Elva Crowley, 77, of Oil City, formerly of Butler, died at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at UPMC Northwest of Seneca, following an illness. Born Sept. 14, 1931, in Rimersburg, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Santa Catanzarita Mittiga. She graduated academically from Union High School in 1949. Mrs. Crowley was married June 30, 1951, to James A. Crowley, who survives. She was of the Roman Catholic faith and was a member of St. Stephen Church in Oil City. Mrs. Crowley was employed as a bottle packer by the Owens-Illinois Glass plant in Clarion for 22 years, before an early retirement due to permanent disability. She enjoyed flower gardening and playing bridge, and she was an accomplished baker. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Crowley is survived by a son, Steve Crowley and his wife, Deb, of Oil City; two grandchildren, Royd and Kara Crowley of Oil City; two sisters, Christine Connor of Rimersburg and Tona Silvis of Butler; a brother, Mike Mittiga of Harrisville; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Crowley was preceded in death by a son, Vince Crowley; two sisters, Betty Spatara and Mary Dunkle; and two brothers, Frank Mittiga and Albert Mittiga. There will be no public visitation or viewing. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church in Oil City. The Rev. In the time that he spent with us, McGee touched the lives of many, living life on his own terms, unfettered by convention. His wit and humor brought laughter and cheer, his generosity inspired us and his compassion calmed us. All who knew and loved McGee will feel his absence deeply and will be forever changed by having been a part of his life. He was the son of Susan L. Dorothy Mae Hartle, 92, of Paint Mills Road, Shippenville, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at her residence. Born Feb. 11, 1916, in Shippenville, she was a daughter of Christopher E. and Rosa Mae Best Schrum. She was married Nov. 21, 1935, to Cletus J. Hartle, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Hartle worked in the Clarion Hospital cafeteria before retiring in 1984. She enjoyed bus trips, word puzzles, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren and her dog Chi-Chi. Mrs. Hartle was the last surviving member of her immediate family and is survived by nine children, Catherine "Kate" Schmader, of Knox, Janice Beary and her husband, LeRoy, of Venus, Georgene Graham and Lou Torta, of Shippenville, Anita Wolbert and husband, Ted, of Franklin, Larry Hartle and his wife, Jean, of Leeper, Beverly Reinsel and Bruce McCool, of Clarion, Janie Schmader and Joe Bartuch, of Marble, Cyndi Hall and her husband, Calvin, of New Hampshire, and Ronald C. Hartle and his wife, Kim, of West Middlesex. Survivors also include 28 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; four sister-in-laws, Dorothy Schrum, of Oil City, Dixie Schrum, of Tionesta, Hida Crusan, of Shippenville, and Georgia Niederriter; and one brother-in-law, Donald Meier, of Conneaut, Ohio. She especially liked spending time with her family. On May 19, 1944, she married Benjamin Hartzell, who preceded her in death on May 28, 1993. Patricia Ann Allaman LaVan, 65, of Shippenville, passed from this life to be with her Lord and Savior on Dec. 24, 2008, while surrounded by her family. Born Feb. 11, 1943, in Oil City, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Marian Banner Allaman. She was a lifelong educator. Following graduation from Keystone High School and Clarion State College, she began teaching at Shippenville Elementary. After starting a family, she returned to her professional career with the Intermediate Unit 6 in Shippenville, followed by a job teaching at St. Michael's School in Fryburg, where she later became principal. Following completion of a reading specialist degree, she spend 17 years teaching reading to seventh graders at Keystone High School. She reluctantly retired in 2005. She was also the longtime Shippenville Borough tax collector. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Clarion. The most cherished times of her life were spend with her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved attending their sporting events and school activities. She also enjoyed the simple things in life with her grandchildren, like making and decorating sugar cookies, and stuffing the Thanksgiving turkey. She loved to cook for her family, and her family loved her to cook for them. She was passionate about her flowers, especially her pansies and geraniums. She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, canning, writing notes and sending cards to friends, and crossword, jigsaw and Sudoku puzzles. Mrs. LaVan was a member or past member of the Clarion County Tax Collectors Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Seneca Reading Council, the International Reading Council, the Shippenville Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, the Shippenville Civic Club, the Keystone Music Association, and was both a cub scout and brownie leader. Surviving are four children, Tim LaVan and his wife, Linda, of Shippenville, Lisa McQuiston and her husband, Brian, of Kossuth, Marianne Hustead and her husband, Dellas, of Pittsburgh, and Mike LaVan and his wife, Brenda, of Shippenville; a brother, William Allaman and his wife, Mary, of Shippenville; and a sister, Jane Yeany and her husband, Bill, of Mechanicsville. Survivors also include her six cherished grandchildren, Kelly, Kyle and Kari McQuiston, Lakynne and Brooks LaVan, and Jacob Hustead. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant brother, Robert Allaman; a brother, James Allaman; and a sister, Deborah Shaffer. "Bill" Polm, 80, of Eau Claire, passed away at 9:09 p.m. Wednesday evening, Dec. 24, 2008, at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Willard L. Warner, 86, of 421 Fairview Road, Titusville, died at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at St. Vincent Health Center in Erie. Born on July 27, 1922, in Titusville, he was the son of the late David and Lillian Strawbridge Warner. On Jan. 16, 1946 in Plummer, Mr. Warner married Bertha Leota Holden, who survives. Mr. Warner was a graduate of Titusville High School. He was employed at East Titusville Mills for 25 years, and at Valley Farm and Lawn and at Cyclops Specialty Steel Corp., where he worked as a roller in the cold mill before retiring in 1984. He was a lifetime member of the Breedtown Baptist Church. He served in many capacities including a deacon of the church, trustee and Sunday school teacher. Mr. Warner enjoyed the outdoors, working around his home, and hunting. He is survived by his wife; two children, Thomas Warner and his wife, Carmella, of Titusville, and Sandra Pelisari and her husband, Richard, of Fresno, Calif.; five grandchildren, Kurt Pelisari and his wife, Cheryl, of Monroeville, Krista Pelisari ,of New York City, Kent Pelisari, of Fresno, Calif., Tonia Sallaway and her husband, Andy, of Dover, and Andy Warner and his wife, Rita, of Frederick, Md.; one great-granddaughter, Amanda Pelisari; and numerous nieces and nephews.
