Woods, of Oil City Getting it right Marian F. Baughman James F. Ausel, 76, of 449 Coal City Road, Kennerdell, died at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at the Golden LivingCenter in Shippenville. Born March 23, 1930, in Oil City, he was a son of Davolt Ausel and Frances Curry. Mr. Ausel grew up in Oil City and was a 1949 graduate of Oil City High School. He was married Dec. 5, 1952, to Barbara B. Butts, who survives. Mr. Ausel was a U.S. Army and Korean War Era veteran. He worked for Joy Manufacturing as a machinist and retired in 1995 after 27 years of service. Mr. Ausel enjoyed landscaping, gardening, and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Heidi Bowen and husband, David, of Franklin and Vandy Shields and husband, Mike, of Franklin; four grandchildren, Jacob Bowen, Jaime Neal, James Ausel, and Moriah Bowen, all of Franklin; a great-grandchild, Zane Hopkins of Franklin; and two sisters, Evelyn Ausel and Betty Ausel, both of Iowa. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Ada Pyler, Virginia Talmadge, Morcene Holmes, and Edna Speck; three brothers, Harry Ausel, Frank Ausel, and Bob Ausel; a son, Daniel Ausel; a daughter, Barbara J. Ausel; a grandson, Matthew Neal; and a granddaughter, Jessica Garris. There will be no visitation and a service will be scheduled at the convenience of the family. Marvis D. "M.D." "Buster" Lindsey, 84, of River Avenue, Emlenton, died unexpectedly early Saturday morning, Dec. 27, 2008, shortly after his arrival to the emergency room in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Born June 5, 1924, in Virginia, he was the son of the late Mephe and Connie Tolbert Lindsey. He was married in 1986, in Emlenton, to the former Emma Jean Kriebel Rankin, who survives. Mr. Lindsey was a veteran of World War II, serving as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force. He owned and operated his own construction business, working mostly in western Pennsylvania. He later enjoyed remodeling many of his rental properties in the Emlenton area. He was an avid gun collector and enjoyed working and spending time outside. He was also a member of the VFW Post at Parker. Mr. Lindsey is survived by two daughters, Daphene Morgan of West Virginia and Patti Webb of Pittsburgh; two sisters, Ruby Lee Sparks of Arizona and Dorothy Strattis of Tennessee; a step-son, John Rankin of Emlenton; and a step-daughter, Karen Alworth of Parker. Also surviving are numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Lori Lindsey and Terri Ruane and three brothers, Jack, Roy, and Earl Lindsey. Ludlow, died peacefully at 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, in her home. Patricia H. "Nanny" Morrison, 90, of 216 North Main St., Seneca, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at UPMC Montefiore in Pittsburgh. Born Aug. 16, 1918, in Tidioute, she was a daughter of the late Charles L. and Edna Belle Osgood Hopkins. She was married Sept. 30, 1939, to Paul S. Morrison, who preceded her in death on Nov. 2, 1965. Mrs. Morrison was a graduate of Tidioute High School and Huff's Business School. She started her banking career at the Tidioute branch of Warren National Bank and later worked for 25 years at the Oil City National Bank, followed by Northwest Bank. After retiring July 31, 1983, she went to work for Baker's Confectionary. She worked there for many years. She was a member of the Seneca United Methodist Church. Mrs. Morrison was an avid bowler and card player and was a member of the Breakfast Club. Surviving are a son, Paul Kenneth Morrison and wife, Carol, of Canonsburg; two daughters, Teressa Anne Bailey and husband, Ronald, of North East, and Audrey Jeanne Ruhlman and husband, Dennis, of Seneca; nine grandchildren, Gayle Patrice Mitchell and husband, Lance, of Venus, Ronald John (Jack) Bailey of New York City, Kevin Paul Bailey and wife, Kim, of Mercer, Daniel Kenneth Morrison and wife, Beth, of Carmel, Ind., Kathryn Teressa (K.T.) McCann and husband, John, of Kalamazoo, Mich., Alan Paul Morrison and wife, Cinda, of Terre Haute Ind., Maria Denelle Ruhlman of Battlecreek, Mich., Kristin Elizabeth Haines and husband, Dave, of Oakdale and David Charles Hatfield and wife, Amanda, of Washington. Alice May Oakes, 72, of Beechwood Drive, Titusville, died at 7:17 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, in the Titusville Area Hospital, where she was admitted Dec. 16. Born March 18, 1936, in Titusville, she was a daughter of the late Mylo A. Robishaw and Gladys Silvis Robishaw. She was married Feb. 28, 1952, in Oil City, to Harry L. Oakes, who preceded her in death on Sept. 23, 1984. Mrs. Oakes was formerly employed by Horn Textiles for more than 14 years. She enjoyed playing bingo, working puzzles, word-search books and being with her family. She was a former member of Bruce Shorts Post #5958 VFW Auxiliary. She is survived by her partner of 10 years, Paul Hanna Sr. of Titusville; six children, Patricia Gifford and husband, Edward, of Neilltown, Nancy Cann and husband, Thomas, of Bear Lake, Betty Oakes and partner, Mike Shaffer, of Titusville, Jackie Richards and partner, Fred Murphy, of Grand Valley, Terry Oakes and wife, Kim, of Titusville and Randy Oakes and wife, Carrie, of Titusville; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a brother, John Robishaw and wife, Donna, of Pleasantville. Rankin Sr., 62, of 1149 Liberty St., Franklin, died at 12:10 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at The Caring Place in Franklin. Born Dec. 30, 1925, in Fairview Township, Butler County, he was a son of Orville H. Rankin and Edna A. Hartsell. He was married Nov. 18, 1961, to Elizabeth A. O'Brien, who preceded him in death on March 3, 2003. Mr. Rankin served in the U.S. Army from 1912 to 1917 and received a Presidential Citation in 1946, Philipine Liberation. He was employed as a machinist at Chicago Pneumatic Tool until he retired in 1988. Mr. Rankin was a member of the Myrtle Lodge No. 316 F&AM and enjoyed flying and the outdoors. He is survived by three children, Clair O. Rankin Jr. and wife, Sveta, of Franklin, Joseph Rankin of Franklin, and Tamara Warrington and husband, Tracy, of Cooperstown; three grandchildren, Michael Warrington, Tylor Warrington and Stacie Warrington, all of Cooperstown; a sister, Leila Hutchinson of Chicago; and a brother, Paul Rankin and wife, Naomi, of Altoona. Gardinier Funeral Home in Franklin. Petronilla "Pat" J. Russell, of the Caring Place, Franklin, formerly of 5405 Pittsburgh Road., Barkeyville, died 10:50 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008. Born May 12, 1918, in Garrido, Camaguey, Cuba, she was a daughter of Fridolin and Emma Beary Broschart, who were living in Cuba at the time. After returning to the U.S. in 1919, Mrs. Russell's parents settled in President Township., where she attended the Sage Run School. Later, her family moved to New Castle, where she attended Round Street School and St. Joseph School. She graduated from Union High School in 1935. Mrs. Russell also spent two years studying at Mount Alvernia Prep in Etna, near Pittsburgh. She later moved to Oil City to live with her sister, Mary B. Goodman, and worked for the Rev. and Mrs. Edward J. Kuhlman. Later, while working at the City Hotel, she met Albert G. Russell, and they married April 23, 1938, in St. Joseph Rectory in New Castle. Mr. Russell preceded her in death on March 7, 1985. She was a member of the Church of the Beloved Disciple in Grove City, where she participated in the craft group for many years, helping to make quilts for the church raffles. Mrs. Russell was an avid gardener and she and her husband raised and sold apples, pears, strawberries, corn, other vegetables, and Gladiolus bouquets. She was known for her delicious pies and other baked goods. She also served for many years on the Election Board in Barkeyville. She is survived by five children, Sylvia M. Coast of Pone Lane, Franklin, Albert E. and Jeanne King Russell of Anaheim, Calif., Ronald G. and Helen McCune Russell of Tucson, Ariz., Kenneth A. and Nancy Gayetty Baker Russell of Rocky Grove Avenue, Franklin and Dr. Bruce W. and Sue Dickert Russell of Weathervane Drive, Slippery Rock. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, Richard M. Coast, Julie C. Miller, Dr. Douglas A. Coast, Russell C. Coast, Darren L. Coast, Jennifer Coast-Doyle, Janice C. Newell, Garrick A. Russell, Tanya B. McFarland, Tara R. Etheridge, Sean K. Russell, Matteh M. Russell, Ryan J. Russell, Regan R. Mooney, Stephanie R. Kennedy and Cynthia R. Graham; two step-granchildren, Michael Baker and Greg Baker; 20 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; three step-great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Anna Marie Broschart and Helen B. Dorothy June Selleck, 78, of Clarion, went home to be eternally with her Lord on Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at the Visiting Nurses Association Hospice House in Shippenville after battling cancer for more than two years. Born Aug. 25, 1930, in Milwaukee, Wis., she was the daughter of immigrants Harry Mitchell and Minnie Itzkowitz. She was married July 4, 1950, to the Rev. David J. Selleck and worked alongside him to found Alpha Assembly of God Church in 1964, which they pastored in Clarion until their retirement in 2006. The two enjoyed 58 years of committed, loving marriage. Known for her outspoken faith in Jesus Christ, her musicianship, her hospitality and her community involvement, Mrs. Selleck devoted her life to people in need, both in Clarion and in former pastorates in Uniontown and Milesburg. She visited the sick, comforted the hurting, and tirelessly gave of her time and energy to reach people with the good news of Jesus, who was her best friend and protector since childhood. Because of her reputation as an outstanding pianist and vocalist, she judged the Annual Greek Sing at Clarion University and performed hymns and gospel songs at various events, including the annual Community Lenten Services and church conventions, and on the radio and television. She taught many piano students in her home and recorded a CD at 76. Mrs. Selleck was Clarion County's judge of elections for about 25 years. She served on the board of Children and Youth Services for many years, taught Sunday school and held various offices with the A/G District Women's Ministries. She is survived by her husband and four children, Deborah and husband, Rod Frampton, of Fisher, David and wife, Martha Selleck, of Sewickley, Stephen Selleck of Edina, Minn. and Melody and husband, James Quinn, of Marshfield, Mass. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Noelle, Isaac, Douglas, Dorothy and Rebekah Frampton, Jessica, Morgan, Lauren, Ian, Nicholas and Samantha Selleck, and Mitchell Quine; and a sister, Betty Mitchell Schultz, of Fort Myers, Fla. Mrs. Selleck was preceded in death by her youngest son, Mark Nathaniel Selleck and a brother, Nathan Mitchell. Beverly Spatharos, 85, formerly of Henry's Bend, went to be with her Lord on Christmas Eve, Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at the Presbyterian Home in Oil City. She had been ill for several years. Born July 5, 1923, in Oil City, she was a daughter of the late Aubrey and Mildred Washlon Lewis of Oil City, who owned Lewis Hardware. She was married to Nick Spatharos, who preceded her in death in March 2002. Mrs. Spatharos loved to spend the holidays with her children and grandchildren and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She was the last surviving member of the Lewis Family She is survived by four children, Debbie Spatharos and Sherry E. Everett, both of Erie, Vicki Guyton of Bristol, Conn. and R. David Reid of Oil City. Mrs. Spatharos is also survived by three grandchildren, Ashley Guyton of Erie, Shawn Muligan of Orlando, Fla., and Tyler Guyton of Little Rock, Ark. Helen Mae Stewart, 85, of Sugar Creek Rest, Worthington, formerly of Fairview, Butler County, passed away at 10:36 a.m. Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at Sugar Creek Rest, following an illness. Born July 10, 1923, in Conneration, Clarion County, she was a daughter of the late Russel Karnes and Maude Peters Karnes. She was married Oct. 27, 1949, in St. Petersburg, to Robert Glenn Stewart Sr., who preceded her in death on July 18, 2002. Mrs. Stewart was a homemaker and also affiliated with the Christian Missionary Alliance Church, Freeport Road, Butler. She is survived by a son, Robert Glenn Stewart Jr. and wife, Sheila, of Chicora; a foster daughter, Sandy Tarr Sybert and husband, Michael, of Chicora; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother, Joseph Fair of New Kensington; two sisters, Stella Buzard of Butler and Rose Cochran of Tarentum; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Joanne Mae Stalker on Dec. 9, 1975; a brother, Ronald Fair; and four sisters, Catherine Custer, Louella Kreibel, Martha Reed and 20 month old Mary Fair. Woods, 80, of 6 East Third St., Oil City, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2008 at 10:30 p.m., in his home. Born Aug. 16, 1928, in Lower Burrell, he was a son of the late Clifford and Mary Lobaugh Woods. He was married Aug. 5, 1976, to the former Jean Lang, who survives. Mr. Woods was a graduate of New Kensington High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He later worked in a machine shop in Titusville and farmed. He was an active member of St. Venantius Church in Rouseville. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Robert L. Woods of Willis, Texas and David Lang of Haines City, Fla.; three daughters, Kay Woods of Bradenton, Fla., Carol Zoflin of Tidioute and Diane Lang of Presto; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Genevieve Hartge of New Kensington; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Lori Lea O'Neil of Oil City.
