Washington St., Titusville, formerly of Franklin Getting it right - Virginia L. Kline Samuel J. Bavely Sr., 64, of Penn Street, Sligo, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009, at Clarion Hospital following an extended illness. Born July 14, 1944, in Fairmont, W.Va., he was the son of the late Alexander S. and Isabelle Gerard Bavely. Mr. Bavely was a graduate of West Fairmont High School in West Virginia and a graduate of New Hampshire Business College. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. Mr. Bavely was a supervisor for Bell Atlantic in Hampton, Va., when he retired in 1996. Shortly thereafter, he started a charter fishing and tourism business. He was a member of the United Methodist Monroe Chapel Church in Sligo. Mr. Bavely enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also a certified lay minister for the UMC Redbank Valley Co-op Emmaus Group. Mr. Bavely is survived by two sons, Samuel J. Bavely Jr. and his wife, Cheryl, of Pittsburgh, and Paul G. Bavely and his wife, Meghan, of Westbrook, Conn.; a daughter, Elizabeth Bavely of Claremont, N.H.; a brother, Sandy F. Bavely and his wife, Shirley, of Cleveland, Ohio; a sister, Joanel M. Bauer and her husband, Kenneth, of Milton, W.Va.; and three grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bavely was preceded in death by a brother, Richard A. Bavely. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 7, at First United Methodist Church, Penn Street, New Bethlehem. Bogert, 70, of Franklin, died peacefully Friday morning, Feb. 13, 2009, in her home. Born June 11, 1938, in Oil City, she was a daughter of the late Elwood and Loretta VanAusdall Fry. She graduated from Franklin High School in 1956 and attended Clarion University in Oil City. She was married June 21, 1980, to William Bogert, who survives. Mrs. Bogert was employed at McCroy's 5 & 10, in the office of Amalie Refinery, in the office of AC Laing Contracting and last as executive secretary at Venango Video. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Franklin and the AARP. She organized the local Association for Children with Learning Disabilities. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Bogert is survived by a daughter, Tammi Ruditis and her husband, Terry, of Franklin; a son, Arthur Ray Montgomery Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Franklin; six grandchildren, Tonya Montgomery of North Carolina, Allen Montgomery of Franklin, Ryan Ruditis of Franklin, Jessica Kerr and her husband, Shawn, of Franklin, Nathan Ruditis of Franklin and Chas Wentworth of Grove City; five great-grandsons; a sister-in-law, Joanne Phillips of Franklin; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bogert was preceded in death by a grandson, Anthony Montgomery; and a brother, James Phillips. Gould, 95, of New Bethlehem (Putneyville), died Friday evening, Feb. 13, 2009, at McKinley Health Center in Brookville. A complete obituary will be published Monday in The Derrick. Edward Pearson McDowell of Orchard Park, N.Y., a native of Franklin, died Feb. 5. He was a 1954 Franklin High School graduate, earned a civil engineering degree from Penn State and was an IBM systems engineer for 35 years. Survivors in addition to his wife Mary Louise and two children include siblings Dick McDowell, Marilyn McGuckin and Peggy Dabrowski, all Franklin natives. Memorials may be made to St. John Episcopal Church, Franklin. Mendell William Richar, 93, of Galeton and Conrad, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009. Born Sept. 2, 1915, in Galeton, he was the son of the late William and Minnie Meachum Richar. He was married May 9, 1936, in Buffalo, N.Y., to the former Virginia Lyman, who preceded him in death in 2003. Mr. Richar was a member of Pine Creek Valley United Methodist Church in Gaines. He is survived by a son, Kenneth Richar and his wife, Kay, of Bucyrus, Mo.; two daughters, Donna Schroeder of Ashville, Ohio, and Sally Costello and her husband, Michael, of Downers Grove, Ill.; a daughter-in-law, Norma Richar of Oil City; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Donald Lyman of Tonawanda, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife of more than 66 years, Mr. Richar was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Haller; a son, William C. Richar; and a granddaughter, three brothers and one sister. Roscoe Larsen Speer, 78, of 683 Speer Road, Cooperstown, passed away at 7:40 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at UPMC Northwest in Seneca following a lengthy illness. Born July 20, 1930, in Oakland Township, he was the son of the late Warren A. Speer and Marie C. Larsen. He was married Nov. 17, 1949, at the parsonage of Dempseytown Evangelical United Brethren Church by the Rev. P.L. Griffin to the former Anna Mae Pritchard, who survives. The couple celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary last fall. He was a 1948 graduate of Oil City High School. Mr. Speer retired from Joy Manufacturing in 1992 after more than 36 years as a machinist. He was also part-owner of Speer Bros. Store in Dempseytown with his brother, Bill, from 1950-1955. Mr. Speer was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church in Dempseytown where he served in various positions and sang in the church choir all his life. He enjoyed farming and hunting. Mr. Speer was a member of Rouseville Lodge 483, Valley of Oil City Lodge and the Scottish Rite of New Castle (32nd Degree). He was an Oakland Township supervisor for 42 years, president of the Venango County Township Supervisors Association for 11 years, a member of Oakland Volunteer Fire Department and a member of Oakland Grange. In addition to his wife, Mr. Speer is survived by three children, Glenn Speer and his wife, Joyce, of Franklin, Cindy Weber and her husband, Jack, of Franklin, and Margaret McAlevy and her husband, Ed, of Franklin; six grandchildren, Chris Weber and his wife, Terri, of Cooperstown, Jason Weber of Pittsburgh, Ashley Kerschner of Franklin, Colleen Speer of Franklin, Heather Speer of Franklin and Erick Speer of Franklin; and three great-grandchildren, Brianna Weber of Cooperstown, Logan Kerschner of Franklin and Ashlyn Tucker of Franklin. He is also survived by a sister, Ruth Martin of Erie; two sisters-in-law, Doris Speer and Mary Persign; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Speer was preceded in death by a brother, William J. Speer; twin sons, Warren and Orrin Speer; and a grandson, Joshua Speer. Washington St., Titusville, formerly of Franklin, died at 5:48 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009, shortly after her arrival in the emergency department of UPMC Northwest. Born Dec. 2, 1959, in Titusville, she was the daughter of Ann "Annie" and Alphonso Lauricia. Mrs. Varner worked for many years in the healthcare industry as a certified nurse's aide. She was employed for many years at the former Grandview Convalescent Center. She will always be remembered by family and friends as a kind and loving person with a big heart who enjoyed living life to its fullest. She enjoyed music, watching movies and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Varner is survived by three daughters, Jessica Aoun and her husband, Jad, of McGuire Air Force Base, N.J., Grace Varner and her special friend, Gary, of Erie, and Chelsi Varner of Franklin; one son, Jeremy Smith, of Franklin; one sister, Angela Proper and her husband, Marco, of Franklin; one brother, Tony Frantz and his wife, Alice, of Franklin; and eight grandchildren, Naseem, Gage, Isiah, Chase, Alexah, Evangeline, Ayla and Omni. She was preceded in death by her husband, Steven Varner; and a granddaughter, Cheyanne Lyn Colwell. In accordance with her wishes, public visitation will not be held. The Timothy E. Kline, 84, of 432 Wiley Ave., Franklin, died at 4:55 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at UPMC Northwest. Mrs. Kline is survived by a brother, Robert Cole and his wife, Marilyn, of Seneca. She was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Dorothy Shaw. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Rocky Grove Avenue Presbyterian Church.
