My Grandfather was a coal miner for some time in Houtzdale and he says that there was a "Sterling" mine about a mile outside of Houtzdale, somewhere in the valley near the Sterling Grade School. The Sterling mine that he remembers was already shutdown when he started mining in the late 1920's. What is your Grandfather's name? I didn't see any other information on this coal mine but it does say that Most Coal Company employee records have been lost or destroyed after the mines were closed.
