Hiles, 18 Shuffstall St., Franklin Gertrude Ruth Hastings Mawhinney, Sewickley, formerly of Franklin Margaret Mabel Porter, Seysler Road, Franklin Robert Edward Crissman, 78, of Lawsonham Road, Rimersburg, died at 11:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, 2007, in his home following an illness of two and a half years. Born Oct. 4, 1929, in Templeton, Armstrong County, he was the son of the late William Homer Crissman and Vee Elizabeth Hawthorne Crissman. He attended Hawkville School in Madison Township, Armstrong County. Mr. Crissman first was employed at the brickyard in Tarrtown near Kittanning and then became a self-employed trucker, hauling for McCleary Christie Trucking Co. He was of the Protestant faith. Mr. Crissman played the guitar and sang in a country western band known as "Country Time." He enjoyed antique car shows, NASCAR racing and baseball. Mr. Crissman was married in Knox Aug. 18, 1973, to the former Kathy M. Coachman, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Troy M. Crissman and wife, Dawnann, of Pittsburgh, Dallas Crissman and wife, Debra, of Punxsutawney and Terry Crissman of Reynoldsville; three daughters, Sharon Petruny and husband, Richard, of Sheffield, Patty Hopper and husband, Chester, of New Bethlehem and Tammy King and husband, John Jr., of Indiana, Pa.; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by a half brother, Paul H. "Blaze" Cobbett of Ford City; one sister, Ruby Cobbett and husband, Harvey, of Templeton RD 2; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Richard D. Hillis Funeral Home in Rimersburg. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home with the Rev. James Swogger, pastor of the Oakland Church of God, and Pastor Randy Evans, Clarion-Forest VNA Hospice chaplain, officiating. Private interment will be in Duncan Cemetery, Armstrong County. James E. Hiles, 61, of 18 Shuffstall St., Franklin, died at 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26. 2007, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Born Sept. 24, 1946, in Franklin, he was the son of Alfred Hiles Sr. and Mary H. Moore Hiles. Mr. Hiles retired in January 2004 from Polk Center where he worked for 31 years. He had a strong Christian faith and was an active member of the Atlantic Avenue United Brethren Church. Mr. Hiles enjoyed hunting, fishing and NASCAR, especially Dale Earnhardt. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and with his grandchildren. He married Phyllis Hiles Aug. 20, 1977, and she survives. Also surviving are the following children: Brenda L. Saeli and husband, Sam Jr., Tammy S. Meyer and husband, Gene, and Michael J. Bordell and wife, Julia, all of Franklin, Tamela L., Bucklew and husband, Tom, and Denise R. Broerman, all of Barkeyville, Chad E. Hiles and wife, Becky, of Franklinton, N.C., and special family member, Chad W Goodman and wife, Amy, and their daughter, Jaidyn, of Smethport; 13 grandchildren, Nicole and Ryan Meyer, Samuel III and Stephanie Saeli, Riley and McKenna Bordell, Ronald III, Cory and Elizabeth Hawke, Hannah and Benjamin Broerman and Tekla and Logan Hiles; and two great-grandchildren, Lillie and Emma Hawke. He also is survived by three sisters, Margaret Orsino of Reno, Mary Alabaugh and husband, Ivan, and Charolette Evans and husband, James, all of Franklin; one brother, Alfred Hiles Jr. and wife, Margaret, of Reno; and his mother-in-law, Amelia Porterfield of Sharon. Mr. Hiles was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Hiles Sr.; his mother, Mary H. Moore Hiles Albaugh; his stepfather, Norman Albaugh; a brother, John P. Hiles; and a sister, Janice Bickel. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Robert W. Gardinier Funeral Home, 1315 Chestnut St., Franklin. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Atlantic Avenue United Brethren Church with Pastor Gary Small officiating. Interment will be in Lamey Cemetery. Gertrude Ruth Hastings Mawhinney, 97, of Sewickley, died peacefully Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007, following a brief medical decline. She was the wife of the late Lloyd Anderson Mawhinney, whom she married in 1930. Mrs. Mawhinney, also lovingly referred to as "Aunt Ruthie," was born Sept. 14, 1910, in Franklin, a daughter of the late Gertrude Breckenridge Hastings and Attorney Quincy Dickson Hastings. She graduated in 1928 from Franklin High School and began her studies at Westminster College, New Wilmington, that same year, graduating in 1932 with a bachelor of arts degree. In 1960, she received her master's degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh. In 1964, she was awarded a special certificate for completing 115 class hours at the University of Madrid. Professionally, Mrs. Mawhinney worked as a bookkeeper, a quality inspector for gunpowder produced for use in World War II, and as a seamstress for Horne's department store in Pittsburgh. In 1957, she received her Pennsylvania teaching certificate and thereafter committed herself wholly and enthusiastically to teaching English, Latin and Spanish. Following her retirement, she continued to relish and participate in the joy that is lifelong learning, as well as maintaining a fondness for travel. Mrs. Mawhinney was a vibrant, passionate and a gracious lady full of love, life and enthralling stories; in addition, she was a gifted and accomplished painter, weaver, seamstress and craftswoman. Her ready wit and smile, gentle laugh, genuineness, compassion, spiritual depth and inner light will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by four grandchildren, Charles Mawhinney of Fresno, Calif., Scott Mawhinney of Waxhaw, N.C., Eric Mawhinney of Fombell and Krisanne Mawhinney Mrozinski of Yellow Springs, Ohio; 21great-grandchildren; a niece, Dr. Cassandra Apgar of Glen Rock; three nephews, Dennis Hancock, John Charles Hancock and Stephen Hancock, all of Bradford, and their children and grandchildren; and a cousin, Cora Hastings of Alberta, Canada. In addition to her husband, Lloyd, Mrs. Mawhinney was preceded in death by her two children, Lloyd Dickson "Dick" Mawhinney and Diane Mawhinney Wheeler; and by her brother, John Regis Hancock. Following cremation, a funeral service was held Nov. 21, 2007, in the McDonald-Linn Funeral Home in Avalon. Burial and a graveside memorial service will be conducted by family members in the spring. Mrs. Mawhinney will be lovingly laid to rest near her husband, children, parents, grandparents and great-grandparents in the Lupher Chapel Cemetery, near the Hastings family farm outside of Franklin. Margaret Mabel Porter Margaret Mabel Porter, 66, of Seysler Road, Franklin, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca, following an illness. Arrangements are in charge of the Richard D.
