McDonald Getting it right - Betty Long Wilt Marilyn A. (Hill) Boyer, 83, formerly of Oil City, passed away peacefully at 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, with her family at her side, in the Lake Anna Elder Care Home in Bumpass, Va., near Richmond. Born May 15, 1925, in Dempseytown, she was the daughter of the late Forrest E. and Lottie Turner Hill. Mrs. Boyer attended Oakland Township High School and graduated from Oil City High School in 1943. She was an active member of the Oil City First Church of God, holding various positions including president of the Oil City Women of the Church of God for 20 years, Sunday School teacher, choir member, pianist and organist. She was still teaching Sunday School and playing the organ at age 77. She continued serving the church as pianist, at the Church of God in Richmond until age 80. In addition, to her service at her local church, she served as secretary for the Western Pennsylvania Women of the Church of God for 15 years. Mrs. Boyer worked in the offices of the Boy Scouts of America, Worthington Corp. and the First Church of God in Oil City. Her hobbies and interests included politics, girls basketball, reading, cooking, gardening, and attending Church of God camp meetings, both in Emlenton and in Anderson, Ind. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren. She was married in Dempseytown on June 9, 1951, to Evan C. Boyer, who preceded her in death on July 2, 2004. Surviving are a daughter, Connie Boyer and husband, Thomas Rogers, of Richmond, Va; three sons, Ronald Boyer and wife, Polly, of Kettering, Ohio, Donald Boyer and wife, Diane, of Severn, Md. and Vaughn Boyer of Tampa, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Dr. Robert Boyer of Boston, Mass., Angela Boyer of Columbus, Ohio, Heather Boyer of Kettering, Ohio, Christopher Boyer of Indiana, and Michael, Steven, and Rebecca Boyer, all of Severn, Md. Also surviving are a sister, Ruth Gricks of Oil City; a brother, Forrest Hill of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Martino. Box 31, Hawthorn, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, at Golden Living Center in Clarion. Born Aug. 5, 1926, in Cottage Hill, Porter Township, he was the son of Fredrick John McConaughy and Audrey Katherine (Wells) McConaughey. He was a laborer for Amos Dolby Company. Mr. McConaughy was affiliated with Oakland Church of God in Distant. He was first married to Marie (Wadding) McConaughy, and she passed away in 1993. He then married Cleda Virginia (Eckard) McConaughy, and she survives in New Bethlehem. Mr. McConaughy enjoyed hunting. He is survived by two sons, Robert B. and Pamela McConaughy of Hawthorn and James F. McConaughy of Rimersburg; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Marie McConaughy; one son, William McConaughy; and two daughters, Susan and Patricia McConaughy. Interment will be at Alcola Trinity Cemetery in Redbank Township, Clarion County. J. Leroy Montgomery, 99, of Prairie Street, Harrisville, died at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at his residence. Born Jan. 30, 1909, in Grove City, he was the son of Andrew Montgomery and Bertha (Welton) Montgomery. Mr. Montgomery lived in the area his entire life. He was a 1928 graduate of Harrisville High School. He owned Montgomery Block Plant of Harrisville, where he worked from 1935 to 1973, when he retired. He also worked at Cooper-Bessemer in Grove City as a machinist from 1928 to 1945. Mr. Montgomery was a member of Harmony Presbyterian Church in Harrisville, where he was a former trustee. He was the last surviving Charter member of the Harrisville Lions Club. He was a member of Grove City Lodge 603 F&AM, a member of New Castle Consistory, Syria Shrine, and a former member of Grove City Sportsman Club. He was an avid bowler for more than 40 years, an avid hunter and an avid traveler, visiting all of the states except Alaska. Mr. Montgomery was married to Sarah M. (Renick) Montgomery on May 28, 1941. He is survived by one daughter, Cheryl Dee Strader of Harrisville; two grandchildren, Kimberly A. Bromley of West Chester and Douglas A. Strader and his wife, Theresa, of Baltimore, Md.; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy Hoffmann of Grove City. Mae Rothen, 69, of Emlenton died at 12:56 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, in Butler Memorial Hospital, following an illness. She was born April 23, 1939, in Wexford, a daughter of William G. and Mary Elser. She was a long-time active member of St. Michael Roman Catholic Church in Emlenton, and she also was a member of the church's Altar Rosary Society, Soup Group and PURLS ministry. She enjoyed collecting prayer books and working puzzles. Mrs. Rothen was a homemaker and enjoyed the company of her family and friends. She and Carl F. Rothen Jr. were married Oct. 6, 1962, at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Cabot, Butler County. Mr. Rothen, whom she loved, adored and missed very much, preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 2004. Mrs. Rothen is survived by two sons and their wives, Neal C. and Margaret Rothen and Eric G. and Mary Rothen, all of Emlenton, and two daughters and their husbands, Carla S. and Doug Cratty of Connoquenessing and Amy and Raymond Kaufman of Parker. Ten grandchildren also survive: Erika, Justin and Kiersten Rothen of Emlenton, Kevin, Danielle and Emily Kaufman of Parker, and Jessica, Brittany, Rebecca and Jordan Cratty of Connoquenessing. She also is survived by two brothers and their wives, James "Jim" and Mildred Elser of Wexford and Albert "Burt" and Iris Elser of Slippery Rock; a sister, Lois Gass of Flagstaff, Ariz.; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Born May 23, 1924, in Kennerdell, he was a son of Ralph Sopher and Melissa Mae (Gadsby) Sopher, Rae served in the Army Air Force during World War II and was a member of the Air Force Cadets, training as a navigator and pilot. Following the war, he entered college on the GI Bill and earned his bachelor of science degree in metallurgy from Grove City College in 1949, and a master of science degree in metallurgical engineering from Ohio State University in 1956. Rae enjoyed a distinguished career as a metallurgist. He worked in mechanical and physical metallurgy at Battelle Memorial Institute from 1950 to 1959 and at General Dynamics Corp. from 1959 to 1962, where he worked on the development of ultrasonic inspection of submarines. He joined the I.B.M. Components Division in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. in 1962, and later became manager of Semiconductor Technology Development in Essex Junction, Vt. Rae received special recognition in 1967 for his research, and has received numerous invention awards and patents for his work on semiconductor device metallurgy. Rae retired from I.B.M. in 1995 to form a partnership with his son, Myron, as founders of Sopher Investment Management in South Burlington, Vt. Throughout his life, Rae was devoted to community service, serving as a school board member and Boy Scout leader in communities where he lived in Ohio, Connecticut and New York and as a deacon of the churches he attended there. In the 1970s Rae served as selectman and planning commissioner for the Town of Shelburne and was also a member of Shelburne/Charlotte Rotary. He was a director of Shelburne Farms from 1990 to 1998 and guided decisions as a director of the Lintilhac Foundation, for more than 20 years. Rae grew up on a small farm near Grove City, where he met his future wife, Jeanette. He loved skiing and the outdoors, enjoyed fishing, hunting, managing woodlands and always taught people to respect, revere and protect nature for future generations. He leaves his loving wife Jeanette, to whom he was married for 65 years; his three children, Joe and Julie Sopher of Bristol Vt., Myron and Lenore Sopher of Shelburne, Vt. and Crea and Philip Lintilhac of Shelburne, Vt.; grandchildren, Melissa and her husband, David Moran, of Bristol, Vt., Matthew and Lauren Sopher of Shelburne, Vt. and Louise, Will and Paul Lintilhac of Shelburne, Vt.; and great-grandchildren, William, Katherine and Caleb Sopher of Bristol, Vt. He is also survived by two brothers, Kenneth Sopher and his wife, Mary Olive of Ohio and Dale Sopher and his wife, Doris of Pennsylvania. Rae was predeceased by three brothers, Leroy, Isaac and Lester; and one sister, Marion Hovis, all of Pennsylvania. "Tricia" Winger, 40, of 141 River St., Oil City, died at 10:50 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008 at UPMC Northwest in Seneca, after an extended illness. Born Dec. 14, 1967, in Oil City, she was the daughter of Paul W. Winger Jr. and Jane E. Rhodes Winger. Patricia attended Oil City schools and Sugarcreek Elementary through the Intermediate Unit 6 and graduated from Grant Street School. She enjoyed T-Ball, swimming, bowling, camping at Wesley Woods and participating in Special Olympics. She had worked at the Venango Training and Development Center, and was involved with the Springboard program through UCIP and the Easter Seals. Patricia was a member of Our Lady Help of Christians Church.
