On Saturday evening last, Dec. 4, 1897, James White of South Bethlehem, was called to the great beyond. The summons came unannounced, and carried him off before friends could be summoned or a physician called. He had been attending to his duties as usual on Saturday, Dec. 4, and retired at about eight o'clock. In a very short time he complained of a severe pain in the arm, and arose and went down into the kitchen, accompanied by Mrs. White, who bathed his arm with liniment. He soon said the pain was leaving and they both again retired to their room, but the pain getting worse, they returned to the kitchen, where he died in his chair a few minutes later while his wife was bathing his arm. His last words were, "I am getting worse," when he dropped over against his wife, a corpse. The physician called in pronounced death from apoplexy. Mr. White was born in Porter township, Clarion county, on October 16th, 1827, and was consequently 70 years, 2 month and 18 days old. His first wife, whose maiden name was Matilda Smith, died in 1865. By his first wife he had six children. Margaret, now Mrs. Scott Riggs, resides at Richardsville; Robert M. lives near this place; Nancy Jane, now Mrs. Buzard, lives at Chicago Junction, O.; Joseph M. lives at Osage, Kan.; Mary, now Mrs. Howard Henry, lives at Leatherwood; Matilda, now Mrs. Ezra Polliard, lives near Squirrel Hill. To his second wife, who is left to mourn his loss, he had two children, Lizzie, now Mrs. Daniel Beck, of Dayton, Pa., and Addison, who lives on the old farm near this place. Mr. White was a consistent member of the Presbyterian church for many years, formerly a member of the Leatherwood organization, but for the past twelve years a member of the New Bethlehem organization. His funeral took place on the 8th inst, the services being held in the Presbyterian church at Leatherwood, Rev. J. C. Dible conducting the services. A large number of people viewed the remains as they lay in a costly casket at his home in South Bethlehem. Chas. W. Kah had charge of the remains. The deceased was a well-to-do, honest and respected citizen. By incessant toil and frugality as a farmer and lumberman, he amassed considerable property, a part of which he has very liberally distributed among his children, giving each daughter $2,000 in cash and each son a good farm. His industrious and frugal life gives a lesson well worth contemplation. As a neighbor he was kind, obliging and ever ready to extend a helping hand.
