    3. The Derrick, November 19, 2007: James D. Berry III, Pleasantville Richard Erickson, Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Oil City Gladys M. Furey, Polk Rev. David E. Rider, Cambridge Springs Leonard E. "Red" Risinger, Parker James D. "JD" Berry III, 69, of 21139 Cashup Rd., Pleasantville, died at 6:20 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, 2007, at his residence. Born Aug. 20, 1938, in Oil City, he was the son of the late James D. Berry Jr. and Helen Holst Berry. He was a graduate of the Hill School in Pottstown and earned a degree in agriculture from Penn State. Mr. Berry was a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict. He served in the U.S. Navy as a naval pilot and flight instructor for six years. He served in Europe, Pensacola , Fla., and Mississippi before being honorably discharged. Mr. Berry was an accomplished businessman. In 1961 he was admitted as a partner to the family's farming venture known as Windy Hill Farms and was a principal in the operation of Windy Hill Machine, Professional Aviation Services, Hogan's Palace and The Drake Mall, all of Titusville. He retired as the executive vice president of Quaker State Oil Corporation on Aug. 1, 1993, with 26 years of diligent and faithful service. He was also the chairman and C.E.O. of the Valley Camp Coal Company. Perhaps his sterling achievement and chief identity was associated with the Busted Flush Sporting Clays facility in Titusville, which he birthed, owned and operated for the past 17 years. Mr. Berry was a member of the Pennsylvania Oil & Gas Association, National Sporting Clays Association, North American Fishing Club, Titusville Elks Lodge #264, and the Moose Club. He was an avid outdoorsman whose passion was hunting for woodcock and grouse over the dog. He also fished Lake Erie extensively for perch and walleye, operating out of the Conneaut Harbor in Ohio. Surviving are two children, James D. Berry IV and his wife Emily of Loveland, Ohio, and Ann Kosche and her husband Steve of Collierville, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Michael J. Berry, Richard J. Berry, Laura D. Berry, Mathew S. Kosche and David J. Kosche; one sister, Linda Steinbuhler and her husband David of Titusville; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Berry was preceded in death by a brother, Michael T. Berry. A memorial service will be conducted with full military honors and rites at the Busted Flush (5-Stand field) at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7. Those attending are asked to dress appropriately for the weather conditions. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society and/or the Salvation Army. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home 303 N. Washington St., Titusville. Richard G. Erickson Richard G. Erickson, 52, of Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Oil City and Brookville, did Nov. 11, 2007, following an illness. Mr. Erickson served in the U.S. National Guard and the U.S. Navy. He was employed as an electrical engineer by Teltronics in Bradenton, Fla. Mr. Erickson was a member of Mensa. Surviving are his beloved wife, Tai, and their two children, William and Elizabeth; his mother, Ann Crowley Erickson of Oil City; two sisters, Rhesha Whitling and her husband, Terry, of Oil City and Erica Gravatt and her husband, Skip, of Franklin; three nieces, Tracy Whitling and her husband, Trapper Little and their daughter, Norah, all of Little Rock, Ark., Saddie and Rebecca Gravatt of Franklin; a nephew, Dr. Nicholas Whitling and his wife, Dr. Chelsee Whitling, of New Orleans, La. He was preceded in death by a niece, Morgan Gravatt. A memorial service will be held at the Tara Golf and Country Club in Bradenton, Fla. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Childhood Leukemia Foundation/HLA Registry Foundation, in honor of his beloved niece, Morgan Gravatt, or to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation in honor of his beloved daughter, Elizabeth Erickson. Gladys M. Furey Gladys M. Furey, 77, of 323 Greenlee Road, Polk, Frenchcreek Township, died at 2:55 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, 2007, at the home of her daughter and son in Grove City. Born Dec. 10, 1929, in Frenchcreek Township, she was the daughter of Robert H. and Georgia G. Mook Greenlee. She attended Valley School in Frenchcreek Township. Mrs. Furey retired from the Mercer County Home and Hospital as a nurse's aide. She also cleaned houses in the area for many years. She was a member of the North Sandy Presbyterian Church in Polk and also belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary of the Grove City American Legion Post No. 220. Mrs. Furey was a huge NASCAR fan and loved No. 17 Matt Kenseth and all other Ford drivers. She was also an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. She enjoyed visiting family and friends. Surviving are a daughter, Gayle J. Furey, and a son, Garth E. Furey, both of Grove City; two grandsons, Shawn Allen Furey of Panama City, Fla., and Jerry Lee Furey of Transfer; one great-grandson, Bailey H. Furey of Panama City, Fla.; two brothers, Robert L. Greenlee and wife Jane of Franklin and LeRoy E. Greenlee and wife Doris of Cooperstown; two brothers-in-law, Dick Furey and wife Donna of Slippery Rock and Joe Furey and wife Eileen of Sheakleyville; four sisters-in-law, Mary Ellen Elford of Mercer, Margie Locke of Hermitage, Joyce Livingston of San Bernadino, Calif., and Barb Greenlee of Polk; her extended family, the Elsie Campbell family of Mercer and Carol Viselli of Transfer; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; a son, Gary Lee Furey; a sister, Sarah Ann White; and a brother, Kenneth Greenlee. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday in the Scott A. Black Funeral Home, 99 Franklin St., Stoneboro. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Rev. Terry L. Greenlee, pastor of the Jackson Center Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Cremation will follow the service and inurnment at Oak Hill Cemetery, Sandy Lake Township, will be held at a later date. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family in care of the funeral home. Rev. David E. Rider, 60, of 442 Spring Street, Cambridge Springs, died unexpectedly in the emergency room at Meadville Medical Center, Meadville, on Friday evening, Nov. 16, 2007. Born Dec. 3, 1946, in Butler, he was a son of the late Verne Rider and Jane Barber Rider. He was married Oct. 3, 1959, to the former Linda Joyce Ley and she survives. Rev. Rider graduated in 1968 from Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa., where he received a bachelor of science degree in sociology. He continued his education and graduated from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in 1971 with a Master of Divinity Degree. >From 1971 until 1977 he served as pastor of St. Paul and St. Benedict churches, two churches in the Northern Cambria Larger Parish, Cambria County, and from 1977 until 1981 he served as pastor of the Cambridge Springs Presbyterian Church. Rev. Rider then became a contract chaplain at Polk Center and continued there until 2005 when he retired. During the past 25 years he also served for periods of time at Presbyterian churches in Plumer, Wattsburg, Cooperstown, and again at Plumer where he preached last Sunday. In addition, he was employed by the Edinboro University Office for Students with Disabilities for more than 10 years. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with people in whatever station of life they were and shared and listened to their problems. He was an honorable retiree of Lake Erie Presbytery. Surviving in addition to his wife of 38 years, Linda, are a son, Steve Rider of Cockeysville, Md., and a daughter, Sally Rider-Mattocks and her husband, Jim of Ayden, N.C.; a granddaughter, Morgan Mattocks; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Van Matre Family Funeral Home, Inc. in Cambridge Springs. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Cambridge Springs Presbyterian Church, 338 South Main Street. Interment will follow at Cambridge Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Homes Caring for Life, 2816 Elmwood Avenue, Erie, Pa. Leonard E. 'Red' Risinger Leonard E. "Red" Risinger, 76, of Parker died early Saturday morning, Nov. 17, 2007, in the Clarview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sligo following a short illness. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving with the U. S. Army in Korea, and retired from the former glass factory at Parker. Surviving are three children and two brothers.
