I am trying to find out if there was an academic institution named Williams in the general vicinity of Williamsport during the period 1821-1836. My 3g-grandfather, William Powell Farrand (1777-1839) was the founder of Farrandsville, Clinton County circa 1830. In 1802, he received an honorary A.M. degree from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). The Prince General Catalog entry for him is as follows: <<< Honorary Degrees 1802 .... William Powell Farrand, A.M. *1839 [Note: William Powell Farrand died 30 November 1839] A.B. Yale 1798. Professor Sacred Elocution Andover 1809-1811; President Williams 1821-36; A.B. also Columbia 1802; also Yale D.D. Union 1808. >>> Can anybody identify what school is the Williams of which William Powell Farrand was the president? Michael
Have you looked into whether it is Williams College in Williamstown, MA? It was founded in 1793. It would fit the others because it is equally prestigious. Hi Nancy, Williams College was my first thought, but when I contacted them they said, and later confirmed, that William Powell Farrand had never been a professor or officer of the college. Instead, they told me that one Edward Dorr Griffin had been president of Williams 1821-1836, Well, that seemed pretty strange, so I asked the Princeton folks what was going on. Turns out that their published records had a typesetter's error. Edward Doar Griffin also was awarded an honorary A.M. degree from Princeton in 1802, and he was listed next after William Powell Farrand. All of Griffin's academic achievements had been listed as Farrand's! William Powell Farrand's only degree was an A.B. from Yale in 1798. The other accomplishments attributed to him (Professor Sacred Elocution Andover 1809-1811; President Williams 1821-36; A.B. also Columbia 1802; also Yale D.D. Union 1808) were actually accomplishments of Edward Dorr Griffin. Thanks again for your interest. Michael BTW, I notice that you have an unusual spelling of your last name. I too have some Neumans from Philadelphia. Attached is a register report that tells you what I know or surmise about the family. I have never undertaken a rigorous research into my Neumans, but have it on a long list of things to do when I retire! Let me know if you see any fits.
