Lots of hits in the Clearfield Progress for Arch Johnstone. He was not only the vocal musical director at the Curwensville high school, but a counselor who made many talks about town and lead music groups at local churches. Did copy this one: Clearfield Progress, Saturday June 11, 1960, page 2 HELLO, WORLD! Mr. and Mrs. Arch Johnstone of Curwensville are the parents of a 7 lb, 4 oz baby boy born in the Clearfield Hospital at 5:21 p.m. June 10. Mrs. Johnstone is the former Alliene A. Hi Colleen, What a great idea! How are you doing this; writing it or tape or....??? I would love to hear the particulars on how this is being accomplished. Colleen, I lucked out and found several obits in the Clearfield Progress online. 30 July 1970 paper, Ann Johnstone, age 85 of Clymer, died at her daughter's home in Altoona. She was a member of the Clymer Presbyterian church, interment was in Bloomington Cemetery, Curwensville. Let me know if you'd like the transcription of this obit, or Florence Morgan, sister of Ann Hutchison Beechey, who was also buried in Bloomington Cemetery; or the obit for Thomas D. Beechey, very brief, who died 38 yr 7 m 10day of influenza on 1 Nov 1918. Hi Beverly, There is no 1890 Census Record. It was destroyed by a fire in the Archives where it was stored. The only thing that was saved was a few Civil War Pension Records. It has caused many a person some grief when trying to piece together other records to find where the moved to. Try church records, Town Records and County records to find what you need. Hi all, I am searching for Civil War Records on William Harrison MILLER, born 17 July 1814 in Clearfield Co.,PA; registered 25 Aug 1862 in Clearfield Co., PA and deserted 16 Feb 1863. Are there any records that would tell more about the "desertion"? Did they sign up or just enlist? Thanks very much. Maxine
Janet, They were still around for the 1880 census, but I don't have a death date for them. The majority of the MAINS were buried at "Shiloh". Judith

I am new to this list, and descend from: Henry MAINS, b. 1820 and Maria TURNER b. abt 1819 They married 1 Oct 1835 and had 11 children. I descend from their 2nd child, Nancy Jane MAINS, b. 1838 who married William BRITTON and had just one child, Maria Viola BRITTON who married Benjamin Detwiler SMITH of Lycoming County, PA. Henry and Maria TURNER MAINS and William & Nancy Jane MAINS BRITTON all lived in Bradford Township, Clearfield County in the 1870 census. I think Nancy Jane died soon after that. Would like to know when they died and where they are buried. Are there transcriptions of the cemeteries in Bradford Township?

Hello Leah! Your last name nearly jumped off the page for me. I went past the old Waring homestead outside Morrisdale, Clearfield County about 2 months ago. I used to work at Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport PA with Tom Shoff. His father was a Funeral Director - in Phillipsburg, if I remember correctly. The Waring connection is that Tom is related to Fred Waring, the great band leader. I don't think Tom is a grandson - I think Tom's Mother was perhaps Fred Waring's sister? Anyway, the Waring name brought back some very good memories, even though I'm not able to contribute anything to Maryann's interest in where the County Jail was located. .........Grant Berry "Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around."
