I was given information with editorial proof that he was killed as a result of being struck by a train in Verona, PA on March 4, 1886. The newspaper article I was provided did not have the actual printed date on it, just someone's handwritten date: March 5, 1886. The article states the accident occurred the previous day. Someone also sent me their gen file for this family and therein is a note stating he was buried on March 6, 1886 in Rimersberg Cemetery, Clarion County, PA. He was first married to Hattie Mayhew/Mahugh and in the 1860 Census in Clarion Co, PA, he is listed with Hattie and the first eight of their nine children. The last one was born in 1861. Hattie died in 1866 and John married Emma Platt in 1867 who gave birth to his tenth child, Emma McGee in 1868. Emily was either married to a Crick previously or at least had a child named Mary Crick born 1860. In the 1870 Census I find John and Emily still in Clarion Co, with two of John and Hattie's children, plus Mary Crick and Emma McGee. The confusion comes when reading the 1880 Census. Emily is the head of household, a widow and living with Mary Crick and Emma McGee. I could not find John L. McGee or even John McGee in the 1880 Census. Emily was still living in Clarion County. If John died in 1886, where was he in 1880 and why is Emily listed as a widow and head of household? Does anyone know??? It has occurred to me that a sloppily written 0 could be mistaken for a 6 and perhaps he died in March 1880 before the Census was taken that year. Another question: Can anyone verify who Emma McGee married? I was told her half-sister Lizzy McGee married Charles Augustus Wassum, but according to the Census 1900 - 1930, his wife was Emma, so I am thinking he married the younger daughter or perhaps married Lizzy and she died soon after and then he married Emma. Thanks for any input on this! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
