    3. Sue, when I made the SS search and came up empty I thought there was something like that, and perhaps this confirms a very latent suspicion. I will follow up on your suggestion. 3. I am trying to find my long lost grandfather, Clifford D. or David C. HERDMAN. He left Clearfield County sometime around the first decade of the last century, probably with his brothers Frank and Ernest, for the State of Washington. I think that they settled in Tacoma, but it was Pierce County. He married my grandmother Hazel LEONARD and they had a child, Julia Mary, born in 1916 in Pierce County. By the 1920 census they had split up, and possibly a divorce had occurred. He registered for the World War I draft at the age of 29, giving his address as 410 3rd Street, NE, Puyallup, Pierce Co., Washington St. He owned a cleaners and dyers in Puyallup at that time. Here is where we have some trouble. It appears that there were two Herdman families in Clearfield County, and they both had Clifford's around the same age. We have recovered draft cards for both boys, and the other Clifford was Clifford B. Could they be cousins, because the data we have do not discriminate between the two families. Apparently, the grandfather we have lost was the son of Jesse and Mary C. HERDMAN. That does track with the naming of the daughter, named Mary for one mother and Julia for her grandmother on the mother's side. (But to complicate matters, Julia Mary was also listed as a HERTMAN.) Any help filling out this picture would be greatly appreciated. Oh yes, this grandfather was located in the 1960's living in Redlands, CA. But there are no death notices in California, nor have I been able to locate social security information. He was probably employed by the Southern Pacific Rail Road. The census information that we have early on shows that a David was back in Pennsylvania - but that is all we have to go on. Regards, Jim Carroll

    3. I believe railroad workers had their own retirement system, so they would not be in the Social Security system. A search at www.google.com for retirement "Southern Pacific railroad" brings up the following site: http://www.genealogytoday.com/guide/railroad-employees.html There is a link to Southern Pacific Railroad that links to: http://www.csrmf.org/doc.asp?ID=272 Hope this helps. 3. I am doing my Clearfield County, PA, Lawhead tree and was trying to find the decendents of Wilson Hoover and Elnora Lawhead and discovered something one of you may find interesting. Three of their children were William A., Walter, Ruri (sp- a son). 1900 Census for Breitenbush, Marion County, Oregon William Hoover June 1847 age 52, born in PA, lumberman Almira Hoover Nov 1848, his wife, age 57, born in PA Walter Hoover Nov 1860, brother age 40, born in PA, lumberman Nellie Hoover Feb 1863, wife age 37, born in PA next house Ruri.. Hoover Nov 1859, age 40, born in PA, lumberman Martha Hoover Sept 1867, his wife, age 32, born in PA Theron Hoover Nov 1897, son, age 2, born in OR Johnny McCracken, Apr 1836, father-in-law, age 64 born in PA, laborer Sam P. McCracken, Mar 1864, bro-in-law, age 36 born in PA, carpenter Velma Hoover Nov 1891, daughter, age 8 born in PA Freda Hoover Jun 1893, daughter, age 6 born in PA Looks like they went together to Oregon sometime after 1893 & before 1897, cause Theron was born in 1897. I was excited cause all I had to go on was a little note I picked up somewhere which said William Hoover had died in Detroit, Oregon. (Thought I had the wrong state for a minute but Rootsweb locator said it was Marion County in Oregon) Claire

    1. Re: [PACLEARF] Thompson - obit
    2. What an obit of a life of service! I met you this summer and we determined that we share the Kirk/Fisher line. That was my paternal grandmother's line. On my paternal father's line I am most likely related to Elizabeth Ogden. William Blum/Bloom had twelve children. His daughter Elizabeth who managed a cruel winter as a teen in Clearfield County married Daniel Ogden's son Matthew. Elizabeth's older brother Isaac married Sarah Apgar and they had a daughter Pricilla who married John Norris. John and Pricilla had sixteen children, four of whom my father always said were in the Civil War. So far I can find proof on only three of them. One of their sons Moses Cammeron had two daughter's Abigail and Martha Mertie Norris. These daughters married two brothers, Law and Reuben Whitaker. Mertie as she was known, was my great grand mother. Interestingly enough her Aunt Lovenia Norris, daughter of John and Pricilla, married first Truman Wall and after being widowed married my gguncle, William Helper, who was my mother's great uncle. Sorry about the loss of you mother, Jean Brugger ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

    2. Judith Heald
    3. Iva Thompson Walter - November 27, 1911 – September 7, 2007 Iva Thompson Walter passed away on September 7th 2007 at Ware Presbyterian Village. She was 95 years old and had been a resident at Ware for more than 10 years. She was the widow of T. Barnard Walter who died in 1966. Born in Clearfield County, PA, she was the daughter of Adelbert E. and S. Blanche Watson Thompson. She graduated from Clearfield High School, and then Loch Haven College in 1931. She taught in one-room schools in Clearfield County prior to her marriage in 1934. For the first 11 years of their marriage, she and Barney served as the manager/operators of a farm for Philadelphia Electric Company in Conowingo, MD. They then moved to Upper Oxford Township, near Homeville where they operated Ivanard Farm, a dairy farm with Registered Guernsey cattle. They also raised chickens for eggs, sheep, and Hampshire hogs. Active in Russellville Grange and Faggs Manor Presbyterian Church, they started 4-H clubs in Southern Chester County and were both very involved with Cooperative Extension activities. In addition to 4-H Clubs, Iva was instrumental in starting a Homemakers Club in the Upper Oxford Area. Iva returned to teaching 3rd and 5th grades in the Avon Grove School District until the mid 1970’s. She taught Sunday School and served as a trustee and as an elder at Faggs Manor, and in 1975 spent 6 months as a substitute teacher in Tanzania with African Inland Missions. Active in the Missionary Society, her support of missions continued the remainder of her life. Iva crafted and gave away nearly 100 Teddy Bears. She knitted, crocheted, sewed, hooked rugs, gardened, canned and froze the produce from her gardens, did crosswords, and read. A lifelong learner and teacher, Iva took graduate classes at West Chester, traveled to the Holy Land, and was active in the Business and Professional Women. During WWII, she volunteered as an airplane spotter, looking for and identifying enemy planes. While watching for planes, she knitted khaki colored socks for soldiers. She and Barney worked hard to get electricity into a one-room school in Conowingo before their eldest child began first grade. During the spring of 1942 the school was open several evenings – with lights on – so people could sign up for ration books. Iva’s immediate and extended family has always been important to her. Iva and Barney raised several foster children in addition to their own. Following and enjoying her family’s adventures continued through her final hours. She is survived by her children, Sally Moore and her husband Bill of Chatham, PA, Dave Walter and his wife Cindy of Wyandotte, OK; Judy Heald and her husband Bill of Spring Mills, PA; and Anne Smith Goffredo of Wilmington, DE. Eleven grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild will remember her with love. A sister, Gwendolyn W. T. Frye and a brother, Graydon L. Thompson predeceased her. Family and friends are welcomed to a Celebration of Life on September 29th at 10:00 a.m. at Ware Presbyterian Village Chapel. Memorial contributions in Iva Walter’s name may be made to The Chester County 4-H Center, Inc., P.O. Box 327 Honey Brook, PA  19344, or to her African Mission families through Charlotte Wrigley, 174 Fernwood Road, Cochranville, PA 19330. Online messages may be sent to www.elcollinsfuneralhome.com (Parents of Adelbert Ephriam Thompson are Prochorus Milo Thompson and Martha Jane Moore. Parents of Sara Blanche Watson were William Wesley Watson and Elizabeth Ogden). Iva is my Mom, so if you think we connect genealogically, she and I would both welcome your contact. 1. [PACLEARF] Index to Some Northern Allegheny County Cemeteries
    2. Amy E. K. Arner
    3. There is a free cemetery index available at www.NorthHillsGenealogists.org for several northern municipalities in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania: Franklin Park Borough, Marshall Township, Pine Township, Richland Township and Hampton Township. This is a comprehensive index to three _Pioneer Cemetery_ books compiled by the North Hills Genealogists (NHG) [of Pittsburgh]. NHG has completed a total reading of the oldest cemeteries in the above municipalities. Reading every stone in any cemetery founded before 1900, they have preserved the cemetery information in the northern Allegheny County area. The books are hardcover, library-quality and include *unpublished* church records and full tombstone descriptions with color, condition, symbols, and stone carvers' names for all stones, cross-referenced to the church burial records. Indexed and cross-referenced with maiden names, military units, place names, fraternal symbols and funeral home directors. Maps, directions, histories of each cemetery, illustrations, and photos enhance the volumes. Please feel free to forward this notice to anyone you think may be interested. Best regards, Amy Arner
