    3. The Derrick, November 6, 2008: Michael E. Hemmerling, Eau Claire Ruth Y. Lindsay, Ridgewood Road, Shippenville Clara A. Mattingly, 351 Causeway Drive, Franklin Ethel R. Melvin, of Sunbury Fields Lane, Butler, formerly of Grove City Hila Mae Stewart, Golden Living Center, Oil City Paul E. "Moose" Wyant Sr., 3413 Lamberton Road, Franklin Michael E. Hemmerling, 65, of Eau Claire passed away at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh. He was the husband of Esther Miller Thompson Hemmerling. Mr. Hemmerling served in the U.S. Air Force , achieving the rank of staff sergeant, and served several tours in Vietnam. He retired from US Airways as an aircraft mechanic. Ruth Y. Lindsay, 81, of Ridgewood Road, Shippenville, passed away at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, in Clarion Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete and are under the direction of the Robert V. Burns Funeral Home in Clarion. A complete obituary will be published Friday in The Derrick. Clara A. Mattingly, 93, of 351 Causeway Drive, Franklin, died at 7:50 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at Sugar Creek Station. Born July 1, 1915, in Washington, D.C., Mrs. Mattingly was the daughter of the late Francis Xavier Auth and Marie Koppers. She was married Oct. 25, 1955, to John L. Mattingly, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Mattingly was employed with USN/Federal Government-Department of Navy as a clerk/typist. She was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Franklin, where she was very active in the choir, sodality, and as a Eucharistic minister and lector. She was also active at churches in Rehoboth, Del., and Silver Spring, Md. She was involved with senior citizens clubs. Mrs. Mattingly was one of the first physical education teachers in grade schools after President John F. Kennedy initiated physical education in the schools. Mrs. Mattingly is survived by three children, John J. Mattingly and his wife, Christline, of York, S.C., Carol M. Maul and her husband, Andrew, of Franklin, and a stepdaughter, Sister John Bernadine SSJ of Philadelphia.; six grandchildren, Frank V. Weltner III of Erie, Jennifer M. Weltner of Pittsburgh, John T. Maul of Franklin, and Thomas J. Mattingly, Christine Mattingly and Valerie Mattingly, all of York, S.C. She is also survived by two sisters, Sister. M. Rosalia, SSND, and Sister M. Bernarde, SSND, both of Baltimore, Md. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Mattingly was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers. There will be no visitation. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church with Msgr. John Herbein officiating. Arrangements are being handled by the Robert W. Melvin, 90, of Sunbury Fields Lane, Butler, formerly of Grove City, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at Grove Manor Nursing Home in Grove City after residing there for only three weeks. Born June 30, 1918, in Franklin Township, Butler County, she was the daughter of the late Roy W. Campbell and Emma K. Kroll Campbell. She was married Jan. 10, 1942, to William "Cloyd" Melvin, who preceded her in death Sept. 16, 1986. A devoted housewife and mother, Mrs. Melvin also drove a school bus for Moore's Bus Service of Clintonville for the Victory and Franklin Area School District for 27 years. She also worked as a clerk at G.C. Murphy in Franklin. Mrs. Melvin attended elementary school at Mt. Chestnut in Butler County. She also attended Eakin Elementary public school in Irwin Township, Venango County, and she graduated from Wesley High School in Wesley. Mrs. Melvin was a member of Pleasantview United Methodist Church, where she played the piano for a number of years. She also played the piano for the Wesley and Barkeyville United Methodist churches. Gardening and crocheting were some of her hobbies, as well as baking wedding cakes. Mrs. Melvin is survived by three daughters, Judith A. Giesler and her husband, Daryl, of Slippery Rock, Bette J. Sommers and her husband, Edward, of Mercer, and Barbara L. Bobetich and her husband, Kenneth, of Berlin, Germany; nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Melvin was preceded in death by two sisters, an infant, Eleanor Ruth Campbell, and Lois Pearl McCutcheon. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Larry E. McKinley Funeral Home, 109 Emlenton St., Clintonville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Clintonville United Methodist Cemetery. Friends may e-mail condolences by visiting www.mckinleyfuneralhome.net Hila Mae Stewart, 83, a resident of the Golden Living Center of Oil City, formerly of West Middlesex, passed away peacefully at 11:40 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at the Golden Living Center after a lengthy illness. Born Oct. 13, 1925, in Columbus Junction, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Minnie Syphrit. Mrs. Stewart was a 1943 graduate of West Middlesex High School. She was a member of Shenango Valley Baptist Church in Hermitage, where she was well known for her piano playing for church services. She enjoyed playing bingo, crocheting, playing the piano and traveling. In her earlier years, she performed custodial services for various establishments, and she also worked at the Sharon Steel Restaurant and Isaly's Restaurant. She was married to Glenn E. Stewart, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 19, 1992. Mrs. Stewart is survived by a daughter, Gail Robinson; a son, John Stewart; a stepson, Clayton Peters; and two stepdaughters, Linda Sokie and Loretta Dukes. She is also survived by two nieces, Janet Wagner and her husband, Tim, with whom she made her home before moving to the Golden Living Center, and Diana Wood; a nephew, John Wood and his wife, Bonnie; two grand-nephews, Philip Wagner and his companion, Connie; and Joseph Wagner and his wife, Candace; two grand-nieces, Shannon Schubert and her husband, Kenneth, and Jennifer Wagner; and numerous great-grand nieces and great-grand nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Stewart was preceded in death by three brothers, Alvin Syphrit, Loren Syphrit and Carl Syphrit; a sister, Alice Hoover; a son, Donald R. Stewart; a great-nephew, Michael Wood; and close friends and sisters-in-law Betty Milner and Edna Mae Gharing. Friends and family are welcome to attend a memorial service to celebrate Mrs. Stewart's life at 3 p.m. Sunday at Shenango Valley Baptist Church, 40 South Neshannock Road, Hermitage. The Rev. Dr. Phillip Cooper, church pastor, will officiate. Interment will be in Haywood Cemetery in West Middlesex, Mercer County. "Moose" Wyant Sr., 74, of 3413 Lamberton Road, Franklin, died peacefully at 4:17 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, at UPMC Northwest in Seneca. Born June 12, 1934, in Franklin, he was the beloved son of the late Charles E. Wyant Sr. and Elsie Wilson Wyant. Mr. Wyant worked as a steelworker at Franklin Steel, retiring in 1993 with 43 years of service. Following his retirement, he helped drive for Lepley's Bus Service. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed camping with his family, hunting and working in the woods cutting timber. He also attended flea markets and many of the local frys. He enjoyed playing cards and watching NASCAR racing. Most of all, he enjoyed spending quality time with his family, most especially his grandchildren. He was married Oct. 20, 1956, in Franklin by the Rev. B.E. Coleman to the former Betty Lou Morrison, who survives. In addition to his wife of 52 years, Mr. Wyant is survived by one son, Paul E. Wyant Jr. and his wife, Gayle, of Cooperstown; and two daughters, Margaret Ann Myers and her husband, Lee, of Carlton, and Cynthia Jean Armburger and her husband, Larry, of Franklin. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Christopher and Dustin Wyant, ThomAnn Buttray and her husband, Shawn, Amanda Walters and her husband, Scott, and Michael Scott Armburger; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Helen "Honey" Gibson, Lois Lepley and Gwen King, all of Cooperstown. In addition to his parents, Mr. Wyant was preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth Wyant, Charles E. Wyant Jr. and Robert F. Wyant Sr. In accordance with Mr. Wyant's wishes, there will be no public visitation. Private family services and interment will be in Cooperstown Cemetery.
