McConnell, Grove Manor Nursing Home, Grove City, formerly of Ivan Drive in Grove City and Barkeyville Jacob E. Mason, Autumn Grove Care Center, Harrisville Russell E. "Butch" Schreckengost, 1085 Route 1025, New Bethlehem Patty A. Thompson, Bruin Lauren Sue Turk, Knox Fred E. Baker, 82, of Banning, Calif., formerly of 6 Rich St., Oil City, died peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008, after a long battle with cancer. Born May 4, 1926, in Oil City, he was a son of the late John H. and Ethel London Baker. He was a 1944 graduate of Cranberry High School and served in the U.S. Navy on the Admiralty Islands during World War II. Mr. Baker worked at J & L Steel until 1958, when he moved his family to Garden Grove, Calif. He continued to work in the steel industry and was a member of the Teamsters Union until his retirement in 1991. He was married Feb. 14, 1947, at the Grace United Methodist parsonage to the former Arabella Uncapher, who preceded him in death Jan. 22, 2007. Surviving are four children, Mrs. Steven (Connie) Burdi of Chino, Calif., Bonnie Krueger of Oxnard, Calif., Mrs. Joe (Priscilla) Fuchita of Chino Hills, Calif., and Fred Baker Jr. and his wife, Maria, of Temecula, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Survivors also include a brother, John D. Baker of Oil City; two sisters, Mrs. Jesse (Pauline) Benton of Oil City and Genevieve Lynch of Oklahoma City, Okla.; three sisters-in-law, Katie Baker of Oil City, Louise Baker of West Chester, Ohio, and Frances Wood of Corry; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Kenton; six brothers, Howard, Chester, Ardell, Tony, Jim and Kenny Baker; and two sisters, Dorothy Baker and Goldie Callen. Mr. Baker returned to Oil City in the summer of 2007 and truly enjoyed visiting relatives and many of his classmates and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Weaver Mortuary Chapel in Beaumont, Calif. Interment will follow at Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, Calif. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 10 E. First St., Oil City, 16301. Michael J. Brown, 63, of 24 W. Front St. Oil City, died unexpectedly Friday, Oct. 24, 2008, in his apartment. He had formerly lived at 526 Merritt St. Born July 25, 1945, in Oil City, he was a son of the late Robert and Sophie Gill Brown. He attended St. Joseph Grade School and was a graduate of Oil City High School. He had also attended Venango Campus. Retired, Mike had previously worked as a quality control supervisor at Continental Can for 17 years and as a sales representative for Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens. He was of the Catholic faith. Mike's love for life was known to all who knew him. He enjoyed fine dining and cooking for others. He enjoyed music, especially his favorite singer, Gordon Lightfoot, and was an avid Steelers fan. His love for his grandchildren and family topped everything else. Surviving are a daughter, Marcy Jo Lusher of Polk; two sons, Michael Brown and his wife, Jessica, of Chesapeake, Va., and Nicholas Robert Brown of Edinboro; and four grandchildren, Dalton and Julia Lusher of Polk and Michael and Gracie Brown of Virgina. Survivors also include two sisters, Mary Anne Brown Pastor of Oil City and Patricia Montgomery and her husband, Bill, of Meadville; a brother, Steve Brown of Columbus,Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday in the gathering space of St. Joseph Church in Oil City. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. with Msgr. John W. Swoger, presiding. Internment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. The family suggests memorial donations be made in Mike's name to the St. Joseph Church Development Fund. Cope, 40, of Fryburg, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at his residence in Cranberry. Born Sept. 23, 1968, in Clarion, he was the son of the late Raymond Cope Sr., who died Nov. 8, 1977, and Rita (Beichner) Kiehl and step-father Richard Kiehl, who survive. He was employed by Snyder Auto Body in Tylersburg until a recent decline in his health. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed spending his spare time hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed spending time with his family. In addition to his mother and step-father, he is survived by one daughter, Morgan Cope of Cooperstown; and a companion, Rose Anderson of Fryburg. He is also survived by a sister, Rebecca Hodges and her husband, Kirk, of Venus; a brother, Raymond Cope Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of Oil City; and numerous nieces and nephews In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Rhonda Webber; and an infant son. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Faller Funeral Home Inc. in Fryburg. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home with the Rev. Larry Aldrich, of Van Free Methodist Church, presiding. Interment will be in the Perry Chapel Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be made to the Humane Society. Joann A. Frena, 69, of 1234 Eagle Rock Road, Oil City, died at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at St. Vincent Health Center in Erie after an extended illness. Born Sept. 13, 1939, in Creighton, she was the daughter of the late Henry S. and Rose A. Decroo Molchen. Mrs. Frena had lived in the Oil City area for last 11 years and had worked at the call center for Blair Manufacturing. She was a member of St. Venantius Church in Rouseville. She also was a member of the PNA, Pulaski and Oil City Moose Clubs and was an avid Pittsburgh Steeler Fan. She was married Sept. 13, 1958, to Edward Frena, who survives in Oil City. Survivors also include two sons, Mark E. Frena and his wife, Anita, of London, England, and Alan R. Frena of Findlay, Ohio; a sister, Betty J. Watkins of Natrona Heights; a brother and his wife, Richard and Edna Molchen of Madison, Ohio; and five grandchildren, Nick, Victoria, Alexa, Catherine and Christine Frena. There will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Venantius Church in Rouseville, with the Rev. Matt Ruyechan, pastor of St. Stephen/ St. Venantius churches, officiating. The Hutchinson Funeral Home, 201 Bissell Ave., Oil City, is in charge of arrangements. Sarah J. Grove, 74, of 117 Orchard St., Franklin, died at 9:05 p.m. Saturday evening, Oct. 25, 2008, at her home. The Timothy E. Hartle Funeral Home of 1328 Elk St., Franklin, is in charge of arrangements. McConnell, 82, of Grove Manor Nursing Home, Grove City, formerly of Ivan Drive, Grove City, where she lived for 10 years, and Barkeyville, died at 6:50 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at Grove City Medical Center following an illness. Born May 30, 1926, in Grove City, she was a daughter of Carlyle Martin and Weltha Hoagland Martin. A self-employed beautician, Mrs. McConnell owned and operated Dorothy' s Beauty Shop in Barkeyville for 30 years. She was a member of Hickory Grove Church of God, Victory Township, Venango County. She was married May 24, 1946, to Sherman Ralph McConnell, who preceded her in death Oct. 5, 1995. Surviving are two sons, Joseph C. McConnell and his wife, Sandra, of Kennerdell, and Jeffrey R. McConnell and his wife, Valerie "Kim," of Barkeyville; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant brother, Joseph C. Martin; and a grandson, Jeffrey McConnell. Mason, 75, a resident of Autumn Grove Care Center in Harrisville, died there at 2:15 a.m. Sunday, October 26, 2008. Born April 1, 1933, in Clarksburg, Va., he was a son of the late Jacob and Carrie Culvert Mason. Mr. Mason was a self-employed construction worker. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and the outdoors. Mr. Mason was married Aug. 6, 1982, to the former Darlene Felmlee of Franklin, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Jacob Mason Jr. and wife, Lisa, of Pittsburgh, and Kenneth Mason and wife, Casandra, of Kennerdell; two daughters, Jill Love Torres and companion, Eddie, of Hubert, N.C., and Jeanine Torres and husband, Andres, of Kearneysville, W.Va.; and a step daughter, Kiley Felmlee Manning of Oil City. Survivors also include 14 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; five brothers Floyd, Stanley, Frankie, Tommy and Matt Mason; and one sister, Laura. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jerome Mason of Pittsburgh; and three sisters, Lois, Carrie and Carol. There will be no visitation. The family will hold funeral services at a later date in Harper's Ferry, W.Va. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the family to assist with expenses. "Butch" Schreckengost, 91, of 1085 Route 1025, New Bethlehem, went to be with the Lord at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, while at home surrounded by his family. Born Nov. 7, 1916, in Putneyville, he was a son of Oliver H. and Lettie Smith Schreckengost. Mr. Schreckengost was a construction worker for Operating Engineers Local 66 of Pittsburgh. He was a member of Cottage Hill Wesley Methodist Church. He was also a member of New Bethlehem Lodge No. 522 F & AM and the Coudersport Consistory. He was married Jan. 18, 1941, to the former June M. Hilliard, who survives. Survivors also include two sons Keith L. Schreckengost and friend, Lynn Struthers, of New Bethlehem, and Barry L. Schreckengost and his wife, Brenda, of Delta, Colo.; a daughter and her husband, Kay E. and Allen Kephart of Cresent; a sister, Maxine Orr of New Bethlehem; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Howard, Walter, Stanley, Ted and Daniel Schreckengost; and a grandson, David Schreckengost. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with pastor Daniel Clyde of the Cottage Hill Wesley Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery, Mahoning Township, Armstrong County. Patty A. Thompson, 49, of Bruin, the wife of Rickie J. Thompson, whom she married July 22, 1978, and mother of Kayla (Ryan) Smith of Parker and Joe (Natalie) Thompson of Erie, passed away Sunday, Oct. 26, 2008, at her residence following an extended illness. Lauren Sue Turk, 48, of Knox, went on to be with her Lord after a courageous battle with breast cancee Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Born March 30, 1960, in Pittsburgh, she was a daughter of Robert S. Stoker and Norma J. Hartman Stoker. Mrs. Turk was a teacher's aide in the Keystone School District. She was a member of the Knox United Methodist Church, where she served on various committees and taught senior high Sunday school for many years. Mrs. Turk started the Blankets of Love ministry. She enjoyed stamping, trips to the beach, reading and puzzles and found great joy in spending time with her family and friends. She was married Oct. 29, 1983, to Bruce E. Turk, who survives. Bruce and Lauren would have celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this Wednesday. She is also survived by her mother, Norma Stoker of Pittsburgh, and her father and his wife, Robert S. and Verla Stoker of Pittsburgh. Survivors also include a son and a daughter, Matthew Turk and Caitlin Turk, both at home; a sister, Heather Conrad and her husband, Bob, of Pittsburgh and their children, Laura and Danny; her mother-in-law, Janet Turk of Titusville; a brother-in-law, Jeff Turk and his wife, Nancy, of Sharon, and their children, Allison and Carly. She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents; and her father-in-law, Raymond Turk. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. today at the William N. Rupert Mortuary of Knox. Funeral services will be held at 11a.m. Tuesday at the Knox United Methodist Church on West Railroad Street in Knox. The Rev. Donald Poole will officiate. Interment will follow at the Knox Union Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Blankets of Love Ministry, in care of the Knox United Methodist Church, P.O.
