Drayer Grace Ellen Elliott, 13, of Knox, died Thursday evening, April 2, 2009, along with her grandmother, Esther Marie Matthews, in an automobile accident on Route 208 near Knox. Born Nov. 16, 1995, in Clarion, she was the daughter of Valarie Marie Matthews of Knox and Vincent David Elliott of Clarion. Miss Elliott was a seventh-grade student at Keystone High School and belonged to the Girl Scouts. She loved horses and her dog, "Buddy," and she enjoyed using the computer and playing with her niece and nephew. She is survived by her parents; her grandfather, William "Buck" Matthews of Knox; three brothers, Jonathon Elliott, David Elliott and Seth Seidle; four sisters, Amanda Elliott, Marie Matthews, Jasmine Elliott and Jada Zippman; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Walter J. "Jack" Lewis Sr., 83, formerly of Oil City, died Thursday, April 2, 2009, at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Jack served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 363 of Oil City, the Royal Arch Lodge of Summit County and Eastern Star Lodge 512. Mr. Lewis retired from Conrail after more than 40 years of service. He loved woodworking and doing anything outdoors. Rodney H. Ludwig, 81, of Seymour, Ind., a former Oil City resident, died Thursday, April 2, 2009, in Indiana. Mr. Ludwig was an Oil City High School graduate. Esther Marie Matthews, 73, of Knox, died Thursday evening, April 2, 2009, along with her granddaughter, Grace Ellen Elliott, in an automobile accident on Route 208 near Knox. Born Aug. 8, 1935, in Elk Township, Clarion County, she was a daughter of Frank and Hattie Baughman Beichner. She was married April 27, 1957, to William "Buck" Matthews, who survives. Mrs. Matthews had been employed by Owens-Illinois and most recently at Beverly Healthcare of Shippenville. She was of the Christian faith. Her memberships include the Rod and Gun Club in Knox, The Serviceman's Club of Knox, Fryburg Sportsman's Club and the Clarion Moose Lodge. She was an avid bingo player. Born April 22, 1930, in Bradys Bend, he was the son of Earl Webster and Anna Elizabeth Wyant Shultz. Mr. Shultz was married Aug. 12, 1950, to the former Claire "Kate" Maxwell, who preceded him death Jan. 15, 2003. He served with the Army during the Korean War. Mr. Shultz retired as foreman of the sheet metal department of Conair in Franklin after 22 years. He was the owner of Shultz Sheet Metal Shop in Miola. He enjoyed his cats and dogs, farming and raising beef cattle and horses. Mr. Shultz was a member of the Fryburg Sportsman's Club. He is survived by a son, Donald Shultz and his wife, Carol; a daughter, Kristin Ann Shultz; and his companion of six years, Elinor Robinson, all of Miola. Ray John Switzer, 83, of Leslie Road, Meadville, a Clarion County native who became a pilot during World War II, died Thursday, April 2, 2009, in Hamot Medical Center of Erie. Born April 5, 1925, in Knox, he was a son of Raymond R. and Margaret Berlin Switzer. Mr. Switzer married his high school sweetheart, June Shaner, in 1947, and she survives. He was a 1943 graduate and president of his class at White Memorial High School in Knox. Following graduation, he entered military service and served with the 8th Air Force, 25th Bomb Group, 652nd Bomb Squadron as a B-17 pilot during World War II. He was stationed in England and flew missions over Europe and North Africa, receiving several commendations for his service, including the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European/African/Middle East Medal with three Bronze Stars, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Bar, U.S. Army Service Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Honorable Discharge Pin and Combat Service Medal. After the war, he received his bachelor of science degree in education from Clarion State Teachers College in 1951. He continued his education at Penn State University from 1953 to 1954, Allegheny College of Meadville from 1963 to 1965 and Bridgewater State College of Massachusetts in 1967, achievening BAS Advanced Honors through the National Science Foundation in 1963, 1964 and 1967. Mr. Switzer began his teaching career in St. Petersburg from 1951 to 1952 and then moved to the Brookville Area School District in Sigel from 1952 to 1957. He taught at Maple Heights High School in Ohio from 1959 to 1960. Mr. Switzer retired in 1983 from Cambridge Springs High School, where he taught science, starting in 1961. He also served as an assistant principal. He was a member of the National Education Association, Pennsylvania State Education Association and Trinity Lutheran Church, where he was also a member of the church council. Mr. Switzer was the first president of the Meadville Pilots Association and was president of Aviation Explorer Post 205. His love of flying and his strong faith were reflected in his favorite poem, "High Flight" by John Gillespie Magee Jr., and his favorite Bible passage, Isaiah 40:6-8. In his retirement, Mr. Switzer enjoyed traveling to spend time with his children, grandchildren, family and friends. He also enjoyed family genealogical research, Civil War history, golfing and reading, and he was an avid sports fan. Ray is survived by June, his loving wife of 62 years; a son, Richard W. Switzer and his wife, Erin, of Vancouver, B.C.; a daughter, Michelle Eppinga and her husband, Scott, of Lexington, N.C.; and five grandchildren, Bill Switzer, Mackenzie Switzer and Taylor Switzer, all of Vancouver, B.C., Matthew Cheely and his wife, Christie Sue, of Raleigh, N.C., and Adam Cheely and his wife, Erin, of Durham, N.C. He is also survived by three sisters, Doris Snively of Florissant, Colo., Virginia Hook and her husband, Ron, of Knox, and Margaret "Peg" Fiscus and her husband, Fred, of Knox; two brothers, Larry Switzer and his wife, Virginia, of Knox, and Dr. Gary Switzer and his wife, Janet, of Franklin; two sisters-in-law, Luci Wolf and her husband, Lloyd, of Pacific Palisades, Calif., and Nancy Fink and her husband, Paul, of Carpinteria, Calif.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Urey Sr., 76, of 407 7th St., Franklin, died at 12:30 a.m. Friday, April 3, 2009, at St. Vincent Medical Center, Erie. Born Dec. 5, 1932, in Franklin, he was a son of James F. and Stacia Hazlett Urey. He was married June 26, 1954, to the former Shirley Foster, who survives. Mr. Urey attended Rockland High School He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal 2BS, United Nations Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. Mr. Urey was a truck driver for more than 30 years, most recently driving for Mushroom Transportation. Mr. Urey enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, particularly watching their sporting events. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, gambling and woodworking. In addition to his wife, Mr. Urey is survived by a son, Lyle G. Urey Jr. and his wife, Anita, of Van; a daughter, Debra L. Hesson and her husband, James, of Polk; and four grandchildren, Kevin Hesson and Kelley Hesson, both of Polk, and Alyssa Urey and Dakota Urey, both of Van. He is also survived by a sister, Maxine Sires of Franklin; and two brothers, James Urey of Titusville and Frank Urey of El Paso, Texas. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Gunner Montgomery; two brothers, Robert Urey and William Urey; and two sisters, Jennie Rodgers and Zeldean Foster.
