The Derrick, June 9, 2009: Otis M. Davenport, Vine Street, Marienville Fred S. McMahon, Titusville Edward Loren Rhodes Sr., Aurora Colo., formerly of Acme Street, Rimersburg Ebba M. Young, Kittanning Otis M. Davenport Jr., 88, of Vine Street, Marienville, a decorated veteran of World War II, passed away Sunday night, June 7, 2009, at his residence. Born Nov. 27, 1920, in Austin, Pa., he was the son of Otis M. Davenport Sr. and Edith G. Allison Van Why. Mr. Davenport served in the Army during World War II. He received the Defense Service Medal with six Bronze Service Stars, two Purple Hearts, a Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the American-European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Bronze Star Combat Infantry Badge, the Good Conduct Medal and a World War II Victory Medal. He was married Dec. 17, 1965, to the former Willa Murdock Dixon, who survives. Mr. Davenport retired in 1974 from Marienville Glass. He was also a bus driver in earlier years. He was a member of Marienville United Methodist Church. He was past president of the Marienville Area Civic Association (M.A.C.A.) and was on the board of directors. He enjoyed word puzzles, jigsaw puzzles and playing cards with his wife. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Robin Heasley and husband, Ronald, of Leeper, Otis Davenport and wife, Linda, of Jeanette, David Dixon and wife, Pierette, of Georgia, Carol Rulhman and husband, Virgel, of Marienville, Marsha Silvis and Robert Selker of Clarion, Richard Dixon and wife, Chris, of Marienville and Gloria Conboy of Erie. He also is survived by his sisters, Aldean Cochran, Doris Fawler and Norma Roseman; and his second family, Donna Frost, Rita Beichner, and Jim Olson. Also surviving are numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ed Van Why and Fred Van Why; and one sister, Lucille Cochran. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Ronald McDonald Funeral Home in Marienville. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home with the Rev. Randy L. Evans, a Hospice chaplain, officiating. Interment will be in North Forest Cemetery. Born Aug. 26, 1922, in Meadville, he was a son of the late Lloyd and Hazel Wagner McMahon. He was married April 7, 1951, in Chapmanville, to Helen Ray Altenburg, who survives. Mr. McMahon attended Meadville schools. He entered the U.S. Army on Feb. 17, 1941,and was a veteran and POW of World War II. He was held captive from Nov. 8, 1944, until his release at the end of the war on May 8, 1945. He was employed for 33 years at the former Universal Cyclops Specialty Steel Corp. in Titusville and previously worked for American Visco in Meadville. Mr. McMahon attended Chapmanville Community Church. He was a member of Bruce Shorts Post No. 5958 VFW in Titusville, a member of Cleo J. Ross American Legion Post No. 368 in Titusville and a member of BPO Elks No. 264 in Titusville. He enjoyed hunting and woodworking and in his earlier years took interest in boating, camping and traveling with his family. Mr. McMahon liked vintage airplanes and enjoyed building models. He was also an avid NASCAR fan. After retirement, he became involved with U.S. Army reunions and enjoyed traveling to attend them. He was a member of the 28th Division Heritage Association, the 112th Infantry Regiment Association, the Barbwire Association of Northwestern Pennsylvania and the American Ex POW Inc. In addition to his wife, Mr. McMahon is survived by a son, Michael K. McMahon and wife, Linda, of Beaver Falls; a daughter, Susan R. McMahon of Fitchburg, Mass.; a granddaughter, Megan R. McMahon of Beaver Falls; a sister, Veda McMillen of Largo, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Theda Snooks McMahon of Clarion; a brother-in-law, Robert Walton of Saegertown; a close family friend, Terri Phaneuf of Fitchburg, Mass., who was like a daughter; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter Mickey McMahon and Carl McMahon and three sisters, Evelyn Walton, Arlene Shay and Dorothy Boughner. A memorial service will be held at 6:45 p.m. today in the funeral home by members of the Bruce Shorts Post No. 5958 VFW. Edward Loren Rhodes Sr., 78, of Aurora, Colo., formerly of Acme Street, Rimersburg, passed away May 27, 2009, at the University of Colorado Hospital, Aurora, Colo. following a lingering illness. Born Feb. 15, 1931, in Rimersburg, he was the son of Lester "Deb" Rhodes and Margaret Truitt Rhodes. He graduated in 1949 from Union High School in Rimersburg. He was married Nov. 17, 1951, in Manchester, N.H., to the former Katherine P. Knee, and she survives. He and his wife Katherine lived on Acme Street in Rimersburg until April 30, 2009, when they moved back to Colorado, where Mr. Rhodes had been stationed with the U.S. Air Force, on April 30, 2009. He was of the Protestant faith. He enlisted in the Air Force following high school graduation and entered the motorpool but was soon transferred into electronics where he became a radar repairman. He first served at Gibbsboro Air Force Base in New Jersey, then was transferred to Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colo., and then to Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora, Colo. He retired from the Air Force after 22 years of service as a senior master sergeant and then was employed at the Caterpillar dealership in Denver for an additional 15 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Jacalyn P. Newell and her husband, Rick G., of Aurora, Colo., Barbara Ann Walsh and her husband, Robert F., of Indianapolis, Ind., Deanna Lynn Freng and her husband, Bryan L., of Parker, Colo., and Donna Marie Jones and her husband, Matthew L., of Hillsboro, Ore.; a son, Edward L. Rhodes Jr. of Parker, Ore.; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lester Darl "Lefty" Rhodes and his wife, Joy, of Rimersburg and Robert Thomas Rhodes of Monaca; one sister, Connie L. Rankin of Rimersburg; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Rimersburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clayton E. Rhodes, a retired Methodist minister and Mr. Rhodes' cousin, officiating. Friends and relatives may gather at the church from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. to visit with the family. Interment was in Fort Logan National Military Cemetery in Aurora, Colorado. Young, 98, of Kittanning, formerly of Florida, died Sunday morning, June 7, 2009, at her home in Kittanning following a brief illness. Born Feb. 23, 1911, in Sweden, she was the daughter of Carl Martin Nelson and Anna Milsson Nelson, both of whom preceded her in death. She married Charles P. Young., who preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 1987. Mrs. Young was a homemaker. She enjoyed baking and crocheting. When she lived in Florida she was a member of the Garden Club in Fort Myers. She was a member of the Grace Presbyterian Church in Kittanning and the Presbyterian Women's Organization. Survivors include her nephew and niece, Jerry and Eunice Young of Kittanning, who were also her caretakers, and numerous other nieces and nephews living in Sweden. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Esther Sjobohm and Inez Waggoner. Friends will be received from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Rupert Funeral Home in New Bethlehem. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. The Rev.
