Viele, of Franklin Ellen Jane Allen, 82, of 128 Allen Lane, Franklin, died in her home at 5:44 a.m.Thursday, Dec., 25, 2008, after a brief illness. She loved Christmas and hosted a joyful Christmas celebration for her family on Dec. 20 this year. Mrs. Allen was the daughter of the late Susen Edwards Pierce and Wade E. Pierce. She spent her early years in Knox and graduated from White Memorial High School and Westminster College. She taught commercial subjects in Knox before she married. On June 9, 1956, she married Edgar James Allen at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Knox at a service conducted by Pastor Lewis Fox. Mr. Allen, a longtime teacher and administrator in the Cranberry school system, preceded her in death on Jan. 4, 1996. Mrs. Allen maintained a beautiful home and loved to work in her flower gardens. She was an avid reader who loved to trade and discuss books with her friends and she read to her children and grandchildren from infancy. She was an active member of Good Hope Lutheran Church in Oil City where she enjoyed taking part in Bible studies, circle activities and preparing the annual community Thanksgiving dinner. She also belonged to the Venango County Historical Society. Mrs. Allen is survived by a daughter, Susen A. Rossino, M.D., and her husband Theodore M. Rossino, Jr. of Oil City, and a son, James Edgar Allen, M.D., and his wife Diane Allen of McMurray. She was a proud grandmother of Michael Allen, a student at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio, and Lindsay Allen, Jonathan Allen and Andrew Allen, all of McMurray. Also surviving are a brother, Donald A. Pierce and his wife Lois of Knox; a sister-in-law, Shirley Boorech of Knox; a brother-in-law, Robert C. Allen of Pittsburgh; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Pierce. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Morrison Funeral Home in Oil City and from noon to 1 p.m. Sunday at the Good Hope Lutheran Church in Oil City. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday in Good Hope Lutheran Church. Rev. Philip H. Scherr, pastor, will officiate. Interment will be in Knox Union Cemetery. Baughman, 90, of 203 Englewood Ave., Oil City, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, shortly after her arrival in the emergency department at UPMC Northwest in Seneca. Born Aug. 10, 1918, in Kennerdell, she was the beloved daughter of the late Clarence E. and Dora L. Rivers Mason. She attended and graduated from the former one-room Kennerdell school house. She was married to Arthur R. Baughman ,who preceded her in death on Jan. 11, 1972. Mrs. Baughman worked for many years as a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1981. She was a member and past president of the Venango County Penn Women's Association. Mrs. Baughman was an avid lover of the outdoors and enjoyed both hunting and fishing in her earlier years. She loved art and enjoyed painting when she could. She was very fond of traveling to Las Vegas, Nev., and Salamanca, N.Y., with family and friends to gamble whenever she could. Most especially, though, she cherished the quality time that she was able to share with her great-granddaughter, Hope. Mrs. Baughman had attended the First Presbyterian Church in Oil City. She is survived by her granddaughters, Holly L. Toy and Traci L. Winger, both of Oil City; her great-granddaughter, Hope Elizabeth Winger of Oil City; her brother, Clyde Mason and his wife Reenie of Kennerdell; three sisters, Elsie Keeler of San Diego, Calif., Patricia Paich and her husband Paul of Kennerdell and Lavina Sines of Kennerdell; many loving nieces and nephews and other extended family members. Preceding her in death in addition to her husband and parents were a daughter, Barbara Elizabeth Baughman Toy; a son-in-law, Herbert R. Toy; and her brothers and sisters, Clarence Mason, Jesse Ecker, Sarah Thomas, Paul Mason, Elmer Mason and Rose Midage. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no public visitation. Private interment in Rockland Cemetery will be conducted at the convenience of the family. Magee Culbertson, 91, an Erie resident since 1946 and formerly of Maiden Lane and the Tanglewood Apartments, died Monday morning, Dec. 22, 2008, in her residence at Independence Court, following a lengthy illness. Born Aug. 7, 1917, in Sligo, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Lilly Lerch Magee. Mrs. Culbertson was a member for more than 50 years of the First United Methodist Church and also attended Trinity United Methodist Church of Erie. She also was a member of the Mercy Center on Aging, the Salvation Army Senior Citizens Center and Gridley-Betsy Ross Chapter 324 of the Order of Eastern Star, all of Erie. Mrs. Culbertson was an avid walker and bowler. Survivors include two sons, Gary Culbertson and his wife Cheryl of Apple Valley, Calif., and Richard Culbertson of Erie; a sister in law, Mary Magee of Erie; 3 grandchildren, a step grandson, 2 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, William L. Culbertson, on died April 28, 1996; a sister, Bernice Kirsch, who died in 1995; and a brother,Wayne Magee. George, 80, of Deanville, Armstrong County, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, at her residence, following an illness. Born Dec. 19, 1928 in Putneyville, she was a daughter of the Smitty Schreckengost and Dessie Crissman. She married Darl L. George, who survives. Mrs. George was a homemaker and was of the Protestant faith. In addition to her husband, she is survived by four sons, Tommy of Michigan, William of Pittsburgh, Richard of New Bethlehem and Ed, also of New Bethlehem; a daughter, Janet of Maryland; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Anna Oaks of Ohio. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda, and two granddaughters. There will be no public visitation. Grieff, 85, of 444 Halyday Road., Oil City, died at 4:40 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, at UPMC-Northwest in Seneca after an extended illness. Born Sept. 7, 1923 in Emlenton, he was the son of Lawrence S. Grieff and Blanche A. Barnes Grieff Mr. Grieff attended schools in Emlenton. A veteran of the United States Army Air Corp., he served as a sergeant in World War II. He worked as a design engineer for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, retiring in 1985. Mr. Grieff enjoyed woodworking, fishing and painting. He was a member of St. Stephen Church. Mr. Grieff was married April 3, 1948, in St. Michael Church of Emlenton to the former Kathleen Dunkle, who survives. In addition to his wife, Mr. Grieff is survived by three sons, John Grieff and his wife, Anna, of Oil City, Thomas Grieff and his wife, Kim, of Pinehurst, Texas, and Mark Grieff of Oil City; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth Nuhfer of Warren, Mary Russell of Oil City and Louise Colwell of Knox; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Grieff was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Grieff; three brothers, Joseph Grieff, Robert Grieff and Fred Grieff; and two sisters, Helen Grieff and Elizabeth Edwards. Groom, 64, of St. Petersburg, Clarion County, passed away peacefully at 9:20 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, at UPMC Northwest in Seneca, following a courageous five-year battle with kidney cancer. Born March 23, 1944, in Grove City, Mr. Groom was the son of Kenneth E. and Gladys Stowe Groom. He and the former Linda Altman were married Oct. 8, 1966, at St. Petersburg United Methodist Church, and she survives. He was a 1962 graduate of Moniteau High School. Mr. Groom began working for American Hardware, later Servistar, in August 1962. He was employed in the warehouse at East Butler for 36 years before retiring in October 1998. Mr. Groom was employed by the A-C Valley School District as a custodian from 2003 until July 2008. He greatly enjoyed working at the school and being involved with the students, teachers and fellow workers. Mr. Groom was of the Protestant faith. He was a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard for 11 years. He was an active member of the St. Petersburg Fire Co. and participated in the annual Fireman's Picnic. He had belonged to the American Legion Post in Foxburg, the Blue Devils Marching Unit and the St. Petersburg Sportsman's Club. While his daughters were in A-C Valley marching band, Mr. Groom transported the band uniforms in the back of his truck to all band functions from 1986 to 1992. He also faithfully attended all of his daughters' sporting events in volleyball, basketball and track. Mr. Groom's hobbies included hunting, fishing, small engines and engine shows; antiquing and flea markets; taking drives with his wife and trying different restaurants; cooking and grilling; gardening, photography, and motorcycles. His greatest love was for the members of his family. He enjoyed spending lots of time with them and was especially proud of his grandchildren, to whom he was "Pop-Pop." In addition to his wife, Mr. Groom is survived by two daughters, Karen Meals and her husband, Michael, of Foxburg and Dalene Bickel and her husband, Thomas, of Hampstead, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Andrea Meals and Skylar and Landry Bickel. Also surviving are a sister, Rita Patchin of Butler; a brother, Bruce Groom of North Washington; and several nephews, aunts, cousins and an uncle. In addition to his parents, Mr. Groom was preceded in death by an infant son, Kevin Dale, and a sister, Gloria Roberts. Mr. Groom was a very strong and quiet man who never asked for much and didn't complain. During his long illness, he remained upbeat and positive. He was always willing to help out and give encouragement. He was adored by his family and was loved and liked by so many. He will be truly missed. She was born Sept. 9, 1930, in Clarion County, a daughter of Earl and Christine Uhl Fleming, and she graduated from Franklin High School in 1947. Mrs. Heffernan worked several years in the office at CPT, and after its closing she worked at the Venango County Veterans Affairs Office. She enjoyed bowling and golfing and was in women's leagues for those sports for many years. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was happiest when in the presence of her family. She will be remembered by her family for her unconditional love and words of encouragement. Most importantly she taught them to always be honest and to give to others your time or money, no matter the size of the contribution because they all make a difference. Her greatest joy in the last eight years were her great-grandchildren. She strongly believed that you spoil a child with love and attention. She was first married to Chester Dale Heffernan on July 2, 1949, and he died on Feb. 17, 1983. She then married Darrell D. Heffernan on May 9, 1987, and he survives along with two daughters, Terri Lynn Reagle of Franklin and Susan Burger and her husband, Braden, of Cooperstown; a son Chris Heffernan and his wife, Miya, of Oil City; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, Elliott D. Reagle and his children, Kandyn Reagle and Kilia Harris; Jodie Lepley and her husband, Sam, and their children, Savahanna, Raychel and Lukas, Cooperstown; Craig Trinch and his wife, Jamie, and their children, Dakota and Emma, Franklin; Alisha Stevens and her husband, Freddie, and their daughter, Sydney, Franklin; Nicole Mawhinney and her husband, Ben, and their daughter, Elizabeth Grace, Cooperstown; Lisa Shode and her husband, Donnie, and their children, Jaydon, Ayva and Alexys, Franklin; and two sisters Louise Wolfkiel of Franklin and Virginia Graner and her husband, Ron, of Akron, Ohio. Mona D. Clemens Henry, 76, of New Bethlehem died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, at the Clarion Hospital. Born July 20, 1932 in Distant, she was the daughter of Ernst Clemens and Mary Michaline Clemens. She was married May 2, 1953, in Distant to Joseph A. Henry Sr., who survives. Mrs. Henry was a homemaker. She attended Distant schools and was a member of the Oakland Church of God. She was very active within her church, where she was a member of the Women of the Church of God. Mrs. Henry enjoyed going to flea markets as well as baking and cooking. She was also a member of the American Legion. But her greatest love was her family and friends. Especially caring for her grandchildren on their family farm. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Henry is survived by a son, Joseph A. Henry Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of New Bethlehem; two daughters, Diane Henry of New Bethlehem, and Tammi Starcher and her husband, Harold, of New Bethlehem; two sisters, Millie Dawson of New Bethlehem and Louise Snyder of Brookville; five grandchildren, Doug Henry and his wife, Kim; Nathan Henry; Katelyn and Claire Henry; and Tessa Starcher; a great-grandchild, Addison Henry; an aunt, Levia Cramer; a sister-in-law, Carol Clemens; and many nieces and nephews. Hunkele, 90, of Oil City died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 200,8 at the home of her daughter in Wexford. Born Aug. 22, 1918, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Ignatius and Bridget Rumbauskus. She was a graduate of Allegheny High School. Mrs. Hunkele was married on Oct. 30, 1944 to William J. Hunkele, who preceded her in death on June 18, 1982. The couple moved to Oil City in 1955. Mrs. Hunkele volunteered for many years as a cashier at the Oil City Hospital Snack Bar, as a driver for Meals on Wheels and as a secretary for St. Stephen School and more recently at the Transit Fine Arts Gallery. She was on the board of directors of the Women's Auxiliary at the Oil City Hospital, the Belles Lettres Club and the Oil City Library Commission. She was also a member of the Belles Lettres Club and had held the office of president. She was a member of St. Stephen Church and the Rosary Society. Mrs. Hunkele is survived by a daughter, Denise Sullivan and her husband, Mark, of Wexford; two grandsons, Andrew and Nicholas Sullivan; and four nephews and their families, Richard Moss of Shillington, Daniel Moss of St. Petersburg, Fla., Stephen Gasper of Conneaut and Kenneth Gasper of Chambersburg. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Hunkele was preceded in death by two sisters, Blanche Moss and Constance Gasper. Born Oct. 6, 1924, in Oil City, she was a daughter of the late John and Anna Anderson Lindquist of Oil City. Mrs. Levi was a graduate of Oil City High School, class of 1942. She graduated from the Mercy School of Nursing in Pittsburgh in 1945 and worked as a nurse in Pittsburgh and Lewisburg, Pa., before returning to Oil City where she worked off and on as a nurse for many years. She was an active volunteer and member of various organizations in Oil City, including the Belle Letters Club, Garden Club and American Cancer Society. She was a past director of the Winifred Tonkin Guild and was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Oil City. In Myrtle Beach, Mrs. Levi was active in the Sons of Norway,was a past secretary of the Garden Club and was a member of the Friends of the Library. She was an avid golfer and belonged to Myrtlewood Country Club in South Carolina and was a former member of Wanango Country Club in Reno. She was an avid bridge player and loved to travel both here and abroad. She was married to Joseph Levi II for 62 years. Surviving in addition her husband are four children, Joseph C. Levi and his wife Mayumi of Tokyo, Japan, Daniel Levi and his wife Sara of San Luis Obispo, Calif., Jennifer McPherson and her husband Robert of Farmington Hills, Mich., and Janice Levi of Heidelberg, Germany. She also was a devoted grandmother to Mikki Levi, Adam McPherson and Caitlin McPherson. She is also survived by her sister Helen Fontaine of Newton Square, Pa., and was a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death in addition to her parents were her siblings Carl Lindquist, Walter Lindquist, Clifford Lindquist, Evelyn Bolton and Robert Lindquist. Edward F. Rogers Jr., 67, formerly of Ahrensville, died at 12:45 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, at UPMC Northwest in Seneca. Born Jan. 5, 1941, in Oil City, he was a son of the late Edward F. Rogers Sr. and Ellen Pearson Rogers. Mr. Rogers was a self-employed plumber and was a lifelong member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union. Surviving are a son, Edward F. Rogers III of Oil City; a daughter, Mary Ann Eckert of Oil City; a brother-in-law, John Hahn of Virginia; and a special friend with whom he spent the last year of his life, Willa Jean McMunn of Rocky Grove. Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were two sisters, Barbara Jean Rogers and Betty Ann Hahn, and a son-in-law, Scott Eckert. There will be no visitation or services. Schermerhorn, 57, of 652 Old Route 8 in Harrisville, Irwin Township, Venango County, died at 3:10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, in his home, following a nine-month illness. He had lived at that location for the past 29 years. Born June 11, 1951, in Sussex, N.J., he was the son of Rev. Raymond W. and Esther Preston Schermerhorn. He was married July 8, 1972, to Grace C. Perry who survives. Mr. Schermerhorn was in the maintenance department for Plantation Park in Mercer and formerly was a machinist for 20 years at the former Cooper Energy Services in Grove City. He was a member of the Pleasantview United Methodist Church in Irwin Township. He graduated in 1969 from Kittanning High School. Mr. Schermerhorn was a self-taught banjo player and enjoyed singing and playing with the Mountain Railroad group. He was an avid hunter. Surviving in addition to his wife are two children, Jennifer R. Matassa and her husband Gregory and Andrew R. "Andy" Schermerhorn and his wife Abigail L., all of Harrisville; two grandchildren, Tanner and Gregory Schermerhorn; his parents, Rev. Raymond Schermerhorn and his wife Esther of Clintonville; two sisters, Ruth Wahl of Fredericksburg, Md., and Laura Madru of Eau Clair; a brother, Ron Schermerhorn and his wife Heather of Moon Township, Allegheny County. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Cunningham Funeral Home Inc. at 306 Bessemer Ave., Grove City. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the Pleasantview United Methodist Church, Old Route 8, Irwin Township. Rev. Ron Hankey will officiate. Interment will be in the Pleasantview Cemetery in Irwin Township. Nancy Louise Vail, 72, of Oil City, formerly of Tionesta, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at the Hamot Hospital in Erie. She was born April 21, 1936, in Tionesta, the daughter of the late John Jockey Kenneth and Ernestine Bowman Vail. Ms. Vail was employed 35 years with Penelec; retiring in 1991. She was a life long resident of Tionesta before moving to Oil City and was past president for 10 years for the Sarah Steward Bovard Memorial Library of Tionesta. Ms. Vail also was a past member of the Tionesta Borough Council. She lived life to the fullest and was a class act of herself. Ms. Vial was a beautiful artist. She loved painting dolls, woodworking and going to the casino. She also loved talking about her family and reminiscing about her life in Tionesta. Ms. Vail was also a dog lover and was very close to her Schnauzer "J.J." She enjoyed visits from her dearest friends including Janet Klinger, Hal Rogers and Mary O'Toole. Ms. Vail is survived by her most cherished friend and confidant, Patricia Foster; close friends, Holly Delp, Brenda Heckathorn, Jennifer Huff and Chris Berekaszi; and many cousins. Ms. Vail is the last surviving member of the Vail family. There will be no public visitation. All services held will be private. Burial at Mount Collins Cemetery in Tionesta. Richard M. Viele, 92, of 302 15th St., Franklin, died at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008, in Sugar Creek Station. Born August 10, 1916 in Franklin, he was the son of James Hunter and Sarah Ferringer Viele. Mr. Viele graduated from Franklin High School in 1936. He first worked at Anderson Furniture Company and after this he was well known as a salesman at Sears where he worked for 37 years; he retired from there in 1984. Mr. Viele was married June 10, 1940 to the former Barbara H. Brecht who survives. The couple was married for 68 years. Mr. Viele was very active in the Christ United Methodist Church where he served as an usher and was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class. He was a devoted father and grandfather. Mr. Viele enjoyed walks in the woods and traveling statewide and abroad. He also especially enjoyed big band music, through which he met several famous orchestra leaders. In addition to his wife, Mr. Viele is survived by four children, Linda Gibson of Puyallup, Wash.; Susie Andrews of Jackson, Fla.; Richard B. Viele of Franklin; and Debbie Cozad and her husband, Gary, of Franklin; nine grandchildren, Kristine Gibson of Virginia; Michael Gibson and his wife, Tricia, of Bothell, Wash.; Karen Herd and her husband, John, of Sammamish, Wash.: Lori Ibach and her husband, B.J. of Jacksonville, Fla.; Marc Andrews of San Francisco, Calif.; Jason Viele of Franklin; Stephanie Viele of Pittsburgh; Kelly Cozad of Franklin; and Jen Cozad of Bellefonte; six great-grandchildren, Emily Gibson and Ryan Gibson of Bothell, Wash.; Ashley Herd and Julianna Herd of Sammamish, Wash.; Hailey Ibach and Cameron Ibach of Jacksonville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Viele was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Huff Chapel, 312 W. Park Street, Franklin. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Christ United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Jenz, pastor, officiating. Interment will be made in the Franklin Cemetery. The family suggests that donations be made to Sugar Creek Station, 351 Causeway Dr., Franklin.
