    3. Hiya Columbia County Listers, As promised a few months ago, I'm starting a surname roll-call which will last until next Sunday night, September 8th. Enter any particulars in the message area in short paragraph(s) afterwards. Remember ... to help other prospective "cousins" ... please be as specific as you can about dates and locations if you choose to include that information in a paragraph after your surname list. 1. POORHOUSE Information
    2. Poor House Lady
    3. We would like to invite you to visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We just posted a link to information about the COLUMBIA County Home and it's cemetery. We are really proud of a young member of your community -- Eagle Scout Ben James. At 16 years of age (last September) he rallied folks to clean up and publicly recognize the poorhouse cemetery. The story is told on the website of Tim (The Tired Warrier!) So we have linked to that website, borrowed some photos, and also featured Ben's story on our NEWS ALERTS page. Good going, Gang! (It is really nice to be able to report the good news that a community has decided to "do the right thing" ... even when a cemetery has originally been neglected. And Kudos to Tim ... who keeps on mowing the grass! DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on PENNSYLVANIA on the table of states, and COLUMBIA on the table of counties. If you have been to the website recently you may have to click REFRESH or RELOAD on the browser to see the new information. You will see an entry under HISTORICAL NOTES and under CEMETERIES. There is also a link to News Alerts on that homepage. There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

    1. Eckerd Mystery - New Info
    2. Ernie
    3. Thanks to all who have given me info on find my William ECKERD/ECKARD. I found out today, that he was listed as being a SURVIVING brother in his brother Harry's obit. Harry died in Feb 1944. William ECKERD/ECKARD and Bertha Laura ADELMAN must have been divorced around 1908. Laura listed herself as "widowed" in the 1910 census apparently to save face. Harry's obit says that he was born and reared in Almedia, and that William is from Millville. It also spells the last name as ECKARD. Now, how do I go about finding out their divorce date and information?

    3. I have recently come in the possession of my grand parents and great grand parents pictures and artifacts and in them was a picture of a horse drawn oil tanker from the Atlantic Refining Company. I am not sure of any relative who worked for them but I am assuming it was a Columbia County thing. Does any one know about this company and if anyone has an interest I will be glad to send a scanned copy. It is a pretty neat picture. Sue
