Dave, never tried your trick but I do know that if you find a piece of yellow cellophane (from a fruit basket, Easter basket??) save it to cover an illegible paper to enhance the print. Thank you, Dave. In the light of a new day, Berks is a possibility if I consider misspelling and horrible penmanship. I'll remember the yellow paper trick! Can only think of maybe BERKS County, or maybe it was to be BLANCHARD, Centre County. Try covering the certificate with yellow paper, and holding it to the light, to see the word. This idea was suggested to me awhile ago, and seems to make the words clearer. A 1935 death certificate refers to a "Beliker(sp.?)" Co., PA as the birthplace of Ely Bittner. Has anyone heard of this place? Is it possibly a local township? The family seems to be pretty well centered in Clinton County. Thanks for any information, Colette

Westport is in Noyes Township. First settlement in Westport or "Kettle Creek" area was in 1785 when it was part of Pine Creek Township, Northumberland County. Northumberland County divided into parts.... Westport or "Kettle Creek" part of Chapman Township of Lycoming County.. Lycoming County broken apart... Clinton County established in 1839. Post Office of Westport established in 1850. Named as such due to "Kettle Creek" being taken by a PO at the head of the creek. Noyes Township was cut from Chapman Township in 1875. Most of this information was gleaned from "Historical View of Clinton County" by Maynard Hope this helps, Stephen Miller -----Original Message----- From: Carol Updegraff [mailto:cupdegraff@cvinternet.net] Sent: Wednesday, September 20, 2000 12:09 AM To: PACLINTO-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: Westport >Does someone know what township Westport is in? I saw where someone said they had directories at the Ross Library. I live in Houston, TX and was wondering if anyone could spot check a few directories for me when they have time. I have a pair of ancestors: Augustus & Sarah MERRILL who were both alive in the 1920 census at the age of 71. If directories exist for the years after that, I'd like to narrow down to a couple of years when they died so I can send off for death records. Please email me if anyone is willing and able to do this! :-) rsleeds@worldnet.att.net Thanks! Dana Merrill, McClintock, Waldron, Smith
David Summerson was killed early 1830 by falling tree, not 1840. Sorry, should have proof read my typing before hitting the send button. D.C.
