Like others on the list, I'm disappointed that The Progress does not have complete obituaries on their web site. I did recently learn of one source for obituaries. The Beardsley Funeral Home provides complete obituaries for those people with whom they are working. Currently I believe there are about nine people listed. If other Clearfield County Funeral Homes provide such a wonderful service perhaps someone can share such information. _http://obit.beardsleyfuneralhome.com/obit_list.cgi_ (http://obit.beardsleyfuneralhome.com/obit_list.cgi) Jim Nolan Boise, ID _JJenolan@aol.com_ (mailto:JJenolan@aol.com)

I received this message from another message board. Thought I'd pass it on. The LDS Family History Library has begun digitizing and making available on the Internet all of the Family History books in their collection. About 5000 books have been digitized and are available, and they have announced that they are adding about 100 titles a week to the on-line Family History collection. http://www.lib.byu.edu/fhc/ If you don't find what you want there, you may find Family Histories online helpful. I have my Gr Grandparents George age 32 born Canada & Susann Derouin age 21 born PA, grandfather Joseph L Derouin age 2 brother George W Derouin age 4/12 living in 1880 Woodward Twp. Clearfield Co. Joseph L my paternal Grandfather. Along with George Sr's. Brother Joseph & Wife Elen < no children listed. At 2 and 4 years of age, where whould the children have gone ? After 1880 George Susann, Joseph & Elen disappear. Family tale is that George & Susann died a sudden death when the children Joseph L & George W were 2 & 4 ??? What could that have been , and epidemic, a building fire, this would have been about 1882-1883 going by the tale. Where would I go to find out, newspapers, death records, articles . I am at a total loss here, even to find them in 1880 on Ancestry was a challenge the names were spelled Derrouin, Derwin, Drouin ! Not sure that either of the boys were born in Clearfield. Its said that my grandpa Joe was born in Tipton Pa. He passed away at a very young age in 1924, in Pittsburgh Pa. Any ideas, hints, or help would be greatly appreciated Thank you Carol Derouin Michigan

My Grandfather was a coal miner for some time in Houtzdale and he says that there was a "Sterling" mine about a mile outside of Houtzdale, somewhere in the valley near the Sterling Grade School. The Sterling mine that he remembers was already shutdown when he started mining in the late 1920's. What is your Grandfather's name? It also asks where the the place of employment is located and my grandfather answered Sterling No. 2. My grandfather lived in the Houtzdale area which I know Sterling is it's neighbor. Does anyone know of a Coal Mining company that was in this area of Sterling in the early 1900's? I'm interested in the name of the company and maybe learning a little more about it and if possible any records on my grandfathers employment would be nice. :) Thanks!

Hello, I was at an antique store today and happened upon 2 old family photos that were actually identified! I couldn't leave them there, so I bought them and am now hoping to find their rightful homes. Both are old postcard-type photos. Here is the info: One, postmarked Nov. 1911, shows three sisters and a friend. The sisters are identified as children of John R. Miller. Two are named--Zella Miller and Mary Miller or, it could be Mary Miller Hambley or Mary Miller and Hambley Miller--hard to tell the way it is written, if there are 2 or 3 girls identified. The youngest girl has "mother" written over her dress in the picture--obviously added later. This card was mailed by John R. Miller of Raney, Clearfield Co., PA, to his brother, Merl Miller, Glasgow, Cambria Co., PA, and includes a note asking Merl (sic) to check out cow prices. The second card was not mailed, but is of two infants who are identified as Billy and Bobby Miller, twin children of Merle (sic) Miller, brother of John R. Miller. John R. Miller is identified as the photographer on both of these. Please email me if you are related to these people. I paid $2 for both of these, so I would be happy to part with them for that +postage. I don't understand how old family photos end up in antique stores, but at least these were identified! Mona

I just ask that they be put on the Clearfield list and not on some web site that you can't search them unless you to pay to join. There are far to many such web sites. Those of us that are on fixed income can't possibly pay the fees to do research. This is one hobby that shut in's can do but it is getting far too expensive. Public records should be kept public and available to all. Leah
Hello List, Thanks to Luann for submitting that URL concerning the 1839 Statutes at Large. The one item that really stands out is this Resolution to allow a name change. Hello all, Jim is right, the best way to make these files digitally accessible would be as Jim said to use Adobe Acrobat. Using this each page would be scanned and an exact copy would be the result. These could then be uploaded to a webserver or placed on a cd-rom. In either case the originals would then be safe from the fate that befalls repeated handling of these precious old documents. Any of the type-written pages in this collection could then have OCR (Optical Character Recognition) applied to them to make them searchable. Handwritten documents would not be good candidates for OCR since there is no uniformity to the penmanship. OCR for handwriting does exist but produces results that are so bad that while correcting all of the errors, you might as well have typed it to start with. While I have seen the book sitting on the shelf on my visits to the museum, I have never actually looked at them, so I have no clue if they are typed or handwritten. One of the drawbacks of squeezing research into a busy vacation schedule of visiting relatives and relaxing.
