Hi - Please can someone advise me where in Clearfield a Marriage before 1885 would be recorded ? Does one have to know what Church, or Minister, etc. to contact ? Thanks, Sally
All marriage records are listed in the computer in the Register & Recorder's office. You just need to type in the name you are looking for and it will show the newer marriage applications which are scanned and can be printed off the computer. The older marriage records are not scanned but the computer will show you which book to look the marriage application. All copies are 50 cents per page. Does anyone know how to look up a record once you are there? I went once to look for something else & tried to find a couple of marriage records but wasn't sure I was looking correctly or if the records just weren't there. The records I was looking for at the time were on people from Houtzdale, PA, Clearfield Co. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Amy E. K. How about a little more details about where marriage records can be found pre 1885? The County of Clearfield was formed in 1810 I believe but records were located in Centre County for a while. Any more details out there? Renee L. Waring ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
This discussion of marriage licenses reminded me of an article I found some time ago and I thought you might enjoy it. Editorial from the Centre County PA newspaper, "The Centre Democrat" Thursday, June 25, 1885. LICENSED MATRIMONY "One of the vexed questions of Pennsylvania social economy has been the laxity of her marriage and divorce laws. A man and woman could marry themselves and they were about as easily divorced. Marriages were hasty and repentance not as leisurely as one might suppose...This laxity in our marriage and divorce laws was having a relaxing effect on the moral of the people...The new marriage law is one step in the direction of reform in the social economic question of marriage and divorce." "No person can get married without a license from the Clerk of the Orphans' Court; no person can obtain a license unless legally qualified. Minors cannot obtain a license without the written consent of parents or guardians. No person legally qualified to perform the marriage ceremony of his church or society can do so unless the license is first produced, under penalty of one hundred dollars. There can be no sham or mock marriages, elopements will not be so easy and bigamy without perjury will be impossible. Young and innocent girls will be protected from the machination of designing villains, who, under the guise of a secret marriage, accomplished their ruin. On the whole we regard the bill as one of the best measures passed by the last Legislature and one that will be of lasting benefit to the Commonwealth. If the Governor signs it, it will go into effect October 1, 1885." Beverly Carter bcarter2@wi.rr.com No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. I'm looking for help identifying people, places and relationships in a bunch of old family photographs from Indiana, Cambria and maybe Clearfield counties, Pennsylvania. I have put these photos on a website. If you can help with any information, please use the contact form on the website. http://mysite.verizon.net/vzepnqiv/index.html Thanks, Rick Stuby
>From Caldwell's 1878 atlas, page 78: "Ramey: from Gulich Township March 29, 1893 (Q.S. Docket #8, page 70.) The name was chosen because of the D. K. Ramey Company having a large lumber mill at this point, which mill was the main support of the town. Its first post office was established in 1877." Please note this raises a big question, How does an atlas published in 1878 know that the boro of Ramey comes from the township of Gulich/Geulich in 1893? Of course, there was the post office by that name at that time (1878). There also is a map of Geulich Township on page 86 that shows Ramey. On page 218: Part of the advertising directory. "Ramey Post Office Ramey D. K., Son and Co., Lumbering. West Alfred, Sawyer. Miller John, Engineer. Laing Richard, proprietor Boarding House, and Woods Boss. McCauley Charles, Book-keeper." >From Aldrich's 1887 History of Clearfield County, page 536: "Ramey.--The northern town of the township is that of Ramey, which is probably directly due to the effect of the branch railroad running along that border of the township. This is the only town or village in the township which enjoys the advantages of a railroad. In 1877 the post-office was made at this place, and here is a handsome Methodist Church. A large mill and heavy lumber business is here controlled by D. K. Ramey and Company, employing about one hundred men. The business men are Frederick Alvon, blacksmith and James Croyle, blacksmith, S. J. Fox and others; while recently a handsome school-house has been built." What year was Ramey Boro created? Perhaps it wasn't in existance at the time you are searching for it. Perhaps it would help if you would search the Twp. What is the earliest year you can find the family on a census? Look for the neighboring people. Check their names out of the next earliest census. The name you are looking for may be spelt a little differently on the census. Remember the census taker would spell the name the way he would have heard it pronounced. Ramey was established in 1878 according to this site: http://www.phmc.state.pa.us/bah/DAM/counties/pdfs/Clearfield.pdf . Although this indicates it was established as a borough on that date, on the 1880 census pages it's listed as "Village of Ramey in Gulich Township." Just guessing here, but perhaps it didn't go from a village to a borough until 1893. See also this Wikipedia site which addresses "Settlements (including cities, towns and villages) established (ie first settled or otherwise came into existence) in the year 1878": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Settlements_established_in_1878 P. Looking for information on Annie WEBER b ca. 1880 +-5 and Elizabeth Weber b. same range. These ladies were Sisters of Mercy, attached to Dubois Hospital. These ladies are my greataunts, sisters to George G. Weber, b. 1876, Cameron County, d. 1947/8 Dubois, Clearfield, PA. They died in the late 1920s/early 1930s in the TB epidemic. I have searched for information for over 30 years, checking with parishes where they may have been baptized or attended as youngsters, calling the St. Catherine's in Dubois, writing to mother house in Erie, etc. The only things I have found are a listing of their residence in Dubois, and a newspaper clipping showing one of them with a group. While chatting with a cousin who lives in Dubois, she casually mentioned that she recently saw their pictures on a wall in one of the halls of Dubois Medical Center. ARGHHHH!!!! She has no interest in genealogy, and wouldn't think of offering to try to procure the pictures. When I asked, she gave me some general information on how I might obtain a copy of the pictures. I looked on line for a human resources department or some other person at the medical center, whom I might contact. But that information was limited also. I will be calling tomorrow. In the meantime, I'm wondering if anyone on list has suggestions, or knows anyone who works at the hospital who might have information on how to go about securing copies of these pics. Any help, suggestions, would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Jan J. Leigh Strange, CCHT, RMT. Ask me about hypnotherapy or Reiki for pain relief, healing energy, skill rehearsal, spiritual emergency, past life regression. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

I also had the experience of when I first got Internet, that Ancestry com was free and that is where I got my basic information from a lady whose husband was a Curry descendant. If it hadn't been for that FREE information, I don't know if I would ever have gotten anywhere. Verdena Veelle vveelle@molalla.net
