    1. Marriage License Requirements in Pennsylvania
    2. I found this interesting editorial from the Centre County newspaper, "The Centre Democrat", and thought you might enjoy reading it. Thursday, June 25, 1885. LICENSED MATRIMONY "One of the vexed questions of Pennsylvania social economy has been the laxity of her marriage and divorce laws. A man and woman could marry themselves and they were about as easily divorced. Marriages were hasty and repentance not as leisurely as one might suppose...This laxity in our marriage and divorce laws was having a relaxing effect on the moral of the people...The new marriage law is one step in the direction of reform in the social economic question of marriage and divorce." "No person can get married without a license from the Clerk of the Orphans' Court; no person can obtain a license unless legally qualified. Minors cannot obtain a license without the written consent of parents or guardians. No person legally qualified to perform the marriage ceremony of his church or society can do so unless the license is first produced, under penalty of one hundred dollars. There can be no sham or mock marriages, elopements will not be so easy and bigamy without perjury will be impossible. Young and innocent girls will be protected from the machination of designing villians, who, under the guise of a secret marriage, accomplised their ruin. On the whole we regard the bill as one of the best measures passed by the last Legislature and one that will be of lasting benefit to the Commonwealth. If the Governor signs it, it will go into effect October 1, 1885." Don't you just love the "designing villains" part! Can you imagine this article in today's newspapers? It does, however, explain why marriage information is hard to research before 1885. Diana Mason

    3. Hello, If anyone has the book "North Central Pennsylvania," by T. Kenneth Wood (1936), would they be kind enough to do a look-up regarding the surnames HOLLINGSWORTH and SCHAFFER (Shaffer). Does anyone have the book "History of Jefferson" by Kate M. Scott, 1888 (reprint 1973)? I was told that there is something in regards to VAN LEW in the book. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I have used funeral home records, and find them excellant sources of info, naming next of kin(sometimes) down to the pall bearers. Sometimes calling hours, Elks or Masonic services etc, are sometimes on them. 2. Thanks so much for that information--Bet you could hear me shout"yes".! At least that gives me some start. In looking over that list I notice there is no one named Will or William. My father talked about "Uncle Will" who took care of the clock in the tower in Lock Haven..I vaguely remember of Uncle Will having a heart attack while he was attending the clock and apparently fell to his death.I was only young so am not too sure of the details. Any mention of him? Thanks again Ruth Eckler

    1. Census Indexes 1800-1840
    2. Barb Seyler
    3. Hi Genie-Friends! In case some of you may not know, I am a volunteer for the 1800-1840 Federal census indexes. Since Clinton did not become a county until 1839, the census index lookup also covers neighboring Centre Co. for 1800-1840 as well. The census index for these years only show the head of household by name. It does not indicate place of birth nor other family members by name. On the census record, everyone else in the household is listed as a "number" under the appropriate age column. My search is done at the National Archives. Please send only 1 name at a time and indicate in the subject line "Clinton Co. Census." Please do not ask for "all the Smith's", etc. as I just cannot do this. Be patient as there are approximately 20-30 volunteer lookups a week and sometimes I do get behind. I will get to each of you as soon as possible. :) Please feel free to contact me anytime you need some advice about census research - will do my best to help you!
