I just sent this to the Bloom message board and thought that some of the PA folk aren't on that message board but would be just as interested or informed for my query to apply. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Peggy DeHoog <wletto@gmail.com> Date: Feb 2, 2007 12:11 PM Subject: Blum Johan Peter (Peter Bloom) of Germany & Alexandria, Hunterdon, New Jersey w/descendents in Cleafield, PA To: BLOOM-L@rootsweb.com We are all working on the descendants of this man but I'd like to see if we can come together and sort out his ancestry. Here's what I have: Parents: Johan Peter Blum, Sr. (1700 Germany-1793-New Jersey) and Eleanora Pfeiff. Apparently, Eleanora died in Germany. The only sibling I have for Junior is Herbert with no dates. Johan Sr., then married Patience Ayers (1717-1794) and they had Rachel, Phebe, Mary, Patience, and Mercy Blum I have no dates for any of these girls and no spouses. (This info was supplied by the Genealogy.com<http://genealogy.com/>message board dated Jun 3,1999. I went back to this site and there doesn't appear to be any additional messages to this board since Aug 7, 1999 and that was simply a question to the orignial message.) My notes state that the possible marriage to Eleanor Pfeiff was 1730. I have conflicting info on the arrival of Senior. One note states he arrived in 1738 with my source being "Penn German Pioneers" by Shessburger and Hanke, pg 116, list 457. A corresponding note indicates that he was naturalized in 1738 by an act of Assemby in NJ. My personal "gut" feeling is that this is the incorrect info since the Two Brothers roster includes Junior. He would have only have been about 7 if this were true and we all have Eva Ann Wagner and Willhelm Blum as arriving with him on 15 Sep 1752. Senior's will was apparently written in Mansfield, NJ on 23 Dec 1788 and probated on 3 Apr 1793 (Sorry don't know where I got this info) Additional conflict on the Rootsweb boards indicate that some believe that Senior and Eleanor Pfieff were born and died in Finland, not Germany. Again, the death info is directly in conflict with the Two Brothers ship roster, however, there is nothing yet to dispute that Senior moved to Germany before Juniors birth which according to my source was in Dierdorffschen, Neuweid, Germany. There was a great deal of religious upheaval at the time and the Protestants were forced to move from place to place as a country changed leaders and that leaders level of tolerance. Additionally, Finland was twice occupied by Russia in the 18th century (1714-1721 and 1742-1743) so moving out of Finland may have been expedient. For historical info the Ship Two Brothers was captained or Mastered by Thomas Arnot and sailed from Rotterdam, Netherlands to Philadelphia. It was capsized in 1754 and betwen 200 and 300 Palatines were drowned. (Pennsylvania Journal September 25, 1754) "The term "palatinate" or "Palatine" comes from the title given a Roman official, "Palatine", who was sent by Caesar to govern the southwestern section of Germany after the conquest of Gaul in the first century. The Palatine immigrants came from aa area of the Palatinate on the Rhine River...(the area) became a war-torn, devastated Rhine Valley subject tot he raveages of the religious and political wars of the 17th Century...(The French ruled this land and) mandated that they become Catholics (1708-1709)...Queen Anne's agents had agreed that all who wished to leave the Palatinate and find there way down the Rhine to Rotterdam would be transported to England by English ships. (to see the complete article go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyherkim/history/pala.html) Palatines were from the section of the Rhine called the Palatinate, between Worms and Cologne but was used loosely to include Germans from other adjacent territories. This was quite aways from the Netherlands but as you can see from the above article it was not uncommon for them to travel down the Rhine to Rotterdam. The Netherlands was bordered by Finland. There is also a contingency out there with an ancestor by the name of Johan Peter BLOM who was born in Sweden, but I think this is a completely seperate family and I'm only including this as an FYI. Alright, last but not least here is the 1752 ships list for the Two Brothers Source: http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/pal_2bro1752.shtml [List 177 C] At the Court House at Philadelphia, Friday, the 15th of September 1752. Okay, folks can we sort this out and come to a reliable conclusion? PS. Let me throw this out as well. Mariah Lutz married Adam Bloom, son of Junior Blum. It might mean nothing but I thought it interesting.
