"Gene" Ziegler Jr., 29 Manning St., Oil City Carl E. Beers, 82, of Englewood, Ohio, formerly of Shippenville, died Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Grandview Hospital in Ohio. Born Sept. 9, 1926, in Shippenville, he was the son of Arthur L. and Edith F. Armstrong Beers. Mr. Beers attended a one-room school for grades one through eight. He graduated in 1944 from Clarion High School, in 1953 from Penn State with a bachelor's degree and in 1963 from Penn State with a master's degree. He taught school in western Pennsylvania for seven years and retired from the Dayton, Ohio, board of education as an administrator after 28 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Dayton, where he served as director of project blessing. In 1996 he received the J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award in recognition of his extensive volunteer service. Mr. Beers was also a member of the American Legion and a former member of the Ohio Social Studies Teachers Council, Dayton Math Teachers Council and S.W. Ohio Instructional TV Association. He is survived by two sons, Gregory Paul Beers and Eric John Beers; one daughter, Sue Ellen Beers; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Vivian Beers Aaron. In addition to his wife of 44 years, Ann Lee Beers, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Arthur Beers; and two sisters, Beulah Beers Best and Betty Beers Hagley. Foster Leroy Buck, 64, of 304½ Central Ave., Oil City, died at 8:55 p.m. Sunday, March 8, 2009, at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh. Born Aug. 25, 1944, in New Bethlehem, he was a son of Blain and Ruby Yount Buck. Mr. Buck was a Vietnam War veteran, serving in the U.S. Army from 1965-1967. He worked at Foster Forbes Glass. Mr. Buck enjoyed fishing and doing small engine repair. He is survived by three sons, John, Jamey and Jerry Buck, all of Oil City; three grandchildren, Brittany, Randy and Mikey Buck; one great-granddaughter, Hailey Hepler; one brother, Blain Buck and his wife, Sue; one sister, Dorothy Gourley; and his girlfriend, Linda Witton. Buzard, 84, of 174 Baker St., Rimersburg, died Wednesday afternoon, March 11, 2009, in Clarion Hospital. Gladys Pearl Crawford, 91, of Liberty Towers, Liberty Street, Clarion, passed away at 2:08 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Clarion Hospital. Born April 22, 1917, in Brookville, she was the daughter of Arther E. Horton Sr. and Orpha Mable Gathers Horton. She was married July 2, 1935, to Harold W. Crawford, who preceded her in death July 7, 1973. In her early years, she and her husband owned and operated Crawford's Store in Day City. Mrs. Crawford was a beautician and a homemaker. She was a member of Liberty Street Church of God in Clarion. She enjoyed R.V.ing and traveling. She was an avid reader, and she also enjoyed spending time at her church and with her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Crawford is survived by two sons, William E. Crawford and his wife, Donna, of Transfer, and Robert A. Crawford and his wife, Linda, of Sun City West, Ariz.; one daughter, Dorothy Ann McCall and her husband, Donald, of Sligo; one sister, Frances Ruth Horton Esbaugh of Brookville; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Joann Crawford; one son, Larry Jack Crawford; two brothers, Arther E. Horton Jr. and Robert A. Huffman, 81, of Huckleberry Ridge Road, Knox, a Korean war veteran, passed from this life to the next at noon Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at his home. Born Jan. 16, 1928, in South Bethlehem, Armstrong County, he was the son of Dallas C. "Sawdust" Huffman Sr. and Essie Brocious Huffman. He had been self-employed at Huffman Lumber. He was an active member of the Church of the Nazarene in Clarion, where he had been a trustee and sang in the choir. Mr. Huffman also was a member of the North American Hunting Club and the Handyman Club of America. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean war. Bob loved to hunt, fish, play the steel guitar, collect trains and spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren. On Sept. 3, 1977, he married the former Gladys Bessler, and she survives. In addition to his wife, Mr. Huffman is survived by four stepchildren, Donna Carson of Seattle, Wash., DeAnna Moore and her husband, David, of Grove City, David Carson and his wife, Frances, of Oil City and Daniel Carson and his companion, Michael Mankenburg, of Glendale, Ariz.; six grandchildren, David Carson II and his wife, Stacey, DeAnna Laser and her husband, Matthew, Ember Kestner and her husband, Keith, and Annette Carson, Corey Carson and Eric Brinn and his wife, Gretchen; and nine great-grandchildren. Kerr, 74, of 301 Turkey Farm Road, Titusville, died at 3 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Select Specialty Hospital in Erie. Mr. Kerr was born Aug. 8, 1934, in Titusville to the late Howard Kerr and Retha Kerr Dymond. He was a 1953 graduate of Titusville High School. Mr. Kerr served in the U.S. Air Force from Aug. 9, 1951, to Aug. 8, 1955, when he was honorably discharged. He was employed by the City of Titusville as a police officer for more than 20 years. He had been the chief of police for eight years at the time of his retirement. Mr. Kerr most recently attended First Presbyterian Church in Titusville. He was a 33rd Degree Mason and a member of Titusville Lodge 754, F&A.M, the Oil City Lodge of Perfection and the New Castle Consistory. He also belonged to Bruce Shorts VFW Post 5958. Mr. Kerr was a pilot for the past 15 years and a member of the Titusville Aero Club. Mr. Kerr loved being with his family surrounded by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed keeping busy working around the house. He is survived by his second wife, Virginia Anderson Kerr, who he married Dec. 30, 2006, at the Free Methodist Church in Titusville; his daughter, Deborah "Debbie" Myers and her husband, Terry, of Titusville; two stepsons, Scott Anderson and his wife, Leigh Ann, of Titusville, and Steven Anderson of Kaneville; and two grandsons, Rick Bickel III and his wife, Christine, of Titusville, and Kenneth Bickel of Hydetown. Also surviving are five step-grandchildren, Marie Beth Barscz of Utica, Jamie Myers Huff of Pittsburgh, and Kelly Anderson, Joseph Anderson and Benjamin Anderson, all of Titusville; three great-grandchildren, Alexander Kile Bickel, Nathan Patrick Bickel and Dade Aston Lucas; four step-great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Jared and Marah Barscz, and Andreas Myers Huff; one brother, Jake Dymond and his wife, Elaine, of Pittsburgh; and three sisters, Joyce Mitchell and Ruth Dymond, both of Pittsburgh, and Rose Marie Ball and her husband, Joseph Ball Jr., of California. Mr. Kerr was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Walters Kerr, who he married July 28, 1956, at Shelmadine Bethel Methodist Church. Mrs. Kerr died Oct. 5, 2005. Barbara Marie Kostek, 81, of 5 Diamond St., Rouseville, died at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at the Oil City Presbyterian Home, where she had been residing for the last two days. Born Aug. 30, 1927, in Oil City, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Anna R. Burke Olon. Mrs. Kostek attended both St. Joseph and St. Patrick schools. She was married Aug. 24, 1946, in St. Joseph Church by the Rev. Lynch to John E. Kostek. He preceded her in death on Aug. 17, 2000. Mrs. Kostek had worked at the Oil City Glass Plant for many years and was the owner and operator of the Kostek Yarn Shop in Rouseville. She was a member of St. Venantius Church in Rouseville and had served as a eucharistic minister. Barb was also a member of God's Delight Prayer Group. She enjoyed cooking, knitting and spending time with her family and grandchildren. She is survived by four sons, Joseph M. Kostek and his wife, Bonnie, of Oil City, James E. Kostek and his wife, Roberta, of Seneca, Thomas J. Kostek and his wife, Shirley, of Rouseville, and John E. Kostek Jr. and his wife, Joyce, of Erie; three daughters, Patricia E. Born March 3, 1927, in Newmansville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Homer B. and Eva Annice McMurtrie Whitton. She married Lee R. Lehman on Jan. 1, 1948, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 27, 2000. Evie and Lee were well traveled, many times abroad, and they loved to vacation together. She was a devoted wife and was Lee's loving caregiver in his last years. Evie loved to vegetable and flower garden. She so much enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as her pets. She was a devoted mother to her children. In recent years, she enjoyed and so much appreciated the VNA Adult Daily Living Center in Shippenville. She was a member of the Tionesta United Methodist Church. Mrs. Lehman is survived by a son, Sid Lehman and his wife, Louise, of Tionesta; a daughter, Judy R. Greyber and her husband, Kim, of Jamestown, N.Y.; nine grandchildren, Richard Reeher, Matthew Reeher, Jason Wallin, Jeffrey Greyber, Justin Reeher, Beth Phillips, Amanda Wentling, Laura Greyber, and Jennifer Wallin; and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Eva Carson and her husband, Jack, of Tionesta, and Ellen "Becky" Kotz and her husband, Vern, of Erie; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. "Gene" Ziegler Jr., 62, of 29 Manning St., Oil City, passed away at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, 2009, surrounded by his family and following an extended battle with cancer. Born Feb. 24, 1947, in Oil City, he was the son of the late Leroy E. Ziegler Sr. and Genevieve McDonald Ziegler. Mr. Ziegler and the former Joyce Gibbons of New Brighton were married March 25, 1983, in Tionesta, and she survives. He attended Oil City schools. On disability due to ill health, Mr. Ziegler was last employed as a laborer by Strickland Construction Co. He was a Christian. His main enjoyment in life was tinkering with old cars. In addition to his wife, Mr. Ziegler is survived by four daughters, Jolene, Kimberly and Amber Ziegler, all of Oil City, and Jennifer Ziegler of Texas; two sons, Jeffrey Ziegler of Oil City and Michael Ziegler of Phoenix, Ariz.; and one grandson, Gilbert Dahlstrom I of Oil City. Also surviving are one brother, Ronald Ziegler and his wife, Roxanne, of Cooperstown; and six sisters, Mary England of Franklin and her companion, Bill Lewis, of Titusville, Jackie Goughler and her husband, Barry, of Rocky Grove, Donna Slatton and her husband, Dennis, of Zebulon, N.C., Lily Krizon and her husband, Larry, of Cooperstown, Brenda Pressley and her husband, Dan, of Quakertown and Vicki Jackson and her husband, Rick, of Titusville. He also is survived by two brothers-in-law, Larry E. Lepley and Bill England of Franklin, and by many loving nieces, nephews and extended family members.
