"Scotty" Mensch Getting it right - Lois Jean Winters Howard L. Barger, 89, of the McKinley Health Center in Brookville, formerly of Western Avenue, Brookville, passed away Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, at the McKinley Health Center. Born Dec. 31, 1918, he was the son of Joseph A. Barger and Edna McElravy Barger of Karns City. On Sept. 7, 1941, he married the late Dorothy A. Miller in Oakland, Md. Mr. Barger enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 and served in the India-Burma Theatre. He remained in the Air Force Reserves after World War II and retired after 27 years. He owned Howard's Photography Studio in Brookville for 20 years and also worked for Clarion University as a staff photographer. Mr. Barger is survived by his two sons and one daughter, Thomas Barger of Bradenton, Fla., Ellen Barger of Alexandria, Va. and Michael Barger of Brookville. He is also survived by his brother, Joseph Barger of Gretna, La.; two grandchildren, Carol Thompson of Hunt, N.Y, and Scot Barger of Wheeling, W.V.; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the McKinney Funeral Home in Brookville. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to VFW Post 2145, 603 Liberty St., Clarion, 16214. Josephine Barron, 87, of Marienville, a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008, surrounded by loving family at her home. Born Dec. 9, 1920, in Marienville, she was the daughter of Clarence and Maude Altman. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Barron was a devout Catholic and was a member of St. Ann Roman Catholic Church in Marienville. She sang in the church choir for many years and was a eucharistic minister. During her lifetime, she was a dedicated homemaker, and her children fondly remember the clothes she sewed for them. Besides being a 4-H leader, she worked as a home health aide for the Visiting Nurses Association and as a typesetter for the Marienville Express newspaper. She also held many other jobs while raising her children. In her later years, she was a member of the "Recycled Teenagers" Kitchen Band. Josie was an avid bingo player, she enjoyed golfing and bowling, and she loved to travel. She was married July 15, 1944, to Joseph Barron, who preceded her in death Jan. 24, 1996. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Carol (Richard) Cochran, Mrs. Mary (Don) Clymer and Mrs. Debra (Kevin) Carter, all of Marienville, and Mrs. Peggy (Randall) Custer of Tionesta; two sons, Robert Barron and his wife, Michelle, of Grand Forks, N.D., and Kenneth Barron and his wife, Debra, of Marienville; 22 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren. "Grandma B" will be missed by all. In addition to her parents, family members and husband, she was preceded in death by two infant children and one son-in-law, Richard Cochran. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Ronald McDonald Funeral Home in Marienville. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann Church in Marienville. The family suggests memorials be made to St. Ann Roman Catholic Church or the Clarion/Forest VNA. Edward A. Burnett Sr., 76, of Tionesta, formerly of Greenville, passed away at 3:14 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, at Titusville Area Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Burnett was born Nov. 6, 1931, in Sharon. He was the son of the late Arthur Earl and Florence DeEtte Heasley Burnett. Mr. Burnett attended Penn High School. He was employed as a truck driver and farmer. Mr. Burnett was of the Protestant faith. He enjoyed working on motors, going to the races and auctions, hunting, camping and spending time with his family. He also loved animals, especially his dogs. Mr. Burnett was the husband of Linda Williams Burnett, who survives him at home. He is also survived by his previous wife, Beverly Jean Shields Burnett of Greenville; three sons, Edward A. Burnett Jr. and his wife, Myrna, of Jamestown, Bill Burnett and his companion, Elaine, of Greenville, and Kenny Burnett; and three daughters, Debbie Smith and her husband, Jeff, of Jamestown, Linda Banic and her companion, Mark, of Jamestown, and Bonnie Adams and her husband, Jack, of Greenville. Also surviving are a stepson, Phillip Mowery and his wife, Rachel, of Brockway; three step-daughters, Tina Lohr and her husband, Kevin, of Greenville, Theresa Mowery of Greenville and Tammy Hodge and her husband, Bill, of Greenville; one brother, James Burnett and his wife, Roberta, of Jamestown; one sister-in-law, Doreen Burnett of Mesa, Ariz.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather who raised him, William R. Wade; and one brother, Charles Burnett. Born March 16, 1933, in Cornish, N.H., she was the daughter of the late Edward and Nettie Josephine Seaman George. Mrs. Chapman was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her beloved husband, James H. Chapman; two daughters, Cathy Stewart and her husband, Dave, of Grand Junction, Colo., and Laura Schweiger and her husband, Bill, of Economy; three sons, Jason Chapman and his wife, Marty, of Montrose, Colo., Peter Chapman and his wife, Wendy, of Greensburg, and James L. Chapman and his partner, Glenn, of Kyogle, Australia; eight grandchildren; one step-grandson; a brother, William George of Eastport, N.H.; and a cousin, Richard George of Claremont, N.H. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Chapman was preceded in death by a brother, Henry George; and a sister, Irene Latva. A private service will be held for the immediate family. Louise R. Hamelly, 88, formerly of Grove City, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008, in the Trinity Living Center, Grove City. She was married to Henry J. Hamelly. Among her survivors in this area are children Elizabeth Spence, John Hamelly, James Hamelly and Mary Louise Thompson. all of Grove City. Ronald E. Huffman, 70, of Huckleberry Ridge, Knox, went to be with his beloved Janice, his late wife, at 3:41 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, 2008, at UPMC Northwest in Seneca after an extended illness. Born Dec. 4, 1937, in Summerville, he was the son of the late Dallas C. "Sawdust" and Essie Brocious Huffman Sr. Mr. Huffman retired from PennDOT in 1993. He was a member of the Knox Servicemen's Club, the Clarion County Rod and Gun Club in Knox and the Clarion VFW. He loved hunting and fishing, card games with his friends, watching "Little House on the Prairie" and playing with his grandchildren. On Aug. 24, 1963, he married Janice Henry, and she preceded him in death Aug. 26, 1994. Mr. Huffman is survived by five sisters, Louella Beichner of Shippenville, Shirley Texter of Knox, Patricia Stitt and her husband, John, of Cherry Run, Romaine Schreckengost of Putneyville and Carol Brown of Six Points; two brothers, Robert Huffman and his wife, Gladys, of Knox and James Wayne Huffman and his wife, Mary, of Clarion; and a nephew that was like a friend and brother, Dennis Beichner of Shippenville. He is also survived by his extended family, including his girlfriend, Joan Gorham, and her daughter, Barb Hurst and her husband, Scott, and their children, Courtney and Tyler Hurst, all of Knox; and her son, Ed Gorham and his wife, Elaine, and their children, Rachel, Andrew, Becky and Edward, all of Tennessee; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Huffman was preceded in death by three sisters, Delores A. Riston, infant Geraldine Mills and Mona Lou Huffman; two brothers, Dallas C. Huffman Jr. and William Glenn Huffman; two brothers-in-law, Duane "Tex" Texter and Paul Beichner; and two nephews, Mike Huffman and David Beichner. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the David C. McEntire Funeral Home Inc., 504 East Penn St., Knox. Interment will follow at Cedarview Memorial Park near Strattanville. David Lee King, 50, of 120 King Lane, Franklin, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2008, at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh. Born Sept. 16, 1958, he was the son of the late Robert A. King and Lois V. Johnson Ace. Mr. King was a 1976 graduate of Franklin High School and Venango County Area Vocational-Technical School. He had been employed at Joy Mining Machinery as a machinist since June 1990. Mr. King loved bowling with his two sons, playing in the Joy golf league, spending time with family and friends and riding his Honda Goldwing. On June 16, 1979, he married the former April Lee Hovis, and she survives. In addition to his wife, Mr. King is survived by two sons, Jonathan D. King and his wife, Amanda, of Oil City, and Nicholas D. King of Franklin and his girlfriend, Brittany Graff, of Clintonville; and two grandsons, Parker D. King of Benton, La. and Lee Moyer of Oil City. Also surviving are his mother, Lois V. Ace of Franklin; one sister, Kathryn A. King of Franklin; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Gina and Darrell King of Rutledge, Tenn., and Dawn and Steve Wheeling of Franklin; two nieces, Whittni and Leah Wheeling of Franklin; his mother-in-law, Garnet L. Hovis of Franklin; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. In addition to his father, Mr. King was preceded in death by his stepfather, Gerald M. Ace; his father-in-law, R. Duane Hovis; and one brother, Robert A. King Jr. There will be no public visitation. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Grace United Methodist Church, 350 Front St., Franklin, with the Rev. Ed Gresick officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Huff Chapel Inc. of Franklin. Thomas O. Radack, 67, of 5 Locust St., Rouseville, died Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 21, 2008, at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh. The Reinsel Funeral Home in Oil City is in charge of arrangements. A complete obituary will be published Thursday in The Derrick. Dr. John T. Rightor, M.D., 77, of Oil City passed away peacefully at 8:06 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008, at UPMC Northwest in Seneca, following an extended illness. Born Oct. 9, 1931, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of Albert P. and Dorothy Rightor. He attended Bellevue High School and graduated from Mercersburg Academy. He received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Lafayette College and his medical degree from Jefferson Medical University. Following his internship at West Penn Hospital of Pittsburgh, he began his lifelong medical career in Bellevue before establishing his practice in 1961 in Oil City. He married Helen Louise Sheriff on June 15, 1957, in her hometown of Portage, and she survives. Dr. Rightor served the community through his medical practice, professional and civic societies, and volunteerism. Among his professional affiliations were the Pennsylvania Medical Society, American Medical Association and the Venango Medical Society, and he was a diplomate of the American Association of Family Practitioners. He was a lifelong member of Christ Episcopal Church in Oil City, a member of the church vestry and an avid choir member. Dr. Rightor gladly served as the school physician for the Oil City High School athletic programs and enjoyed more than 20 years on the sidelines at football games. His interests included golfing, skiing, choral and classical music. His tenor voice contributed to the harmonies of the Venango Chorus for many years. He was an active member of Wanango Country Club and, as his friends knew well, he loved his golf. Through the years, he participated in many tournaments and celebrated two "hole-in-one" events. In addition to his beloved wife of 51 years, he is survived by his five children, Rebecca Auerbach and her husband, David, of Irvine, Calif., Kathryn Rightor of Kennewick, Wash., John Rightor of Sultan, Wash., David Rightor of Dillsburg and Dorothy DeSanto and her husband, Mike, of Lansdale. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Lauren Louise Auerbach, Erin Nicole Auerbach, Anthony Joseph DeSanto and Ryan Michael DeSanto. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, David, of Columbus, Ohio. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Hutchinson Funeral Home, 201 Bissell Ave., Oil City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Christ Episcopal Church, 16 Central Ave., with the Rev. Victor J. Kinnunen officiating. Interment will follow in Grove Hill Cemetery in Oil City. "Scotty" Mensch, 93, of Golden Living Center, Shippenville, formerly of Marienville, died at 11:15 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008, at UPMC Northwest. Born June 25, 1915, in Kane, she was the daughter of Orvel S. and Leora E. Simpson Scott. Mrs. Mensch was a graduate of Grove City College where she was president of the Delta Omega Rho Sorority. She was postmaster at Marienville for 35 years and was past president of the Warren Forest Chapter of the National Association of Postmasters.
