A complete obituary will be published Friday in The Derrick. Sister Mary Ann Keating, OSB, 86, died Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at her home, Mt. St. Benedict Monastery, after a long illness. A daughter of the late Bernard and Anna Barker Keating, she was baptized Mary Eileen at St. Joseph Church, Oil City, and attended the parish school. Sister Mary Ann entered the Benedictine Sisters of Erie on July 2, 1940. She made her first profession of vows on June 29, 1942, and her perpetual vows on Aug. 21, 1945. She was a graduate of St. Benedict Academy and attended Villa Maria College in Erie and Stonehill College, Northeast, Mass. She was certified in dietary management and ministered in food service throughout most of her religious life. She served at St. Joseph and Sacred Heart Convents, Sharon, St. Joseph Convent, Oil City, Kennedy Catholic High School and John XXIII Home, Hermitage. She also served at the residence of the bishop of Erie in the tenure of Archbishop John Mark Gannon and Bishop Alfred M. Watson, at the former motherhouse on Ninth Street and at Glinodo Center. Sister Mary Ann was later a receptionist at Benetwood Apartments and at Mt. St. Benedict Monastery, both in Erie. She was a remarkably skillful cook and her kitchen was as orderly and as clean as a surgical suite. She could prepare a picnic or a banquet, each with equal care and equally excellent results. When she managed the kitchen on Ninth Street, young sisters were assigned to help with the simple tasks. She taught them how to mash potatoes and how to clean a stove; how to brown a roast and how to scrub the pots, pans, floors, tables, sinks, windows and doors until they were bright and shining. Early in the morning the kitchen was rich with the aromas of bread rising on the back of the stove and coffee brewing. Mary Ann saw the sisters off to school and made sure they were well nourished. A good lunch followed and she welcomed them home with another feast, whether it was the simple supper of Lent or the contentment of the ordinary days. She served three good meals a day, seven days a week for decades; to bishops and archbishops, dozens of teenagers, elderly residents of John XXII and her sisters in community. Mary Ann had nine brothers and three sisters; she was next to youngest and the last to follow them all to God. She is survived by her Benedictine community and by her nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. A service of memories will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and the Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday, both at the monastery.
