>From Caldwell's 1878 atlas, page 78: "Ramey: from Gulich Township March 29, 1893 (Q.S. Docket #8, page 70.) The name was chosen because of the D. K. Ramey Company having a large lumber mill at this point, which mill was the main support of the town. Its first post office was established in 1877." Please note this raises a big question, How does an atlas published in 1878 know that the boro of Ramey comes from the township of Gulich/Geulich in 1893? Of course, there was the post office by that name at that time (1878). There also is a map of Geulich Township on page 86 that shows Ramey. On page 218: Part of the advertising directory. "Ramey Post Office Ramey D. K., Son and Co., Lumbering. West Alfred, Sawyer. Miller John, Engineer. Laing Richard, proprietor Boarding House, and Woods Boss. McCauley Charles, Book-keeper." >From Aldrich's 1887 History of Clearfield County, page 536: "Ramey.--The northern town of the township is that of Ramey, which is probably directly due to the effect of the branch railroad running along that border of the township. This is the only town or village in the township which enjoys the advantages of a railroad. In 1877 the post-office was made at this place, and here is a handsome Methodist Church. A large mill and heavy lumber business is here controlled by D. K. Ramey and Company, employing about one hundred men. The business men are Frederick Alvon, blacksmith and James Croyle, blacksmith, S. J. Fox and others; while recently a handsome school-house has been built." Ramey was established in 1878 according to this site: http://www.phmc.state.pa.us/bah/DAM/counties/pdfs/Clearfield.pdf . Although this indicates it was established as a borough on that date, on the 1880 census pages it's listed as "Village of Ramey in Gulich Township." Just guessing here, but perhaps it didn't go from a village to a borough until 1893. See also this Wikipedia site which addresses "Settlements (including cities, towns and villages) established (ie first settled or otherwise came into existence) in the year 1878": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Settlements_established_in_1878 P.
