Hi All, I'm new to the list, trying to track down my 3great-grandfather, William Powell Farrand, the founder of Farrandsville, Clinton County, PA. At the time of his death, 30 November 1839 in Philadelphia, he had some kind of business connection with Williamsport. He may have had a residence there, since his executor charged for several trips from Philadelphia to Wiliamsport, and for moving expenses to transport goods from Williamsport to Philadelphia. I have a fair amount of information on him, as indicated below. What I do not know for sure, and what I am hoping that someone on the list may be able to help with, is as follows: (1) The name of William Powell Farrand's wife, and the date and place of their marriage. I have found no records whatever concerning this information. (2) Documentation of the dates and places of birth of William Powell Farrand's two children: a) Rebecca R. Farrand, said to have been born in Farrandsville, Pennsylvania about 1832 b) William P. Farrand, Jr., said to have been born in New Jersey about 1827 Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. He died on 30 November 1839 in Philadelphia, PA, at age 62. His estate was probated on 6 December 1839 in Philadelphia County, PA. He was graduated in 1798 from Yale University, New Haven, CT, with a B.A. degree. He was graduated in 1802 from Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, with an M.A. degree. He was was a bookseller (1811 Farrand & Nicholas law bookstore; 1813 Wm. P. Farrand; 1814-1817 Wm. P. Farrand bookseller; 1818-1822 Wm. P. Farrand commission merchant) between 1811 and 1822, located in the Shakespeare Buildings, 6th & Chestnut, Philadelphia, PA. He was an agent for the Pa. Land Co between 1835 and 1839 with offfices in the Franklin Institute, Philadelphia, PA. He made a will on 19 November 1839 in Philadelphia, PA. William P. Farrand was an extensive Bookseller, Philadelphia" according to "Short Biographical Sketches of Natives of Woodbury Who Emigrated." William P. Farrand, a "gentleman from Philadelphia of high scientific attainments, acting as agent for a company of heavy capitalists in Boston," founded Farrandsville, Colebrook Township, Clinton County, PA 17734 (41:10:30 N, 077:30:46 W), in the winter of 1831-32. History of Clinton County, PA, p. 602, acknowledging that the original source of this information was Sherman Day's "Historical Collections." "Fifty years ago [1842] the most important business place in Clinton County was Farrandsville. The town received its name from William P. Farrand, who came to the spot in the winter of 1830, as agent for a company of Boston capitalists. At that time there was no road to the place, and it could only be reached on horseback at times when the [Susquehanna] river was low. William P. Farrand broke a path into the mountains through three feet of snow in his efforts to discover and open the bituminous coal beds at this point, and often spent whole nights in the hills without shelter or food. The coal was to be shipped to the Eastern markets, and the manufacture of iron, lumbering, etc., was to be carried on at Farrandsville. A steamboat was constructed for the purpose of carrying material up and down the river. The boat was called the Farrand, and for a time she went puffing up and down the Susquehanna. William P. Farrand left, and other agents took his place from time to time." His daughter, Rebecca R. Farrand was born in Farrandsville, PA 1832. She married William Niles Freeland (1821-1879) circa 1848. She was listed as a resident in the census report in Philadelphia, PA, 1860. Rebecca's brother, William P. Farrand, Jr., resided 406 Franklin Street, Philadelphia, PA (1881-82 City Directories), witnessed the 1877 will of his brother-in-law, William Niles Freeland. >>>
