Charles Dale Alcorn Charles Dale Alcorn, 85, of 4065 Brookville Street, P.O. Box 244, Hawthorn, Clarion County, died at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at his home. Born Feb. 28, 1919, in Jefferson County, he was the son of the late John J. and Cleta Jane Huffman Alcorn. Mr. Alcorn was a veteran of World War II. He owned and operated the Charles D. Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn for the past 58 years, a business he purchased from Mrs. Hardy (Anna) Sloan on May 29, 1946. Mr. Alcorn was involved in many organizations throughout his life. He was a charter member of the Hawthorn Lions club, a lifetime member of Hawthorn Volunteer Fire Department and a 50-year member of both the Masonic Lodge of New Bethlehem and the Coudersport Consistory. He was also a member of Hawthorn Presbyterian Church, where he was Sunday School treasurer and was on the church counsel. He was a member of the New Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce and Walter W. Craig Post 354 of the American Legion. He was a past member of Redbank Valley School Board and a founding member of the Hawthorn Area Water Authority. He was treasurer of the Clarion County Funeral Directors Association. Mr. Alcorn was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Award of Lions International. He enjoyed attending the men's prayer breakfast on Thursday mornings. He got the most enjoyment out of talking and sharing with his family and friends. He was a friend to anyone he met and a helping hand to anyone in need. Mr. Alcorn was known by many names including Chuck, Dale, George, Digger, Charlie and Chauncey. He was affectionately known as "Bup" by the people who knew him best. He was married Oct. 6, 1938, to the former Mary Elizabeth Spangler, and she survives. In addition to his wife of 66 years, he is survived by a daughter, Ethel G. Bullers of Hawthorn; three grandchildren, Candice Dale Powell and her husband, Donald, of Ringgold, Bradley Alcorn Bullers and his wife, Lori, of Hawthorn, and Tracy Lynn Franklin and her husband, David, of Punxsutawney; and five great-grandchildren, Courtney and Greg Bullers, Taylor and Jordyn Powell and Andrew Franklin. Along with his parents, Mr. Alcorn was preceded in death by four brothers, Daniel, Ernest, Mervin and Harry Alcorn; and his son-in-law, Bruce Bullers. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Charles D. Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn. Brosius Earl R. Brosius, 86, of Old Knox Road, Ashland Township, Knox, died at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at his home after a brief illness. Born June 18, 1918, in Heathville, Jefferson County, he was the son of John W. and Alda M. Reitz Brosius. Mr. Brosius was a U. S. Army veteran serving as a sergeant during World War II with the 203rd Field Artillery in Europe at the Battle of the Bulge. He served from February 1942 to October 1945 and received four Silver Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He was employed by Owens Illinois glass plant in Clarion and retired after 41 years as a tank foreman. Mr. Brosius was of the Protestant faith. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club at Owens Illinois and was also a life member of the Pennsylvania chapter of Whitetails Unlimited. In his earlier years he enjoyed coon hunting and bowling. He also enjoyed golf and watching sports on television. He had a hobby of horses and farming and enjoyed hunting. He was married to Louise S. Kelley, Oct. 28, 1942, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 19, 1980. He is survived by two sons, Richard D. "Bear" Brosius of Knox and Brian Brosius and his wife, Valerie, of Clarion; two grandchildren, Bethany and Jason Brosius, both of Clarion; three brothers, Charles E. Brosius and his wife, Janet, of Corsica, Kenneth R. Brosius and his wife, Joyce, of Knox, and Kermit F. Brosius and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Leeper; and one brother-in-law, Kenneth D. Kelley and his wife, Norma, of Oil City. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Merle and James Brosius; and three sisters, Kathryn Silvis, Betty Brosius and Irma Jean Rhoades. Gates, 88, of 35 Burns Road, Sligo, died at 7:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, in the Clarview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center near Sligo after a short illness. Born Jan. 16, 1916, in Toby Township, Clarion County, she was the daughter of the late William E. and Sarah C. Greenawalt Saylor. Mrs. Gates was a homemaker and was of the Protestant faith. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and working word-search puzzles. She was married Jan. 13, 1935, to Paul R. Gates, who died Nov. 16, 1995. Mrs. Gates is survived by a daughter, Phyllis J. Greenawalt of Sligo; a son, Richard Gates and his wife, Boneta, of Sligo; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gates was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Janet Carol; three sisters, Ruth and Mildred Myers and Adda McElhaney; and six brothers, Thomas, James, John, Arnold, Wilbur and Harry Saylor. Helen Louise Harrison Helen Louise Harrison, 71, of Rehobeth Church Road, Clarion, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at Oak Hill Hospital, Spring Hill, Fla. Born July 24, 1933, in Clarion, she was the daughter of the late Charles Caldwell and Helen G. Detrick Beveridge. Mrs. Harrison was in food service and worked as a kitchen manager for 21 years for the state of New Jersey. She was a member of the Moose, Eagles and VFW clubs. She was married Sept. 23, 1950, in Clarion, to Kenneth W. Harrison, who preceded her in death on Nov. 28, 1979. Born May 24, 1922, in Jefferson County, he was the son of Carl and Texas Minich Hinderliter. Mr. Hinderliter was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Germany during World War II. He was the owner and operator of Hinderliter Trucking in North Freedom for 50 years. Mr. Hinderliter was a member of North Freedom United Methodist Church. He enjoyed fishing and feeding animals. He was married June 3, 1988, in North Freedom, to the former Mary Wiant, who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by son, J. McKeown, 56, of 22975 Titusville Road, Titusville, died at 11:53 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at Titusville Area Hospital. Born Dec. 21, 1948, at Fairhope, Ala., he was the son of David and India Prince McKeown. Rev. McKeown attended Bethany Nazarene College in Bethany, Okla. He was the pastor of Hilltop Christian Fellowship Church in Pleasantville. He was previously employed by Pennzoil and Wolf's Head as a plant manager for 18 years. He had also driven for Regal Services of Ripley, N.Y. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and woodworking. Rev. McKeown was married Dec. 28, 1968, in Titusville, to the former Sharon K. Holtz, who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his parents of Titusville; two sons, Michael McKeown and his wife, Michelle, of Binghamton, N.Y., and Marc McKeown and his wife, Lisa, of Dempseytown; four grandchildren, Gabriel, London, Arial and Cameron McKeown; his father-in-law, George Holtz of Titusville; his sister-in-law, Dian McKeown of Hydetown; and two nephews, David and Aaron McKeown. Nellis, 83, of 1293 Grandview Road, Oil City, died at 4:05 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at Beverly Health Care- Oil City. Born Nov. 18, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Hugh B. and Ethel Patterson Graham. She was a resident of the Oil City area all her life and graduated in 1939 from Oil City High School. Mrs. Nellis was employed by W.T. Grant Co., Loblaws and retired from Jamesway after 14 years of service. She was a lifelong member of Reno United Methodist Church and Reno United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the ladies auxiliaries of the Salvation Army and Reno Volunteer Fire Department. Mrs. Nellis was married April 11, 1940, to Jerry E. Nellis Sr., who preceded her in death Sept. 4, 1995. Her survivors include a son, Jerry Nellis and his wife, Suzette, of Oil City; a daughter, Judith Flickner of Central City; five sisters, Marion Hagen and her husband, William, of Grafton, Ohio, Joan Slater and her husband, Lloyd W., of Columbus, Ga.; Susanne Williams and her husband, Larry, of Huston, Pa., Judith Fleckenstien and her husband, David, of Oil City, and Dorothy Stiller of Oil City; a brother, Donald Graham and his wife, Rose, of Pittsburgh; and six grandchildren, Kim Palanes and her husband, Alan, of Freedens, Kelly Maddy and her husband, Sam, of Cairnbrook, Rick Flickner of Windber, Rhonda Chappell of North Huntingdon, Michael Nellis and his wife, Kathy, of Clovis, N.M., and Amy Still and her husband, Jim, of New Oxford. Lena Lavina Moore Newell Lena Lavina Moore Newell, 87, of 1004 Grandview Road, Oil City, died at 2 a.m. Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at UPMC Shadyside Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born Oct. 9, 1917, at German Hill in the Tionesta area, she was the daughter of the late Allen and Maude Alabaugh Moore. Mrs. Newell lived in the Oil City area most of her life and was a 1936 graduate of Oil City High School. She began her working career at the Corner Restaurant in Tionesta and rode the train from Oil City to Tionesta each week. During the week, she stayed with her uncle and aunt, Archie and Lena Hepler, whom she was named after. She later worked for GTE for more than 15 years and retired in 1980. For years, Mrs. Newell was active in the Oil City Salvation Army and held several offices in the Ladies Home League and the Girl Scouts. Along with her husband, she was very active in the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department and held several offices while residing in the Dempseytown area. She also enjoyed playing bingo. She was married April 30, 1940, to Chester E. Newell, and he survives. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Darrell Newell and his wife, Katie, of Cooperstown, and Ronald Newell and his wife, Judy, of Greencastle; two brothers, Allen "Junior" Moore of Arizona and Claude Moore of Oil City; three sisters, Wilda Lynn of Titusville, Deloris Hollowell of Alabama and Phyllis Lindsey of Warren; four grandchildren, Darlene Newell of Cooperstown, Lisa Garrison and her husband, Rob, of Chambersburg, Brian Newell and his wife, Amy, of Mercersburg, and Todd Newell of Greencastle; and two great-grandchildren, Emma Newell of Mercersburg and Brody Garrison of Chambersburg. He was a 1947 graduate of Rocky Grove High School. Among his survivors are his wife, Beverly; a brother, Paul, of Colorado; and a sister, Mary Lou Ross Rogers, of Oil City.
