Schubert Bessetti, 58, of the Oil City area, died at 7:31 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at UPMC Northwest in Seneca after a brief illness. Born Oct. 12, 1950, in Oil City, she was the daughter of Harry F. Schubert and F. Ardelle McClain Schubert. She was a 1968 graduate of Oil City High School and then later graduated from California University of Pennsylvania. She served as a volunteer for the Clarion County Historical Society. Ms. Bessetti was of the Protestant faith. Her hobbies included gardening, crocheting, craft projects and spending time with her grandchildren. She was self-employed in the desktop publishing field until an illness no longer allowed her to work. Ms. Bessetti is survived by her mother, F. Ardelle Schubert of Cranberry; a daughter, Maria Walker of Sigel; and three grandchildren, Brandy, Rhyan and Mikayla, all of Sigel. She is also survived by a sister, Margaret Tarr and her husband, Robert, of Franklin; six brothers, Gary Schubert and his wife, Virginia, of Texas, William Schubert of Cranberry, Joe Schubert and his wife, Jane, of Oil City, Frank Schubert and his wife, Karyn, of California, Mike Schubert and his wife, Kim, of Seneca, and Robert Schubert of Cranberry; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ms. Bessetti was preceded in death by her father, Harry F. Schubert; her grandparents; and a nephew, Shawn M. Schubert. A private viewing will be held for the immediate family. Born May 8, 1920, in Oil City, Mrs. Britton was a daughter of the late Herman S. and Frances Oviatt Miller. She was married Nov. 14, 1941, to Melvin W. Britton, who preceded her in death on March 6, 2008. Mrs. Britton was a 1938 graduate of Oil City High School and had lived in the Oil City area all her life. She worked at a number of businesses locally including Thrift Drugs Store, Raymond Dry Cleaners and Kessler's Dry Cleaners. She was last employed as a cook at the Presbyterian Home in Oil City. Mrs. Britton was a member of the Free Methodist Church on Willow Street in Oil City and was a former member of the Sweet Adelines. She is survived by a daughter, Ellen L. and husband, Leo F. Gefre, of Pawleys Island, S.C.; three sons, Wayne P. Britton and wife, Jane, of Erie, Gerald L. Britton and wife, Karen, of Warren and Melvin E. Britton and wife, Betty, of Oil City Mrs. Britton is also survived by a brother, Clair A. "Bud" Miller and wife, Beverly, of Dempseytown; two sisters, Mrs. Paul (Naomi) Rankin of Tyrone and her twin sister Mrs. Kenneth (Virginia) Mathews of Ann Arbor, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great- grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Britton was preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Mathews and Blanche Winger. Byerly, 73, of Leeper, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, in Cockeysville, Md., at the home of her daughter. Born Jan. 26, 1935, in McDonald, she was a daughter of James O. and Ruth Eiler Early. She was married Sept. 11, 1954, at St. Phillips Church in Crafton, to Charles E. Byerly, who survives. Mrs. Byerly graduated from Crafton High School in 1953 and delighted in her skills as a homemaker from the beginning of her marriage. She canned many fruits and jams from her abundant garden that she shared - in addition to her cooking and baking - with her family and many card-club friends. Mrs. Byerly was an expert seamstress, sewing clothes for all 10 children, including outfitting several brides and dozens of bridesmaids. Mrs. Byerly was mother to seven daughters and three sons. She created a home that was full of love and warmth and that drew many others to seek refuge in their midst. She fostered several high school boys and girls whose families were unable to provide them the necessary support. She also opened her home to several exchange students. Mrs. Byerly provided advice and counsel to several decades of children, family, friends and neighbors. The family home was frequented by people of all ages, faiths, races, abilities and beliefs. Mrs. Byerly and her husband raised their family in various places around the Pittsburgh area, including Wilkinsburg, Lawrenceville and Sheraden. During high school, she worked as a drug store clerk and secretary and volunteered as a Girl Scout leader. Some years later, she returned to work as a home demonstrator for Dutchmaid clothes. Mrs. Byerly spent many years as a caregiver, ensuring the preservation of dignity to the residents at Robinson Center and then at Mayview State Hospital. In 1988, she and her husband retired from Mayview to a new family homestead/cabin in Cook Forest. In addition, to her husband, Mrs. Byerly is survived by 10 children, Nancy Hahn and her husband, James, of Carlisle, Susan Byerly-McGee and her husband, Thomas, of Oakdale, Jean-Marie Padden and her husband, James, of Baltimore, Md., Charles J. Byerly and his wife, Ann Wolf, of Walland, Tenn., Ruth Gerhardt and her husband, Paul, of Baltimore, Md., Audrey Byerly of Michigan City, Ind., Pauline Hoffman and her husband, Rick, of Butler, David Byerly and his wife, Darla, of York, Linda Price of Leeper and Robert Byerly and his wife, Viola, of Carlisle. >From her children, Mrs. Byerly enjoyed the joyful lives of her 20 grandchildren, Chad, Julia, Rachel and Meghan Byerly; Caroline and Benjamin Gerhardt; Richard and Charlotte Hoffman; Nicole Lea; Gregory and Jennifer McGee; Vincent, Nancy, Rita, Victor, Victoria and Veronica Padden; Jane and Paige Price; and Jaimee Torkeo-See. Julia Mae Walter Ditz, 91, of Fryburg, formerly of Leeper, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at her home in Fryburg with her husband, Robert "Mex" Ditz and her family by her side. She was born May 18, 1917, in Grantham, England, to Mary Ann and Thomas Harold Hirst. In 1920, Mrs. Ditz's mother married Charles A. Bostaph of Vowinckel. Her mother and stepfather lived in India before coming to the United States and settling in Vowinckel. The former Julia Bostaph was married in 1935 to Francis "Jake" Walter, who preceded her in death April 17, 1996. On Feb. 14, 1998, she married Robert "Mex" Ditz at St. Mary Church in Crown. Mrs. Ditz was appointed postmaster of the Leeper Post Office in 1955 and retired in 1977. She liked playing golf, painting and writing. Mrs. Ditz is survived by her husband, Robert "Mex" Ditz of Fryburg; two daughters, Judy Fitzgerald of Leeper and Diane Schrecengost and her husband, Ron, of Columbus, Pa.; and six grandchildren, Laurie Sampsell and her companion, John George, Mike Schrecengost and his wife, Tonja, and Joe Schrecengost, all of Corry, Ken Smith of Corsica, and Jacob "Jake" Smith and Heidi Bauer and her husband, Hank, all of Leeper. Mrs. Ditz is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, Jessica Moore and her husband, Bill, of Kenmore, N.Y., Jacki McLaughlin of Leeper, Derek Bauer and his wife, Melissa, of Lucinda, Jacob Smith and Kathleen Smith of Corsica, Megan Sampsell of Townson, Md., Jana Sampsell of Corry, and Jordan Schrecengost and Joshua Schrecengost, both of Corry; one great-great-grandson, William Fitzgerald Moore of Kenmore, N.Y., a brother-in-law, Bernard Heasley of Edinboro, a sister-in-law, Eleanor Bostaph of Cleveland, Ohio; and many numerous Ditz relatives and numerous nieces and nephews. Betty Marie Hetrick, 83, of Cherry Run Estates, Rimersburg, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at her home following an illness. Born Oct. 22, 1925, in Huey, she was a daughter of Irvin J. and Clara B. Shick Hetrick. Ms. Hetrick retired as a nurses aide at Clarview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center near Sligo after many years of service. She was a member of Sligo Church of the Nazarene. Ms. Hetrick enjoyed knitting, crocheting and doing crossword puzzles. She is survived by a sister, Patty Wynkoop and her husband, Larry, of Cortland, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Ms. Hetrick was preceded in death by two sisters, Ludell Carr and Betty's infant twin, Audrey; and one brother, William Hetrick. A complete obituary will be published at a later date. James Rodney "Jim" McNany, 78, of 4141 200th St., Lake City, Fla., died at 2:10 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, in Haven Hospice, Lake City, Fla. Born Nov. 5, 1930, in Emlenton, he was the son of William Leonard McNany and Leah Kingsley McNany. He was a Korean War veteran and was awarded a Bronze Star. He was married July 6, 1954, to Barbara Smith, who survives. Mr. McNany worked as a draftsman for Joy Manufacturing Co. before he retired in 1992 and moved to Florida. Mr. McNany enjoyed hunting, fishing, landscaping/gardening and construction work, having built two homes for his family. In addition to his wife, Mr. McNany is survived by three children, Matthew McNany and his wife, Michele, of Portland, Ore., Stephen McNany and his wife, Deborah, of Middlefield, Ohio, and Valerie McNany; and four grandchildren, Lauren, Elizabeth, Andrew and Nathan McNany of Middlefield, Ohio. He also is survived by two brothers, Thomas McNany and his wife, Alberta, of Port Richey, Fla., and Richard McNany and his wife, JoAnn, of Summerfield, Fla.; two sisters, Sarah Louise Garlick and her husband, Earl, of Baden, and Leah Joann Addleman and her husband, David, of Cabot; and numerous nieces and nephews. Charles Frederick Osgood Jr., 87, of Keene, N.H., died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, in Keene, N.H., after a long illness. Born April 2, 1921, in Claremont, N.H., he was the eldest son of Mildred M. and Charles F. Osgood. After graduating from Stevens High School in Claremont, N.H., he attended the University of New Hampshire as a pre-med student. He served in the Marine Corps in the South Pacific during World War II. He was married in 1949 to the former Rita Bergeron, whom he met while skiing. Mrs. Osgood preceded him in death in 1994. The couple first resided in Pittsburgh, then Long Island, N.Y., and they finally settled in Westmoreland, N.H., in an early 19th century house where they raised their five children. Mr. Osgood was employed as a toolmaker for many years in Keene, and he also had his own machine shop in Westmoreland. Early in his career, he worked with his father, an inventor and patent attorney for the mining industry. Mr. Osgood was an amateur ski jumper and continued to enjoy cross-country skiing into his 70s. A passionate naturalist, he maintained a lifelong interest in wildlife - birds in particular. He loved music, and he especially enjoyed big band and jazz. Mr. Osgood is survived by five siblings, Margaret B. Osgood and Stephen J. Osgood, both of Franklin, John S. Osgood of Cicero, N.Y., Mary L. Irwin of Palestine, Ill., and Sarah L. Miller of Linwood, N.J.; five children, Charles F. III of Acton, Mass., Christopher E. of Princeton, Mass., Susan E. and Sarah J., both of Brattleboro, Vt., and Jill A. of Portland, Maine; and one grandchild, Michael S. Osgood of Acton, Mass. Born May 24, 1928, in Strattanville, he was the son of the late Floyd and Dora Kahle Spangler. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served as a military policeman. He was married Nov. 9, 1950, to the former Rita Ann Reinsel, who preceded him in death July 18, 1986. Mr. Spangler was retired from Bell Telephone Co. as a PBX technician after 35 years of service. He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church in DuBois, and he was also a member of the Telecom Pioneers. Mr. Spangler was an avid hunter and carpenter, and he enjoyed golfing. Mr. Spangler is survived by four children, William A. Spangler Jr. and his wife, Joyce, of Quakertown, Kathleen Kowalczyk and her husband, Paul, of Hawley, Mary G. "Trudy" Spangler of DuBois and Nicholas F. Spangler and his wife, Karen, of York; five grandchildren; and one sister, Annabelle Larimer of Elmyra Heights, N.Y. Mrs. Sutley was employed at Franklin Area School District as a custodian. She attended Allegheny Wesleyan Church. She also enjoyed cooking, crocheting, reading, shopping and most of all spending time with her family. Mrs. Sutley is survived by seven children, Robert T. Mr. Miller had been a member of the Oil City Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Color Guard for many years. Among his survivors is a son-in-law, Charles Jolly and his wife, Heidi, of Florida.
