Robert Allison's book "Marriage Records of Clearfield County, Pa, prior to October 1, 1885" is a great resource, he did all the work of finding the records in the newspapers, DAR records, family genealogies, etc. You can get the book from the Clearfield County Historical Society as Jim Curry mentioned in his email. There is also a CD now available, "Centre County, PA Marriage Index, 1764-2005". Previously there were a couple of books published by the Friends of Centre County Library and Historical Museum, covering 1800-1885. The new CD has added all the extra years. You can always go to a Family History Library Branch at a Latter Day Saints Church (Morman Church) and order the film with the marriage index for Clearfield Co., PA. I think they only charge about $4 for the film. Go to this site: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHL/frameset_library.asp Click on "Library - Family History Library Catalog"; Then Click on "Place Search"; On this page type 'Clearfield' in the place box; 'Pennsylvania' on the part of box; Then click on 'Pennsylvania, Clearfield'; Then click on 'Vital Records' which will take you to some early marriage records Don't forget to click on 'View Film Notes' so you'd know what film you'd want to order. My grandparents who lived in Allegheny Co., PA, eloped in Wellsburg, Brooke Co., WV, in 1914. Hope this helps a little. If anyone has questions regarding the Clearfield Courthouse records, I would be glad to answer them. I am self-employed and perform title searches for attorney's at the courthouse and am very familiar with dockets from judgments in the Prothonotary's Office, to real estate deeds, wills, marriages, in the Register & Recorders Office. I am also familiar with the mapping and assessment office which tells me where a property sits in Clearfield County. So if I don't know the answer to your questions, I know who to ask. The Clearfield Historical Society donated a book to the Clearfield Courthouse that has "some" marriage license info before 1885. It is NOT a complete record of marriage applications. There were no records kept/recorded before 1885 EXCEPT at the local churches and/or your family bible. In glancing at the Historical Society book there are mentions of marriages from 1794, 1877, 1846....etc......but again it is not a complete list of names for Clearfield County. It basically is a list that was compiled from someone going around to the local churches and making a list of names and dates.
