Carol, Here in Clinton County, most just refer to the Queens Mansion, as belonging to Queen Isabella. Yes there was indeed another Queen Isabella, she was a daughter of King Ferdinand VII (bn 1784) and Maria Christina(Maria Christina was the dau of Francis I the King of two Sicillies) She bacame the 4th wife of King Ferdinand VII in 1829. One daughter born of this marriage, Isabella II. In 1854 construction began on what is known as the Fallon Hotel, it was completed the next year. This Hotel, as well as the Queens Mansion(near Farrandsville) and 50,000 acres of land were purchased and constructed with monies from Maria Christina. Maria Christina convinced her husband King Ferdinand VII to disolve a ruling that upon his death his brother Don Carlos would gain the throne, which would give Isabella II the crown and title of Queen. The king did do this. In 1854 a revolution forced Maria Christina to flee from Spain, she returned in 1864. Another revolution followed Maria Christina and Queen Isabella II fled to France. It is the history of this area that the Mansion was built for Queen Isabella II to come here in exile. Which she never did. However, it is claimed that The Duke of Rainsaires did come to this area, stayed in the Fallon Hotel, and at some point he became the husband of Maria Christina. Mt. Rainsaires (in Clinton Co) is named after him. Queen Isabella II was a minor when she took the crown. Her mother was appointed guardian/regent by the will of King Ferdinand VII. King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella, were the backers of Columbus. Some 350 years before Isabella II. I hope this clears up the time period. Dear Dave, WOW!! This is all news to me!! I wonder why I haven't heard about this before. I have never heard of the "Queen's Mansion" and I have spent many weeks in the area in recent years, spent many hours in the library in Lock Haven and still never heard of this. I was born in Lock Haven, raised in Beech Creek/Blanchard and Cogan Station with many remaining ties in both Clinton and Centre Counties. I betcha when I ask my aunt in State College or my aunt in Williamsport, they will know all about this and wonder how come I didn't know!! I guess because nobody told me. We had a car break down in Farrandsville one time a few years ago and I had to stand around for a long time waiting for help. If I had only known!!! Just where from Farrandsville is this site? Is there more about it in the "History of Clinton and Centre counties" book? Where exactly is Mount Rainsaires?? Thanks for the clarification!! >Carol, > Here in Clinton County, most just refer to the Queens Mansion, as >belonging to Queen Isabella.
