Michelle, 1860 Census: I did not find Agnes listed with any of the Gelnett families in Clearfield County. 1870 Census: Brady Township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania Series: M593 Roll: 1327 Page: 62B and 63A [Agnes Gillinet age 12 is listed in the Gabrial Heverling (Gabriel Heberling) and Hannah (his wife?) household as what appears to read step daughter. This strange in that I have Hannah's maiden name as Rissinger. Hannah being the daughter of Peter and Magdalena (Dietz) Rissinger. I do have Magdalene (a sister of Hannah's) married to Edward Gelnett. Isn't this Agnes Gelnett the daughter of the Jacob Gelnett that was killed in the Civil War? This article was in the CENTRE DAILY TIMES (State College, PA) paper this morning: STATES STEADILY CLOSING DOWN ACCESS TO PUBLIC INFORMATION by Robert Tanner (AP) Some things your government doesn't have to tell you about: *The safety plan at your child's school, if you live in Iowa, *Medication errors at your grandparent's nursing home in North Carolina, *Disciplinary actions against Indiana state employees. States have steadily limited the public's access to government information since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, a new Associated Press analysis of laws in all 50 states has found. Legislatures have passed more than 1,000 laws changing access to information... Federal agencies responded by shutting down Web sites, pulling telephone directories and rethinking everything from dam blueprints to historical records. In statehouse battles, the issue has pitted advocates of government openness - including journalists and civil liberties groups - against lawmakers and others who worry that public information could be misused...security concerns typically won out. States passed 616 laws that restricted access.... Just this month, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty announced a new governmentwide effort to target identity theft, barring access to driver's licenses, phone records and Social Security numbers. No longer, the governor said, should there be a presumption that government information is public. Open government advocates disagree. The way we see it, if Pawlenty is successful, information that used to be public in Minnesota will soon be unnecessarily locked away. Dear List, When searching the list archives for 2002, there was a "kind soul" who was doing look-ups from a reference book by Robert J. Allison: "Marriage Records of Clearfield County, Pa., Prior to October 1, 1885". Does Jim Reichman, the "kind soul", still subscribe to this list, or is there another researcher out there who has this reference work who could do the following lookup? We found an entry in one of those 2002 posts for Amanda Breth/B. (Benjamin) F. Jordan on 23 Feb 1881. Would someone be so kind as to give us all Jordan entries, and if not all of them, at least any others for Benjamin F. Jordan (mentioned above) in the time frame 1875-1885? The book of course ends in Oct 1885. We believe Benjamin may have remarried in 1890 after the death of Amanda. The 1890 Clearfield Co. marriage license application names the new woman as "Nora Livingston, divorced 1885". Her parents are named as John and Anna, surnames not stated. Do the book show any records for Nora Unk-surname and Mr. Livingston, or, Nora Livingston and Unk. Unknown? Thank you, Louise in Allegheny County

HI List, Several weeks ago there was discussion about the fire that consumed Brisbin in 1894. I do apologize for assuming that the cemetery markers did not burn. I found an article today that my sister gave me several years ago about the cemetery and found it very interesting . This article was published in the Clearfield Progress on April 17, 2002. I will summarize it here: The cemetery has approximately 11,000 grave sites with over 8,000 burials. Mr. Richard Marien's father was the original caretaker of the cemetery. The original maps of the cemetery were saved from the fire because one of the members had the book out of the area that day. The ledger dates back to 1892. Many of the wooden crosses were destroyed by the fire making it difficult to pinpoint gravesites. That sums up the part about the fire. If anyone wants the entire article I can scan it for you.

List: In 1917, Steve Rekoski registered with the officials for the WW I Draft at Falls Creek, PA. His draft card indicates that he was a laborer at the Elk Tanning Co. in Falls Creek and that he immigrated from Makow, Russia. He was 22 years of age and single, as well as an Alien. This Steve may the the Stephan Rekoszy who witnessed the marriage of Damaszy Rekoszy two years earlier at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Philly. He may also be the Antonio Rekus who arrived at the Port of Philadelphia on December 17, 1912, headed for his brother Damszy's in Philly. We are looking for any corroborating info based on Clearfield County to the above facts. Are City Directories available for the period 1912-1920? Do they reflect the presence of Steve in any of these years? Are the records for the local Catholic Church available, and if so, is there a record of Steve worshiping there? Any other info? TIA! Bob, in VA
Donna Ireland has graciously granted permission to transcribe "The Clearfield Cookbook" which was compiled and published by the Junior Auxiliary of the Clearfield Hospital. All of the recipes were donated by people in the community, and the name of the donor appears on every recipe. Unfortunately, there is no date on it, but I can tell it is quite old. Primarily because no ingredient amounts are given for the main ingredients, only for things like flour, salt, milk, etc. Donna prepared a name index to the recipes so you can see if your grandmother's (or great-grandmother) favorite recipe is included. Some of the recipes have great sounding names, e.g., Delicate Cake, Perfection Salad, Orange Puffs, and Date Kisses; while others have intriguing names: Suet Pudding, Scotch Cake, Mandolins, Hickory Nut Jumbles, etc. If you would like to help transcribe this treasure, please send me an email with you name and snail mail address.
