Born Sept. 3, 1918, in Polk, he was the son of the late Gertrude Jones and Fred R. Miller. Mr. Miller was employed by J&L Steel. He was a member of the Eagles Club, Northwest Medical Auxiliary, Riverview Senior Center and Sandy Lake Senior Center. He was a volunteer for VNA and Meals on Wheels. Mr. Miller enjoyed sitting on his front porch at 17 Front St. He was married June 26, 1941, to Ruth E. Baughman who preceded him in death. He is survived by a son, Fred E. Miller and his wife Nancy of Casper, Wyo.; a daughter, Margaret J. Hall and her husband Jack of Franklin; three grandchildren, Randall E. Hall of Bradford, Charles E. Taylor, 90, of 674 Grand St., Franklin, died at 9:23 p.m. July 30, 2004, at UPMC Northwest. Born Aug. 15, 1913, in Port Allegany, he was the son of Lucy Murphy and Fay Taylor. Second St., Oil City, died at 3:55 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at UPMC Northwest. Born Sept. 3, 1948, in Sharpsville, he was the son of the late Lena B. Phipps and William Leroy Voorhies. Mr. Voorhies lived in the Oil City area most of his life. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1969 during the Vietnam Conflict. He had worded as a grinder at Electralloy for 15 years. Mr. Voorhies enjoyed playing cards and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He was married Nov. 21, 1969, to the former Patricia A. Porter and she survives. Also surviving are a son, Richard B. Voorhies of Franklin; two brothers, James R. Voorhies of Erie and Donald E. Voorhies of Franklin; one grandson, Bailey R. Voorhies of Franklin; and numerous nieces and nephews. Derwood Heckler, 83, of 1036 State Route 427, Franklin, died at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at his residence. Born Feb. 20, 1921, in Brady's Bend, he was a son of Lewis and Ida McKinney Heckler. Mr. Heckler graduated from East Brady High School and Grove City College. He graduated as valedictorian from Pacific Coast University School of Law in Long Beach, Calif. A veteran of World War II, her served in the U.S. Navy and spent two years in the Pacific Theatre of Operations and was awarded eight battle stars. Mr. Heckler was employed by Armco Steel in California until he returned to Pennsylvania in 1965. He was then employed by Joy Manufacturing as an engineering administrator until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of the Cooperstown Presbyterian Church. He also served for many years as treasurer of the Cooperstown Volunteer Fire Co. and was a member of the Gideons and the Barbertones. He was married Aug. 22, 1948, to the former Helen Corinne Stewart, who survives. Also surviving are five children, Gerald Heckler of Chardon, Ohio, Harold Heckler and his wife, Pamela, of Erie, David Heckler and his wife, Christine, of Lake Wales, Fla., Melanie Brink and her husband, Thomas, of Franklin, and Elaine Frey and her husband, John, of Franklin. Beginning in 1961, he served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from Hanson Pipe and Products of Dallas, Texas. He was an active member of the DeSoto Band Boosters and enjoyed spending time with his family. Mr. Procious was married June 6, 1970, in Dallas, Texas, to the former Margret L. Langston, who survives. Rupert, 57, of Chicora, died late Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 3, 2004, at Butler Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. Born Sept. 2, 1946, in Brownsville, he was a son of the late Donald and Hallie Devers Rupert. He attended school in the former Fairview Township-Karns City School District. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1963 to 1965. A welder by occupation, he worked with the Boilermakers Union. He had also been employed by the former Pullman-Standard of Butler as both a welder and later, as foreman of the welding department. He was a member of the Park Hill Church of God of West Freedom. Mr. Rupert was a member of the NRA and had been a member and past president of the former East Brady Rod and Gun Club. In addition to his fondness for archery, hunting and fishing, he enjoyed traveling at every opportunity with his wife in their motor home. When he could no longer weld, do woodwork or enjoy the outdoors due to illness, he became quite interested in his wife's ability to quilt. He learned the various stitches and how to create patterns and became quite proficient at quilting right up to his last days. He was married March 18, 1967, to the former Nancy Woods, who survives. She was a member of the quilters and served as president of the women's Bible study. She enjoyed gardening, puzzles and time with her family. Mr. Brandon was a member of the Bruce Shorts VFW Post No. 5958 and Polish National Alliance Group No. 2031. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading and watching television. Donald Edward Irwin, 65, of 206 Pete Brittain Road, Morganton, N.C., formerly of Oil City, died at 6:59 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, after a short illness. Born Nov. 7, 1938, in Oil City, he was the son of the late Lee H. and Elizabeth Ann Bucholz Irwin. He was a 1957 graduate of Oil City High School. Mr. Irwin was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving as a boilermaker on the USS Steinaker. He formerly owned Don's Pennzoil on Main Street, Oil City. He then worked for Erie Home Improvement, J&L Steel and also as a mechanic instructor for Chrysler. He also had worked for Bartlett's Milling in Statesville, N.C., and was the head maintenance director of Valley Arms Apartments in Statesville. He retired in 2001 from DataTech Systems in Statesville. Mr. Irwin was a member of Mount Home Baptist Church in Morganton. He enjoyed helping others with their various projects, tinkering with small engines and machinery, plumbing and carpentry. Other interests were hunting and fishing and his loyal and faithful companions, Buddy and Cinnamon. Mr. Irwin first was married in Oil City in August 1962 to Helen Margaret "Peggy" Cornmesser, who died in 1973. On Aug. 6, 1974, he was married in Winchester, Va., to Karen Ruth Horn, who survives. Also surviving are eight children; Richard W. Irwin and wife, Rene, of Tionesta, Jeffrey L. Irwin of Mount Airy, N.C., Christy L. Starky, Gina M. Beckham and husband, Terry, Lee H. Irwin II and Jessie I. Nicholson and husband, Larry, all of Statesville, N.C., Timothy L. Irwin and wife, Christine, of Franklin and Melissa K. Wright and husband, Donald, of Morganton, N.C.; 16 grandchildren, Matthew, Ryan and Stephanie Irwin, Amanda, Mike and Beth Irwin, Eric, Joshua and Justin Waters, T.J., Tiffany-Christine and Amber Irwin, Alley and Emmie Wright, Ashley Irwin and Hunter Nicholson; and one great-grandson, Logan Scott Kightlinger. He also is survived by three sisters, Irene McQuown of Rochester, Alberta Lingo and husband, Anthony, of Oil City and Kathy Blandin and husband, Michael, of Franklin; two brothers, Lee Irwin and wife, Ann, of Oil City and Charles Irwin and wife, Janice, of Seneca; one brother-in-law, Jack Coogan of Franklin; one sister-in-law, Rosanne Irwin of Oil City; and several nieces, nephews and in-laws. In addition to his parents and first wife, Mr. Irwin was preceded in death by a grandson, Larry Dean Nicholson Jr.; one brother, Leroy Irwin; two sisters, Rosemary Coogan and Helen Hollingsworth; and two brothers-in-law, Charles McQuown and Donald Hollingsworth. Marshall, 82, of 4787 Georgetown Road, Franklin, died at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, in Sugar Creek Station, Franklin. Born Nov. 29, 1921, in Kittanning, he was the son of Mearl and Frances Henry Marshall. He was a graduate of Kittanning High School and took courses in drafting and engineering at Youngstown College. Mr. Marshall served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. From 1949 to 1985, he worked at Joy, advancing from draftsman, designer, senior designer to engineer. Mr. Marshall enjoyed modeling and designing miniature furniture and his dogs. He was married Feb. 4, 1941, to the former Mary "Kitty" Deitman, who survives. Also surviving are four sons, Larry Marshall and companion, Paula Rosenberry, and her daughter, Lauren Ann, of Franklin, Gary Marshall and wife, Leslie, of Oil City, Mark Marshall and wife, Beth, of Indiana and Dennis Marshall of Franklin; six grandchildren, Brian Marshall and wife, Wanda, of Venus, Amanda Hill and husband, Lt. Matt Hill, Julie Marshall and Elizabeth Marshall, all of Norfolk, Va., Dan Marshall of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Alex Marshall of Roanoke, Va.; and three great-grandchildren. Schimp McClelland, 82, of Shippenville, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at her home. Born Feb. 12, 1922, in Shippenville, she was the daughter of Earl and Ethel Ion Hartman. She spent most of her life in that area where she attended Shippenville School. Mrs. McClelland worked at Purinton Pottery and Laurel Boat Factory in Shippenville. She also worked for Watson Dry Cleaners in Clarion and Knox Glass in Knox. In 1972, she moved to Oil City where she worked at Brody's Clothing Store as a seamstress. After retiring from Brody's, she did seamstress work from her home. Mrs. McClelland also enjoyed crocheting, knitting, quilting and other crafts. She was of the Protestant faith. She first was married Sept. 2, 1940, to Jacob Schimp, who died April 7, 1981. On July 10, 1973, she married Robert McClelland, who died March 7, 1991. Surviving are a son, Donald Schimp and wife, Martha, and a daughter, Delene Furlong and husband, Ronald, all of Shippenville; five grandchildren, Mrs. Ralph (Traci) Montana of Marble, Mrs. Mike (Sherri) McCleary of Apollo, Gregory Furlong and wife, Cheryl, of Summerville, Mrs. Leonard (Trudy) Smith of Marble and Lance Schimp of Harrisburg; and five great-grandchildren, Luca and Lexan Montana, Morgan McCleary and Becca and Wyatt Smith. She also is survived by two brothers, Donald Hartman of Marble and Albert Hartman of Brookville; and one sister, Esther Reott of Knox. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice. Harry E. "Bud" Myers, 62, of 198 Crawford Ave., Polk, died at 3:10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at his residence. Born June 4, 1942, in Oil City, he was the son of the late Harry C. Myers and Betty Lockwood Myers Driscoll. He was a 1962 graduate of Oil City High School. Mr. Myers served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1965, stationed at Fort Devens, Mass. He worked at General Electric in Erie from 1965 to 1966 and then was employed as assistant manager at Weston's Auto Service Center in Reno. Since 1970, Mr. Myers was employed in the maintenance department at Joy Manufacturing, retiring Aug. 1, 2004. Mr. Myers was married Oct. 29, 1965, to the former Margaret Lewis, who survives. Also surviving is a daughter, Kimberly Ann Myers of Somerset. He also is survived by his stepfather, Robert A. Driscoll of Seneca; a brother, Larry G. Myers of Waunakee, Wis.; a nephew, Larry G. Myers Jr. of LaCrosse, Wis.; and several uncles, aunts and cousins in the Venango County area. Mr. Myers was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Claruth Irene Phillips, 61, of 10040 Route 322, Lot 75, Shippenville, died at 8:55 a.m. Sunday, Aug 8, 2004, in Beverly Healthcare-Shippenville. Born June 24, 1943, in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Ralph W. and Irene M. Simmons Wert. Mrs. Phillips was a 1961 graduate of Green Dreher High School, Newfoundland, Pa. She had been coordinator of Alumni Reunion of Class 1961 and organizer of James Madden Scholarship Fund of the 1961 Class. She was a member of St. John Episcopal Church, Sharon. Mrs. Phillips was married in 1985 to Charles A. Phillips, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Lisa Marchione and husband, Rick of Newfoundland, Pa., and Lori Englert of Shippenville; two grandchildren, Eric Marchione and Danielle Wolbert. Cody Ray Shumaker, 19, of Beech Creek, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born Aug. 7, 1985, in Lock Haven, he was the son of Shirley S. Smith Shumaker of Beech Creek and the late Sidney R. "Sid" Shumaker. Cody was a high honor student at Central Mountain High School, graduating in June 2004. During his junior and senior years, he participated in the cooperative education program. He worked at A&B Tool & Die in Lock Haven, where he strengthened his skills in layout work and general and precision machining. He planned to attend Penn College this fall. Outside of school, he was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, camp life, farming, working outdoors and automobile repair. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are a sister, Abby L. Shumaker of Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of Beech Creek; his maternal grandmother, Pauline I. Smith of New Bethlehem; his paternal grandmother, Norma L. Shumaker of New Bethlehem; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his grandfathers, M. Karl Smith and Clyde B. "Pete" Shumaker.
