ca. 1804 was born in Somersetshire ENG March 1805. William BEACHAM was married to Maria and lived in Danville, PA until his death. I am assuming that "my" James was also born in Somersetshire, ENG. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Donna

    3. I am following up on a long shot. I have heard that there was a William FRANKLIN early in the 1900s living in Town Hill, Huntington Twp, That his mother and grandmother had worked on the family tree and that the papers are now held by a daughter or granddaughter surname CREASY, living in or near Bloomsburg, Columbia Co. I want very much to locate this person as Franklin is my husband's maternal line. Kay Long of Salem twp, Luzerne co kaydan@epix.net

    2. Alice Kern
    3. What is the connection between Columbia County and Steuben Co. N. Y. ? As I have done research in Columbia County, I have found numerous connections to this county. Not just with the family (KARNS/KERN/KERNS) I am researching but other families as well. The time period would be at least as early as 1860. It almost appears as if the males of Columbia County went to Steuben Co. to find a wife. Any one care to comment? Alice Kern

    1. William Rhoades
    2. Hello! I am looking for information regarding my great grandfather, William Rhoades. He was born in Centralia, PA in 1885 and grew up in Shamokin, PA. I believe his father's name was Peter Rhoades. His family received indoor and outdoor help from Almshouses. They were known to the Shamokin and Coal Township Poor Board. He married Jennie Brobst in Bloomsburg, PA in 1907. Some of their children's names were Lawrence, Adeline, Mary, Robert, Effie, Ruth, John, and Jimmy. The family moved to Maryland for a short while in the 1920s. William moved to Wilkes-Barre in 1942. He worked as a chef at the Sayler's Cafe until he retired. He died in Wilkes-Barre. The service was at Christ Lutheran Church. The funeral home was Kniffen Funeral Home. I have talked to the funeral home and discovered that his information was probably lost in a flood. I believe he died in the 1950s. I would appreciate any help finding information on my family. I would also like to find out information on the poorhouses of the area. Thanks in advance, Christy

    1. Bloomsburg, PA area
    2. Rick, Joan & Dillon
    3. In regard to my earlier postings I have found the parents of Carrie Belle Jacoby to be Peter Jacoby and Mary Margaret Jacoby. Carrie was born at Millertown R.D. Columbia Co. PA on Jan 16, 1878. She worked for Ralph E. Miller in 1910 in Bloomsburg, PA and an A. Robbins, address: 229 Market, Bloomsburg, PA in 1955. MARY's maiden name seems to be Barnes, but it is very difficult to decipher. Mary later married a Cornelious or Conners C. Coleman and they had a son named Grover Cleveland Coleman b 10-28-1884 in Bloomsburg, PA. He later changed his name to George Charles. If anyone has info on these families and locations, etc., I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks so much! Joan Green

    1. 1800-1812 BODINE
    2. Joan Best
    3. There was a BODINE family that lived in Columbia Co. PA near Jerseytown. Most of the children married into other Jerseytown area families. I do not know who the parents are. The children were born between about 1780 to 1795. They may have been born in New Jersey and moved to Columbia Co., PA around 1800. The children's names are Abraham (married TAYLOR), Amy (married BEST), Ruth (married WATSON), Nicholas (these four took up land in 1811 in Ontario) Catherine and Rachel (both married GIRTON men and stayed in the area), Peter was probably one of the younger ones, married, VOUGHT, stayed in Columbia. I think there were several other female children who married KITCHEN and WELLIVER. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows anything about this BODINE family in the Jerseytown/Danville area. I am in Hawaii so it is difficult to look up cemetery records, census, etc. that is not on the internet, so all lookups will be greatly appreciated. I am trying to find the name of the parents. They would have been born abt. 1750-1760 and may be buried in one of the area cemeteries. There are lots of Bodine families in other areas of PA like Greene co. and York co. but these are not the right ones. Joan Best
