    1. Abel/Able Newell
    2. Ken & Dianne
    3. Hello Lee & Ron & Clinton Co. researchers, We just received the death cert. for Able (spelled this way on cert.) and to our sad dismay, it did not have his parents listed. But on the upside, it listed his birthplace as Bradford, PA. Now where his mother's maiden name was suppose to have been, it had his wife's name & maiden name (Elizabeth Meyeres & her birth place as Hyneer PA.) We know for certain this Abel was married to Elizabeth Mayers or Meyers (Mayers on her brother's death cert., Meyeres on this death cert.) There is also another discrepuncy: On the census of 1900, Clinton Co., Leidy twp., PA. it shows Able to have been born in Feb. of 1824. But on this death cert. it says that he was born March 28, 1825. place of death: Leidy, Clinton Co., PA. died Nov. 26, 1909 of Epthecal Cancer, buried at Tamarack, Clinton Co., PA. on Nov. 28, 1909. Undertaker: F. ___?_. Mears, Cross Forks, PA. Registrar A. G. Calhoun Nov. 27 1909. What I need to know from either of you, Lee & Ron, is this: Was there only one family of Newell in Bradford Co., PA. around 1824-30???? Thank you for posting your work on rootsweb! Ken & Dianne Croak

    3. Colette, I apologize. I over-reacted; however, I was not offended in the least. Old turtles like me have very hard shells. Several times prior to this, I spent hours getting information for people, only to discover they had asked someone else to get it also. I am currently working on 17 research projects for people and I want to help all of them, but I don't want my work to be duplicated when I could have been helping others. Fear not, I will get you the information you need; not as an act of random kindness, but the love to helping people with their genealogical quests. Incidentally, the "Gloria" you refer to is my sister. Justin Houser is a great guy, but he lives in Centre county and would have to make a special trip to help you. Peace. 3. Shotgun - Absolutely not. I received the list of Bartleys from a lady named Gloria who was kind enough to take the time from her own projects to check the Ross Library. As Gloria was obviously a busy lady, I thanked her and asked for no further assistance. I contacted several e-mail addresses at the local newspaper asking if I could obtain copies of past articles (The obits from the Ross Library list). I never heard from anybody. I contacted the Ross library and asked if I could obtain copies from them. I never heard from them either. I contacted one J.K. Houser about one (1) obit and didn't hear from him. I contacted you about the other articles and, after not hearing from J.K. Houser about the last one, asked you to do that one also. The only reason I would ask ANYBODY to look up five articles is that I understand they are all available in the same place - the library. I would not presume to ask a bunch of people to run around for the same purpose. I also would not presume to ask one person to run all over twelve counties for any purpose. I am sorry to have offended you. So many people volunteer under "Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness" and never reply. I have, in the past, waited weeks before trying other avenues. Apparently this was not the case this time. I have subscribed to the Clinton County and the Centre County Rootsweb mailing lists and posted the Bartleys under the "Does anybody know them" theory. I understand some of these lists do have volunteers but, to date, I have not contacted them for any reason. Again, I am very sorry to have offended you and would not ask anyone to do something which you have already indicated you would do. 3. Hazzards of a census taker............ Pack of dogs attack, kill Census worker Associated Press NASHVILLE, Ind. --A pack of dogs attacked and killed a 71-year-old Census Bureau worker who walked past warning signs in an attempt to count the occupants of an isolated, rural home. An autopsy showed that Dorothy Stewart died from injuries suffered during the attack, Brown County prosecutor Jim Oliver said Monday. When sheriff's deputies arrived at the home Saturday, they found Stewart's body about 3 feet from the front door of the one-story log cabin, surrounded by dogs. The dogs -- deputies counted more than 20 -- were chewing on Stewart's arms and legs, Brown County Sheriff Dan Huesman said. The driveway posted "Beware of Dog" and "No Trespassing" signs. "Some were on chains, some were loose and some were in the house," Huesman said. "We were able to capture at least 12 dogs. We captured as many as we could." One dog was shot because it attacked an officer, Huesman said. Investigators were not sure how many of the dogs belonged to the homeowner, Wayne Newton, and how many were strays. "They have denied that the dogs were theirs," Oliver said. "We have reason to disbelieve that. Mostly because the complaints indicate there were always many more dogs there than the few that they claim to have." Oliver said the investigation into Stewart's death will continue, and he hasn't ruled out criminal charges. Officials at the Census Bureau's national office said they could not recall any incidents similar to this.

    1. Grove Family
    2. Someone was looking at one time for the surname Grove. I found this while reading through "The History of the Counties of Dauphin and Lebanon in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania", by William Henry Egle, 1883. Page 241, History of Lebanon County, Genealogical History: The Grove Family. I. Peter Grove, the ancestor of the family in Lebanon County, was a native of Switzerland, where he was born in 1724. He was an infant when he was brought to America, and until about the year 1750 resided near Lancaster. That year he located in Bethel township, now Lebanon County, where he lived until his death, in 1803. The dwelling he erected over a century ago is yet standing, and in the ownership of his grandchildren. His Children were: i. Jacob. ii. Peter. 2. iii. John. iv. Anna Barbara. v. Maria. vi. Veronica. II. John Grove (Peter), b. in 1768, in Bethel township, Lancaster, now Lebanon Co., Pa; d. in 1835, in Bethel township; m. Anna Elizabeth Wenner, b. 1785, in Berks County, Pa.; d. 1847, in Bethel twp., Lebanon Co., Pa. They had issue: i. John Peter. ii. John. iii. Jacob Wenner, b. 1816; m. 2. Barb, The info on Seth McCormick is as follows; 10. Seth McCormick. An Irishman, occupied a cabin on South Creek, a branch of White Deer Hole creek, about a mile west of Swan's cabin. Seth died here on the 17th of January, 1835, in the 79th year of his age. His remains lie buried in the old Presbyterian, (now Lutheran) graveyard, at the "stone church," on the south west side of Penny Hill. He left a wife and nine children, and his descendents are still living here, and occupy a part of their great ancestors estate. 11. Thomas McCormick. An Irishman and brother of Seth's; occupied a cabin on South creek about half a mile from Seth's. He seems to have acted as Justice of the Peace for some years. He died on the 6th of October, 1826 aged 72 years, and his remains also lie buried in the old graveyard near the above "stone church." These bits were taken from the Article "White Deer Hole Valley", by J. F. Wolfinger that was in the Daily Lycoming Gazette & West Branch Bulliten on Sept 9, 1870 page 4. The article speaks of the fourteen original families that settled in the valley in 1787.

    3. That date is very early for a "Lock Haven" Newspaper. The Ross Library, in L.H., has a card index file of Obits, births, etc., from the local newspapers. But I really think 1829 is too early for those records. Clinton COunty was formed in 1839, and this is 10 years prior to that, so I would look into Lycoming County for something. I am not sure how far back deaths were registered on the county level in Lyco. Co. You could try the Lyco. Co Courthouse, master death books.(if they have them) I think State law mandated deaths be recorded about 1894. 3. Barbara, the Ross Library in LH keeps a card file of BMDs going back that far. You might try the Brown Library in Williamsport since LH was part of Lycoming County that date.
