    3. Thanks for the obituaries! I am almost certain that J.D.L. (John David Lusk) Smith was the son of John Smith, who was a son of Gideon and Elizabeth Smith. His farmhouse is pictured in Maynard's history of Clinton Co. Rev. Grier of the Pine Creek Presby. church married John Smith and Betsy Lusk Nov. 15, 1821. 2. DIED BOSSERT - On the 15th inst. of consumption, Miss Lillie E. Bossert, eldest daughter of Col. Henry M. Bossert, of Bald Eagle Township, aged 23 years. Her life it is true was short, but it was happy for such was her disposition that all who knew her, loved her, and in passing from earth to heaven, it was only leaving one band of loved ones to join another in glory, who lovingly met her to escort her to the presence of her Savior; for Lillie testified ere she left this world, that truly she had found Christ, and was going to that heavenly country where all is peace and joy eternal For heavenly love prepared her soul, And called her to the skies, Where years of long salvation roll And glory never dies. 3. I am looking for William and Beulah TEMPLETON who I believe were the parents of my gg grandmother Beulah Templeton Smith (1803-1882). Here is what I know. Linn mentions William and Beulah Templeton as the parents of Anna (1782-1870), who married William Fearon (p. 582, Clinton County). Anna is buried in the Hays-Fearon Cemetery, Beech Creek. My gg grandmother Beulah Templeton was married to Thomas Armstrong Smith in 1823 by Rev. Grier. Thomas Armstrong Smith was a son of Gideon Smith, a revolutionary war veteran, who is buried with his wife Elizabeth in the Hays-Fearon cemetery. The Smiths were communicants at the Pine Creek church and lived in White Deer (now Kelly Twp), Union County from about 1795-1814 before moving to Beech Creek. Thomas and Beulah Smith moved from Clinton County to Allamakee County Iowa in the 1850s. In the 1870 census Beulah's father is listed as foreign born, her mother is listed as native born. Who was William Templeton? Or was William Templeton the name of Beulah's father? A William Templeton is listed in the 1810 census for Bald Eagle township. In Linn's History of Centre County, William Templeton is listed as an inhabitant of Lower Bald Eagle Township in 1801 (p.39). Where did he go? And where did he come from? (I have found no evidence that Samuel Templeton of Union County (who was born in Ireland) had a daughter named Beulah). Any help or clues would be most appreciated. Thank you, Nancy Neuman, Lewisburg, Union County, PA.

    3. Hi Nancy, Williams College was my first thought, but when I contacted them they said, and later confirmed, that William Powell Farrand had never been a professor or officer of the college. Instead, they told me that one Edward Dorr Griffin had been president of Williams 1821-1836, Well, that seemed pretty strange, so I asked the Princeton folks what was going on. Turns out that their published records had a typesetter's error. Edward Doar Griffin also was awarded an honorary A.M. degree from Princeton in 1802, and he was listed next after William Powell Farrand. All of Griffin's academic achievements had been listed as Farrand's! William Powell Farrand's only degree was an A.B. from Yale in 1798. The other accomplishments attributed to him (Professor Sacred Elocution Andover 1809-1811; President Williams 1821-36; A.B. also Columbia 1802; also Yale D.D. Union 1808) were actually accomplishments of Edward Dorr Griffin. Thanks again for your interest. Michael BTW, I notice that you have an unusual spelling of your last name. I too have some Neumans from Philadelphia. Attached is a register report that tells you what I know or surmise about the family. I have never undertaken a rigorous research into my Neumans, but have it on a long list of things to do when I retire! Let me know if you see any fits. 3. Hi All, I'm new to the list, trying to track down my 3great-grandfather, William Powell Farrand, the founder of Farrandsville, Clinton County, PA. At the time of his death, 30 November 1839 in Philadelphia, he had some kind of business connection with Williamsport. He may have had a residence there, since his executor charged for several trips from Philadelphia to Wiliamsport, and for moving expenses to transport goods from Williamsport to Philadelphia. I have a fair amount of information on him, as indicated below. What I do not know for sure, and what I am hoping that someone on the list may be able to help with, is as follows: (1) The name of William Powell Farrand's wife, and the date and place of their marriage. I have found no records whatever concerning this information. (2) Documentation of the dates and places of birth of William Powell Farrand's two children: a) Rebecca R. Farrand, said to have been born in Farrandsville, Pennsylvania about 1832 b) William P. Farrand, Jr., said to have been born in New Jersey about 1827 Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. He was graduated in 1798 from Yale University, New Haven, CT, with a B.A. degree. He was graduated in 1802 from Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, with an M.A. degree. He was was a bookseller (1811 Farrand & Nicholas law bookstore; 1813 Wm. P. Farrand; 1814-1817 Wm. P. Farrand bookseller; 1818-1822 Wm. P. Land Co between 1835 and 1839 with offfices in the Franklin Institute, Philadelphia, PA. He made a will on 19 November 1839 in Philadelphia, PA. William P. Farrand was an extensive Bookseller, Philadelphia" according to "Short Biographical Sketches of Natives of Woodbury Who Emigrated." William P. Farrand, a "gentleman from Philadelphia of high scientific attainments, acting as agent for a company of heavy capitalists in Boston," founded Farrandsville, Colebrook Township, Clinton County, PA 17734 (41:10:30 N, 077:30:46 W), in the winter of 1831-32. History of Clinton County, PA, p. 602, acknowledging that the original source of this information was Sherman Day's "Historical Collections." "Fifty years ago [1842] the most important business place in Clinton County was Farrandsville. The town received its name from William P. Farrand, who came to the spot in the winter of 1830, as agent for a company of Boston capitalists. At that time there was no road to the place, and it could only be reached on horseback at times when the [Susquehanna] river was low. William P. Farrand broke a path into the mountains through three feet of snow in his efforts to discover and open the bituminous coal beds at this point, and often spent whole nights in the hills without shelter or food. The coal was to be shipped to the Eastern markets, and the manufacture of iron, lumbering, etc., was to be carried on at Farrandsville. A steamboat was constructed for the purpose of carrying material up and down the river. The boat was called the Farrand, and for a time she went puffing up and down the Susquehanna. William P. Farrand left, and other agents took his place from time to time." His daughter, Rebecca R. Farrand was born in Farrandsville, PA 1832. She married William Niles Freeland (1821-1879) circa 1848. She was listed as a resident in the census report in Philadelphia, PA, 1860. Rebecca's brother, William P. Farrand, Jr., resided 406 Franklin Street, Philadelphia, PA (1881-82 City Directories), witnessed the 1877 will of his brother-in-law, William Niles Freeland. >>>

    3. I just wanted to share with everyone the great surprise Ken & I got this evening, when we opened our mail. We finally got the pension papers for Joseph Repetto from the Fed. Archives (4mo. wait) but it was worth it! From the papers, we learned that he was not a Pvt. as we thought, but a Corp., but the greatest thing was that his widow applied for widow's pension after his death, and had supplied their marriage document from WI. to the govt., which had Joseph's parents names on it! Unfortunately it did not have his mother's maiden name, only her given name. His dad was Jacob Repetto, and mother was Mary. It also gave us Joseph's 2nd wife's maiden name, and his 3rd wife's maiden name, her parent's names, and her deceased first husband's name and death date. Joseph's 3rd wife's name on the census was just Hepsie, and I can sure see why she was called Hepsie, as I cannot even pronounce her name. It was HEPHZIBAH. Ken, jokingly said "I wonder how many months it took her parents to dream up a name like that. " This was certainly $10 well spent. Dianne & Ken Croak
