Good morning, everyone, This message is being posted with the prior approval of your listowner, Nate Zipfel. The CD is compiled and is in the process of being published. The Centre County Genealogical Society is now taking orders for the CD-ROM, which will be shipped when it comes back from the publisher. After a long period of gathering data, the Centre County Genealogical Society is proud to announce the release of a CD-ROM indexing all identified marriages in the county's history. The CD, entitled "Centre County, PA Marriage Index, 1764-2005," contains index references to over 71,000 marriages. The names of bride and groom, the date of marriage, a book and page reference are given for each entry. Marriages since Oct. 1, 1885, have been indexed from the marriage license dockets on file at the library, and indexing is current through June 2005. Prior to October, 1885, marriages were gleaned from a variety of sources, including the three volumes compiled by the Centre County Library, recently discovered church records and family Bibles, the Spangler notebooks, newspaper accounts, and other references. Pre-1885 marriages include any marriage located which occurred in Centre County or referenced known Centre County people. Thus, the earliest listed marriage is from the Thomas Askey family record, dated 1764, five years before the settlement of Centre County. There were approximately 10,000 marriages found for the 1764-1885 time frame. The index appears in PDF format, in alphabetical order, with an accompanying Microsoft Access file so that the researcher can sort the data in any fashion he or she desires. An introduction, over 20 pages in length, reviews marriage license law, procedure, and history for the area, gives a list of the clerks who recorded the licenses, and many other interesting details. The work was edited by Justin K. Houser with the assistance of over 30 volunteers, who are given credit in the introduction. Copies of the CD are available from the Society through its website http://www.rootsweb.com/~paccgs/books.htm Although I edited this work, I have no interest in its publication other than to see the Society prosper and information disseminated to researchers.
