Piel, formerly of Sandy Lake Gerry Schmader, Lucinda William Lee Stewart, Boardman, Ohio, formerly of the Franklin area Vern M. Coe Vern M. Coe, 87, of 157 Third St., Pleasantville, died at 12:40 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, at Titusville Area Hospital. Born Jan. 3, 1920, in Pleasantville, he was a son of the late Percy and Harriet Marvin Coe. Mr. Coe was married to Mildred Paden on Sept. 23, 1946, at Frostburg, Md., and she survives in Pleasantville. Mr. Coe was a 1937 graduate of Titusville High School. He had been employed for a number of years at the former Universal Cyclops Specialty Steel Corp. in Titusville in the maintenance department until his retirement in 1982. Mr. Coe was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He entered the service on March 19, 1940, at Langley, Va., and he served as an airplane maintenance technician with the 65th Squadron at various campaigns including Egypt-Libya, Naples-Foggia, North Apennines, Rome, southern France and Tunisia. He was awarded various decorations including the Bronze Star Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge and the European-African-Middle East Service Medal. He was honorably discharged June 28, 1945, at Fort Dix, N.J., with the rank of first sergeant. Mr. Coe was a member of Bruce Shorts VFW Post 5958 in Titusville and BPO Elks No. 264, and he was a former member of the Elder Statesmen Golf League. He was proud to have earned both his private and commercial pilot's license, and he enjoyed woodworking, oil painting, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. In addition to his wife, Mr. Coe is survived by three daughters, Patricia Strawbridge and her husband, Michael, of Titusville, Debra Steen of Pleasantville and Nancy Morrison and her husband, Russell, of Pleasantville; five grandchildren, Christopher Strawbridge, Emily Hancock, Joel Steen, Lacy Steen and John Andrew Holmer; and three great-grandchildren, Matthew and Mason Strawbridge and Kylie Holmer. Also surviving are one brother, Willard Coe and his wife, Lois, of California; one sister, Ruth Amos of Lititz; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Joshua Steen; and two sisters, Helen Magee and Bessie Thornton. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home, 303 N. Washington St., Titusville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Bill Blair, pastor of Titusville First United Methodist Church, officiating. "Peg" Flis, 95, formerly of Hone Avenue and Moran Towers in Oil City, died at 2:10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, at the Golden Living Center in Shippenville following an extended illness. Born Sept. 25, 1912, in Oil City, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Margaret Hynes Frawley. Mrs. Flis graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Oil City. She was a member of St. Joseph Church in Oil City, the church Rosary Society, Prime Timers and the Belles Lettres Club of Oil City. Mrs. Flis was an accomplished bridge player, she enjoyed dogs, and she was an avid reader. She never started a book that she didn't finish. Mrs. Flis retired as the head cashier at J.C. Penney Co. in Oil City after 38 years of service. Following her retirement she had been employed by Ray L. Way Menswear for several years, and she had also been a babysitter for the Mertz family. She was married in June 1952 to Ted J. Flis, and he preceded her in death on March 21, 1965. Mrs. Flis is survived by two daughters, Peggy Flis of Bradley Beach, N.J., and Judy Flis and her husband, Jeffrey Dinger, of Oil City; one granddaughter, Monica Kline of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Benning and Louise Frawley, both of Oil City; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Flis was the last surviving member of her immediate family, and she was preceded in death by three sisters, Jane Healy, Catherine Kien and Helen Frawley; and four brothers, Jack Frawley, Ed Frawley, Jim Frawley and Bus Frawley. There will be no viewing, but the family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday in the Reinsel Funeral Home in Oil City. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph Church with Msgr. John W. Swoger, the church pastor, presiding. Internment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Paluh Beverly T. Paluh, 75, of 15401 Pithole Road, Pleasantville, died at 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at her residence. Born Nov. 19, 1931, in Erie, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Anna Grace Duarte. She was raised in Erie and graduated from Strong Vincent High School in Erie. In 1950, she was named "Miss Steel Town" as a beauty contestant. She married John E. Paluh on Feb. 20, 1954, at St. Andrew Church in Erie, and he survives in Pleasantville. They were married for 53 years and raised four children. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Paluh is survived by three sons and one daughter and their families, Tom Paluh and his wife, Ramona, of Palm Coast, Fla., his sons, Tom and Justin Paluh, and two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Annalyse; Jack Paluh and his wife, Marian, and their three children, Adam, Megan and Joshua, of Waterford; Michael Paluh and his wife, Kim, and their two children, Rachel and Michael Ethan, of Tionesta; and Anne Chase and her husband, Dan, and their children, Matt, Luke and Samantha, of Windsor, Colo. Mrs. Paluh is also survived by her sister, Anna Marie Erven, and her brother, Carl Duarte, both of Erie; and many loved nieces and nephews. The Paluhs moved to Pleasantville in 1978, where they enjoyed lifelong friends. She enjoyed crocheting as a pastime, and she was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Centerville. Mrs. Paluh served as a Eucharistic minister at St. Anthony Church in Tionesta and also at Immaculate Conception Church, where she belonged to several prayer groups. She was her family's prayer warrior, and she relished her role as mother and grandmother. She was a devoted wife and mother and loved God and her family very much, and she will be dearly missed. Piel, 94, formerly of North Main Street, Sandy Lake, died at 8:47 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, in Orchard Manor Nursing Home after a short illness. Born Nov. 20, 1912, in French Creek Township, Mercer County, she was the daughter of Clarence C. and Nancy L. "Nannie B." Buckley Dean. She was a 1930 graduate of Cochranton High School, and she graduated in 1932 from Edinboro State Teachers College. Mrs. Piel began teaching in country schools in the Utica, Milledgeville and Vogan schools, then she taught fifth and sixth grade at the Gilmore and Craig schools of Sandy Lake before teaching sixth grade at the Stoneboro school. She retired in 1974 after teaching for 32 years. Mrs. Piel had been a very active member of Sandy Lake Presbyterian Church for many years. She was a member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, the Mercer County PSERS and the Lakeview School Retirees. Mrs. Piel was a charter member of the Sandy Lake Firemen's Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution General Hugh Mercer Chapter. She married Harry A. Piel on Feb. 4, 1933, and he preceded her in death Aug. 30, 1986. Mrs. Piel is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Clair H. (Alice) Campbell of Grove City; one son, John H. Piel and his wife, Nancy, of Rockwall, Texas; and two granddaughters, Lynda C. McKay and her companion, Mark Johnson, of Warren, Pa., and Cathy L. Kellner of Stoneboro. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren, Mrs. John (Michelle) Kehoe of Douglasville, Mrs. Thomas (Mindy) Fox of Tidioute, Mrs. Perryn (Kristy) Wright of Richmond, Ind., Richard A. McClearn of Janesville, Wis., Lisa L. McClearn of Sandy Lake and David L. Kellner and his companion, Jen Bernsdorff, of Stoneboro; and eight great-great-grandchildren, Sydney and Johnny Kehoe, Lauren and Jarod Roofner, Kamryn, Kierra and Kyla Wright, and Hanna McClearn of Bergheim, Germany. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Piel was preceded in death by one sister, Esther James; and three brothers, LeRoy, Leon "Red" and Maurice Dean. Gerry Schmader, 65, of Lucinda, died early Friday morning, Nov. 9, 2007 at his home. Born Sept. 11, 1942, in Lucinda, he was the son of the late Eugene J. and Grace A. Gatesman Schmader. Mr. Schmader was the owner of Schmader Lumber Co. of Lucinda. At an early age, he worked side by side with his father, and the lumber business was his life. He was a member of St. Joseph Church in Lucinda, the Men's Society of the church and the Knights and Ladies of the Square Table. He also was a member of the Lucinda Antler Club and Penn York Lumberman's Association. He enjoyed his Corvettes, trains, NASCAR, traveling and restoring antique gas pumps. Mr. Schmader married the former Pattie Bowser on June 5, 1992, and she survives. He is also survived by the following children, Brad Schmader of Lucinda, Becky Schmader of Pittsburgh, Jackie Walney and her husband, Troy, of Lucinda, and Rick Bowser and his wife, Becky, of Pittsburgh; and two brothers and one sister, Eugene A. Schmader and his wife, Dorothy, of Lucinda, Leonard J. Schmader of Florida and Sandra K. Griebel and her husband, Edward, of Erie. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Jacob Bowser, Tyler Schmader and Crista Bowser. In addition to his parents, Mr. Schmader was preceded in death by an infant son, Gerald A. William Lee Stewart William Lee Stewart, 80, a former Franklin-area resident who has lived in the Boardman, Ohio, area for many years, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, at the Hospice House in Boardman, Ohio. Born Feb. 2, 1927, in Rouseville, he was the son of Ralph and Gladys McClelland Stewart. In the early years of his life, Mr. Stewart's family lived in the Franklin area before moving to Boardman. He graduated from Rocky Grove High School and then attended the Toledo School of Meat Cutting. He also attended Westminster College and Youngstown State University. Mr. Stewart married the former Joanne Gyder in October 1948, and she survives in Boardman. He served as a seaman 1st Class in the Pacific Theatre in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1945-46 aboard the USS Paricutin Ammunition Ship and the USS Griffin Submarine Tender. He received an honorable discharge in 1946. Mr. Stewart pursued a variety of business endeavors during a 40-year period starting in grocery-related businesses. He was a real estate agent in his later years. In addition to his wife, Mr. Stewart is survived by three sons, Robert Stewart of Johnstown, Steve Stewart of Columbiana, Ohio, and David Stewart of Franklin; one daughter, Karen Brundage of Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Jeffrey, Stephanie, Erica, Joel, Justin and Jana; and six great-grandchildren, Morgan, Katelyn, Jacqueline, Mercedes, Madison and Ethan. In addition to his parents, Mr. Stewart was preceded in death by one brother, Richard H. Stewart; and one sister, Barbara Houser. A private service will be held at Graham Cemetery in Franklin.
