Milton Armagost, for many years a well known and influential citizen of Rimersburg, died at his home there Tuesday morning, December 21, 1937 at 2:30 o'clock, following an illness of several months. He was aged 73 years and 27 days. Early last summer Mr. Armagost suffered an illness which confined him to his bed for more than a month. He recovered however, and was seemingly making a complete recovery when he was stricken with a stroke of paralysis about two months ago. Since then he had been confined entirely to his home. Born November 23, 1864 at Squirrel Hill, Porter township, he was a son of the late Thomas and Susana (Hepler) Armagost. Forty-eight years ago he was united in marriage to Cora Slaugenhoupt, who survives, along with two children, J. Notes for Mary Clara Armagost: Based on remarks written by Carl Reichard in 1942. While Frank Doverspike was helping build the Reformed Church he boarded at Grandfather Armagost's and fell in love with Aunt Mary. They were married and went to housekeeping at Mudlick, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. From there they moved to the Pence farm in Clarion County, and lived there a few years. In the winter of 1884-85 they moved to Kansas. Before leaving Squirrel Hill the whole family and neighbors assembled to bid them good bye and God speed. They had four (4) children: Myrtle, Cora Alice, Harry, and Chrissie. Four (4) more were born in Kansas: Susanna, Mary, Roxie, and Frankie. My father, mother and we three (3) children took them to Lawsonham to board the train. They settled on one hundred sixty (160) acres of government land, eighteen miles from Manhattan, Kansas, which was the site of the nearest post office. They built a small house, started to farm and the first few years the drought and grasshoppers nearly starved them out. Frank was a carpenter, worked at his trade and cultivated the land that was required by the government for five (5) years to get title to the land. More About Elsie Lovina Armagost: Burial: Jun 1922, Rimmersburg Cemetery, Clarion County, Pennsylvania Notes for Dr. Adam Monroe Mohney: Dr. Mohney was an eminent Physician and Surgeon in Rimersburg, Pennsylvania. Adam remained under the parental roof until he attained the age of 24, but 8 years previous, he commenced teaching school, a profession he successfully followed for one decade during the winter seasons, while during the summer months he attended Corsica and West Millville normals. At the age of 26, he began reading medicine with Dr. Henry of West Millville, and subsequently was a student at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated from the noted institution in 1882 with the degree of M.D. From 1881 until 1887, he engaged in practice in Leatherwood, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, and then to Rimersburg, where he soon succeeded in building up a large and lucrative practice. Both professionally and financially, he met with success. He owned a elegant home and office in Rimersburg as well as a farm and other valuable property. Fraternally, Adam was a Royal Arch Mason, belonging to the chapter in Clarion, and was also a member of the Odd Fellows and the Knights of Pythias in Rimersburg. For 3 years he served as a elder in the Reformed Church, with which he was connected. Although a ardent Democrat, in politics he never aspired to office, preferring to give his undivided attention to his professional duties. The prominent place he won in his profession was accorded him in the recognition of his skill, ability, and the place he occupied in the social world is a tribute to that genuine worth and true nobleness of character which are universally recognized and honored. Ada Marie Armagost, born Sep 09, 1867 in Porter Twp., Clarion County, Pennsylvania; died Sep 09, 1923 in Curllsville, Monroe Twp., Clarion County, Pennsylvania; married Dr. George Brinton McClellan Woods Aug 25, 1887 in Squirrel Hill, Porter Twp., Clarion County, Pennsylvania; died 1940. Notes for Ada Marie Armagost: Obit: Mrs. G. B. Woods (source and date unknown) "The path of sorrow, and the path alone, Leads to the land where sorrow is unknown; No traveler ever reached that blest abode. Who found not thorns and briars in her road." It is with a sad heart that we record the departure of Mrs. Dr. G. B. Woods, who left us on the tenth day of June, 1923; but we are glad to note the fact that, with her, death had no part in, nor at the end of life's term in us. Mrs. Woods was a child of the Armagost family of Porter Twp., Clarion County, born Sept. 9, 1867. The secrets of her well ordered life, unfold the plan of kind Providence providing a parentage, devoted to the upbuilding of society, socially and morally. At the early age of 12 years Ada M., realizing the advantage of her environment, united with the Reformed church, and lived an enriched and elevated Christian life while she remained with us. On the 25th day of August, 1887, she was united in marriage to Dr. G. B. Woods, and became a helpmate in care and toil, a devoted wife, and a loving mother. In this great bereavement there is pause for rejoicing; for, in it we apprehend the Divine Finger pointing toward Heaven and Immortality. J.M.M. With the deepest of sorrow the death of one of Clarion county's choicest women is recorded, in the death of Mrs. Myra Ada Woods, wife of Dr. G. B. Woods, which took place Saturday, Sept. 9, 1923, at her home in Curllsville. For a long time Mrs. Woods had been in a somewhat critical condition from diabetes, but with a courage and fortitude of a soul that was at peace with God and man she faced the inevitable with a marvelous self control and sweetness of spirit she mingled with her friends with a cheerfulness and geniality that never had a complaint to make. The basis for this beautiful life was her adoption into the family of God and the comforting and strengthening of the presence of her Saviour given to her by the indwelling Holy Spirit. She had been a member of the Reformed Church since 12 years of age, and had always been active in Christian work. She was president of Classical Missionary Society of the Reformed Church. Her life was always "a living ! epistle known and ready" of all who knew her. For such as she "There is no death; what seems so is 5 transition." Mrs. Woods was born Sept. 9, 1867 in Clarion county, a daughter of Thomas and Susan Armagost, at Squirrel Hill, where she had her home and developed a beautiful womanhood. She was united in marriage with Dr. G. B. Woods at her home on Aug. 25, 1887, who now survives, with two children, Eugune Woods, of Sligo, and Mrs. E. E. Sayers, of Curllsville, to mourn the loss of a life companion and a wonderful mother. She is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Milton and H. L. Armagost; Mrs. J. D. Laughlin, San Francisco, Calif.; Mrs. J. B. Slaugenhoupt, Washington; Mrs. Reichard, DuBois; Mrs. Fox, Curllsville, and Mrs. Mohney, New Bethlehem. The funeral was held at her late home on June 12th, the services being conducted by Rev. A. J. Miller and Dr. J. M. McCurdy, and the beautiful committal service of the Eastern Star, of which deceased had been a faithful member, was performed by the Sligo Chapter, No. 289. More About Ada Marie Armagost: Burial: Sep 1923, Silgo Cemetery, Clarion County, Pennsylvania Notes for Dr. George Brinton McClellan Woods: George was reared on a farm where he remained until the age of 19, when he engaged in teaching public schools of his own district. During vacations he attended Clarion Collegiate Institute at Rimersburg. When he was 22 he began attending lectures at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Baltimore, Maryland, with honors, being granted a gold medal, the third memorial prize, and located his practice in Leatherwood where he remained for 2-1/2 years, then went to Curllsville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, where he remained successfully engaged in active practice. He was an enterprising and progressive citizen, and was up with the times in all that he undertook. Politically, he was a Democrat, and while not aspiring for office, did fill several minor offices including School Director and Auditor, deeming it a duty as a citizen to yield to the expressed desire of his fellow townsmen. Socially, he was a member of the Knights of Maccabees.
