Shafer, Doc Walker Road, Parker, Village of West Monterey Russell J. Wolfe, Birdsboro Getting it right - Edward W. Reitz Getting it right - Frank G. Hess J. Richard "Bud" Gilger, 79, of Oil City, and Naples, Fla., died at 12:29 a.m. Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at Physicians Regional Hospital in Naples, Fla., following a brief battle with cancer. Born Dec. 12, 1929, Mr. Gilger was the son of John W. and Lela M. Orr Gilger. He was married May 7, 1966, in Emlenton to the former Elizabeth Breene, who survives. A 1947 graduate of Emlenton High School, he attended Westminster College before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Gilger served during the Korean War as a radio operator in Newfoundland. Following his military service, he returned to college and graduated from Penn State University in 1955. Mr. Gilger was employed by Industrial Colloids in Emlenton, where he was in sales. He later became part owner and partner at Industrial Colloids and retired from there in 1988. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church in Oil City. In addition to his wife, Mr. Gilger is survived by one son, John Gilger of Hamilton, N.Y.; two daughters, Elizabeth Gilger of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Jane Gilger Miller and her husband, Chris, of Overland Park, Kan; his grandson, Zachary Miller of Overland Park, Kan.; and a sister, Marilyn Gilger Beals and her husband, Duane, of Kyle, Texas. The Hile Funeral Home Inc. in Emlenton is in charge of arrangements. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23, at Second Presbyterian Church in Oil City. Interment will take place at Crawford Memorial Cemetery in Emlenton, where military honors will be accorded. Memorial contributions in Mr. Gilger's name may be made to either of the following children's charities - The Second Mile, 1402 South Atherlon St., State College, or Shriners Hospital, 1645 West 8th St., Erie. Nancy Jane Stubler O'Brien, 72, of Henrys Bend, died at 6:47 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, during emergency surgery at Zephyrhills Hospital in Zephyrhills, Fla. Born Dec. 10, 1936, in Oil City, she was the daughter of the late Peter C. and Julia I. Sterner Stubler. She was a graduate of St. Joseph High School in Oil City and earned her Bachelor of Science in early childhood cducation from Mercyhurst College in Erie. She enriched the lives of many students throughout her years of teaching at St. Stephen School in Oil City until she retired in 1993. Nancy was married May 2, 1959, to her loving husband, Francis P. O'Brien Jr., who survives. Mr. and Mrs. O'Brien were to celebrate 50 years of marriage this May. Mrs. O'Brien was a very talented seamstress who enjoyed quilting, knitting and sewing. She also enjoyed traveling and playing games of chance. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and she thoroughly enjoyed the company of numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. In addition to her husband, Francis, Mrs. O'Brien is survived by six children, Patrick O'Brien and his wife, Marlene, of Henrys Bend, Michael O'Brien, and his wife, Carrie, of Fertigs, Timothy O'Brien and his wife, Pamela, of Wilson, N.Y., Daniel O'Brien and his wife, Beth, of Cranberry, Erin Herman and her husband, Jason, of Oil City, and Colleen Stevenson and her husband, Michael, of Cooperstown. She was blessed with 14 grandchildren, Erica O'Brien and Sean O'Brien, Colin, Kevin and Kelly O'Brien, Anthony and Vincent O'Brien, Devon and Aidan O'Brien, Michaela and Benjamin Herman, and Kassidy, Brett and Joshua Stevenson. She is also survived by one sister, Mary Elizabeth Fleckenstein of Ransomville, N.Y.; and one brother, Charles A. Stubler of Arizona, formerly of Oil City. Mrs. O'Brien was preceded in death by six siblings, Mary Gertrude Homan, Peter Allen Stubler, Mary Catherine Lynch, Mary Patricia Anderton Hargenrader, Judith McNamara and Joseph Stubler. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Reinsel Funeral Home and Crematory in Oil City. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Stephen Church in Oil City with the Rev. Matthew Ruyechan, pastor at St. Stephen, officiating. Cole Shafer, past commander of the Parker VFW, died at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009, at Gulf Coast Hospital, Fort Myers, Fla. A memorial service in West Monterey is planned for a later date. Wolfe, 74, of Birdsboro, formerly of DuBois, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, of natural causes at Life Care Hospital in West Chester. Mr. Wolfe was born July 9, 1934, in Wolf's Corners, Washington Township, Clarion County, and he was the son of the late Myrtle Allio Wolfe and Lawrence L. Wolfe. He was a 1953 graduate of North Clarion High School. He married the former Shirley A. Copeland, and she preceded him in death Oct. 3, 2005. Mr. Wolfe was employed by National Fuel Gas Co. of Western Pennsylvania as a consumer business manager for 37 years before retiring in 1996. He was a member of Cedarville United Methodist Church in North Coventry Township, Chester County. Mr. Wolfe served in the U.S. Army during peacetime. He belonged to Union Lodge F&AM 479 in Birdsboro and the Rajah Temple. Mr. Wolfe is survived by two daughters, Dori J. Wolfe Smith of Chalfont and Karen K. Wolfe Long and her husband, Ronald, of Douglassville; one sister, Lulu Belle Wolfe Kline of Tionesta; and four grandchildren, Jill Smith, Paige Smith, Katelyn Long and Megan Long. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. Viewing will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Dengler Funeral Home Inc., 144 N. Spruce St., Birdsboro. Getting it right - Frank G. Hess Frank G. Hess, 86, of New Bethlehem, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 28, 2009, in St. Louis, Mo., following a courageous battle with progressive supra-nuclear palsy. Mr. Hess' survivors include a sister-in-law, Mrs. Wilbur "Peachie" Hess of Oil City.
