Barber, 83, of Pittsburgh Road, Harrisville, died at 8:40 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, at her residence. Born May 28, 1925, in Harrisville, she was the daughter of Maynard O. Fix and Edith R. Horton Fix. She was married April 12, 1955, to John R. Barber Jr., who preceded her in death July 31, 2007. Mrs. Barber ran Betty's Concession Stand and she co-owned Barber Tire Co. in Harrisville with her husband. She was of the Protestant faith. Mrs. Barber enjoyed bird watching, fishing and baking pies. She is survived by three sons, R. Gordon McNany of North Kingsville, Ohio, Glenn L. McNany and his wife, Audrey, of Salem, Ohio, and Ray Barber Jr. and his wife, Delores, of Vineland, N.J.; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Dessie L. Baker and her husband, Eugene, of Harrisville; and a brother, Sherrell Fix and his wife, Mary, of Hilliards. Mrs. Barber was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and a brother. Cotherman, 78, of Knox, died Sunday evening, Jan. 25, 2009, at Hamot Medical Center in Erie following a short illness. Born Aug. 1, 1930, in St. Petersburg, she was a daughter of the late Harold and Margret Ketner Nevel. She was married April 30, 1951, to Robert L. Cotherman, who survives. Mrs. Cotherman enjoyed crafts, sewing, knitting and her flower beds. In addition to her husband, she is survived by seven children, Diane Wensel and her husband, Don, of Sligo, Daniel Cotherman and his wife, Dianne, of Evans City, June D. Cotherman of Knox, Albert E. Cotherman of Knox, Arnold L. Cotherman and his wife, Lori, of Emlenton, Betty I. Lander and her husband, Jeff, of Lucinda, and Tammy J. Ferringer and her husband, Jeff, of Sligo. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Robert Nevel, Paul Nevel and Denton Nevel; five sisters, Bernice McCoy, Helen Raybuck, Betty Davenport, Georgie Landers and Barbie Grossman; a sister-in-law, Ruby Miller and her husband, Keith; and numerous nieces and nephews. Richard "Bud" Gilger, 79, of Oil City, died 12:29 a.m. Monday, Jan.26, 2009, at Physicians Regional Hospital, Naples, Fla., following a brief battle with cancer. Mr. Gilger was married to Elizabeth Breene Gilger Surviving him in death are a son, John Gilger of Hamilton, N.Y, and two daughters, Elizabeth Gilger of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Jane Gilger Miller and her husband, Chris, of Overland Park, Kan. Also surviving is his grandson, Zachary Miller of Overland Park, Kan, and a sister; Marilyn Gilger Beals and her husband, Duane, of Kyle, Texas. George Evans Kirkpatrick Hartzell, 97, of Mequon, Wis., a former resident of the Knox area, passed away early Sunday morning, Jan. 25, 2009. Born April 11, 1911, in Buckhorn near Knox, he was the son of the late Jacob and Jennie Myers Hartzell. He was married Nov. 16, 1932, to the former Mary Louise Slater, who preceded him in death on Jan. 26, 1983. The couple lived in Day City, Clarion County, and for a short time in Clintonville. In October 1941, they bought the "Rose Dairy" farm on St. Mark's Road in Ashland Township, Clarion County. After his retirement, Mr. Hartzell loved to raise and sell sweet corn and Charolais cattle. In November 1996 he sold the farm and moved to Pittsburgh to live with his daughter, Michelle Etzel, and her husband, Steve. They later moved to California and then Wisconsin. At the age of 12, Mr. Hartzell carried water to the construction workers on the Clarion River Dam to help support his parents, brothers and sisters. He started working in underground coal mines at the age of 16. While working for Abby Mays in the early 1950s, Mr. Hartzell earned a degree as a mine foreman from Penn State. He later worked for Charles Allaman at the Frogtown Mine and then Allison Engineering. Mr. Hartzell retired from C&K Coal Co. in 1973. Mr. Hartzell loved to tell stories about his American Indian/German great-grandparents who lived in the unsettled woods of Marienville and how they helped open the trails through the forest in the mid 1800s. His grandmother, Lena Winkler Hartzell, enjoyed telling him stories of his ancestors. Mr. Hartzell was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church near Kossuth. He was a deputy game warden for 30 years, working with Don Schake, James Bower and Jack Lauery. Mr. Hartzell is survived by three daughters, Shirley Moyar of Knox, Jean Stahlman and her husband, Mervin, of Knox, and Michelle Etzel and her husband, Steve, of Wisconsin; a son, George Thomas "Tim" Hartzell and his wife, Judy, of St. Mark's Road, Knox; and a daughter-in-law, Peggy Hartzell of Chicora. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, Debra Kahle, Bonda Reddinger, Georgie Hartzell, Donna Brosius, Vickie Kaltenbauch, Gary Brosius, Timmy Hartzell, Peggy Sprankle, Christine Chambers, Bonnie Wygant, Michael Stahlman, Donald Stahlman, Matthew Etzel, Mari Etzel and Becki Etzel; three step-grandchildren, Randy Bell, Jeff Bell and Tonia Yockey; 34 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Eva Schaffer of Centre County and Kathleen Fox of Venus; a brother, Ivan Hartzell of New York; and three sisters-in law, Mary Slater of Oil City, Lucy Hartzell of Knox and Jessie Hartzell of Knox. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Hartzell was preceded in death by two sons, John Hartzell in January 1968 and Chester Hartzell in January 2005; two sisters, Twila Bell and Bernice Paine; three brothers, Wilfred "Mex" Hartzell, Merle "Red" Hartzell and Ross Hartzell; one grandson, Francis Hartzell; and one great-granddaughter, Brinna Hartzell. McChesney, 81, of 103 North 13th St., Franklin, died at 10:10 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, at The Caring Place in Franklin. Born April 21, 1927, in Franklin, she was the daughter of William S. Phillips and Goldie E. Hepler. She was married Sept. 30, 1950, to Robert A. McChesney, who survives. Mrs. McChesney worked as a practical nurse for Polk Center. She also worked at Fairview State Hospital in California. She was a member of Victory Heights United Brethren in Christ Church. In addition to her husband, Mrs. McChesney is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Born Jan. 12, 1916, in Oil City, she was the daughter of David R. Metz and Eleanora C. Schwab Metz. She attended Oil City schools and had worked as a telephone operator for 43 years at the old Bell Telephone Co., which later became G.T.E. in Oil City. Ms. Metz was a lifelong resident of Oil City until the last 11 months when she was cared for by her nephew, Ted Metz, and his wife, Norma, in Titusville. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Oil City and was a life member of the Telephone Pioneers Club. Ms. Metz enjoyed gardening, watching the Pittsburgh Pirates, and taking Sunday trips with her sister, Luella, and Luella's son, Howard Bowen. Ms. Metz is survived by five nephews, Ted Metz and his wife, Norma, of Titusville, Richard Metz and his wife, Joann, of Georgia, Howard Bowen of Oil City, Ernie Swartzfager and his wife, Carol, of Oil City, and Harry Swartzfager of Brookville; four nieces, Louise Horning and Jane Godfrey, both of Watertown, N.Y., Joretta Widmyer and her husband, Henry, of Franklin, and June Henshaw of Franklin; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Ms. Metz was the last surviving member of her immediate family and was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Howard G. Metz and Orie D.
