    3. Hello Michele and List Members. Thank you for the wonderful response regarding what is a "jimmy mine". Today was a very successful day. The answer to the mystery has been solved. Whew! it was a hum-dinger wasn't it? I think you will all agree. See for your self: In 1885 J. C. Scott & Sons and James Mines withdrew from the Houtzdale Coal Co. and formed a partnership among themselves under the name of James Mines & Co.", with James Mines as superintendent. It was a small settlement close to the mines, and this was a way of telling people where you were, like an address, instead of just Houtzdale, it was reffered to as JIMMY MINES ( not a place but the owners name James Mines a.k.a. Jimmy Mines. Later this mine was sold to the Berwind-White Coal Mining Company, and named by them as "Eureka N. 10." We need to thank Barbara- she dug this up On page 229 of the History of Clearfield Co. Pennsylvania With Illustrations 1887 - in the middle of the page a referance to the Houtzdale Coal Company founded in 1882, it also states that "James Mines was the superintendent, who owned an interest in the mine." This mine was sold to the Berwind-White Coal Mining Company, July, 1886 and named by them "Eureka N. 10." Thank you all for suggestions, leads, ideas and finally the answer.

    2. Sue, Thanks for giving me the opportunity to ask my Grandpa something else about the Houtzdale area. He is 97 and it always amazes me how much he recollects about his younger days. The following is the response from my Aunt who I asked to ask him if he knew about Jimmy Mines: "There was a Jimmy Mines who lived (born, also?) on a farm on the road between Ramey and Ginter. He had 2 sons- Jimmy and George. The elder Jimmy owned mines in the area but Dad told me about 1 in particular. It was located at the end of Main St going out of town toward Osceola Mills. Dad said there wasn't much if any good coal taken out of it. George owned a mine in the Whiteside area which is out beyond where Skagenberg's lived (which was Franklin). (Dad worked there for a short while but the mine was flooded out and it took a year to get it back up and running. Dad got other work during this time.) He told me he walked out to Ramey to get some or all of the money owed to him- $25. This was at a time previous to the flood, and when no one was able to buy the coal because no one had any $. George told him he couldn't pay him until someone bought the coal. Mother and Dad had nothing at that point which is why he walked so far. At that time, their folks on both sides helped them out with groceries etc. I don't understand how either of those folks where able to help but that is the story. He was eventually paid. Younger Jimmy apparently owned coal mines in WVA."
