'Mike" Tarr, 1 Reed St., Oil City Sophie T. Kamienski, mass scheduled Edla Cochran Edla Cochran, 92, of Vowinckel, died Wednesday afternoon, June 27, 2007, in her home following an illness. The Ronald McDonald Funeral Home, Marienville, is in charge of arrangements. A complete obituary will be published Friday in The Derrick. Carol Ann Lynam, 67, of Little Egypt Road, Seneca, died Tuesday, June 26, 2007, in the Oil City Presbyterian Home following an extended illness. Born Sept. 20, 1939, in Oil City, she was the daughter of the late Jack B. & Dorothy Wurster Oakes. She was a graduate of Oil City High School where she was an outstanding basketball player and was a member of the undefeated Oil City Tartans girls team. Mrs. Lynam worked many years as a draftsman for Pittsburgh Pipe Cleaning Co. and Pan-Tech Engineers in Franklin. She was a devoted wife, sister, mother and grandmother and friend to many. Mrs. Lynam was married June 27, 1964, in St. Stanislaus Church, Erie, by the Rev. Joseph Resczkowski to Wilbur F. Lynam, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter and her husband, Melissa Lee and Gary Knox of Franklin; and two grandchildren, Lindsay Marie and Matthew James. She also is survived by three sisters, Virginia L. Murray and husband, George, of Oil City, Cinda S. Byers and husband, Robert, of Reno and Linda O. Driscoll of Oil City; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Mrs. Lynam was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, James Richard Oakes; and a grandson, Stephen Michael. There will be no public viewing or visitation. Funeral services will be held in the Reinsel Funeral Home at the convenience of the family. The Rev. David L. Poulson will preside. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stephen Second Century Fund, the Venango County Humane Society or to the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Condolences may be sent to www.reinselfuneralhome.com Dennis L. McCloskey Dennis L. McCloskey, 63, of Newmansville, died Wednesday, June 27, 2007, in the Clarion Hospital. Born May 8, 1944, in St. Michael, he was the son of the late Clem and Elizabeth Peele McCloskey. Mr. McCloskey retired from IA Construction where he was employed as a truck driver. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was a fan of NASCAR. Mr. McCloskey was married in Michigan March 4, 1963, to Pauline Sokolowski, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Kevin McCloskey and wife, Julie, of Shippenville and SFC Thomas McCloskey, stationed with the U.S. Army at Fort McCoy, Sparta, Wis., and his wife, Pattie; two daughters, Victoria Shebeck and husband, Tony, of Farrell and Laura Marshall and husband, Butch, of Tionesta; and 13 grandchildren. He also is survived by three brothers, Robert McCloskey and wife, Carolyn, of Clearwater, Fla., and Clem McCloskey and Larry McCloskey and wife, Debbie, all of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Kenny McCloskey; and four sisters, Nancy Trexler, Ruth McCarthy, Jean Howell and Dorothy Tomallo. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Norman J. Wimer Funeral Home of Tionesta. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. Colin Koch of New Hope, Clarion, officiating. Interment will be in Newmansville (Walters) Cemetery, Washington Township, Clarion County. Ronald P. 'Ron' Pierce Ronald P. "Ron" Pierce, 39, a resident of Bethel for the past five years, formerly of Harrisville, died at his residence of natural causes. Born Sept. 14, 1967, in Grove City, he was the son of Paul E. and Shirley L. Sutton Pierce. He was a 1986 graduate of Moniteau High School and was a graduate of Blairsville Diesel Technical School. Mr. Pierce was employed at Sanger Trucking of Bethel and formerly was employed at Pierce Trucking in Harrisville. He formerly attended West Unity Community Church in Marion Township, Butler County. Mr. Pierce enjoyed hunting and fishing. Surviving, in addition to his parents in Harrisville, are two brothers an their wives, Craig S. and Cherie Pierce of Harrisville and Jason G. and Julie Pierce of Columbus, Ohio; six nephews and nieces; his paternal grandfather, R. E. "Bunk" Pierce of Harrisville; an uncle, Scott Pierce, of Harrisville; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Delbert and Ethel Sutton; his paternal grandmother, Jacquie Pierce; a stepgrandmother, Mary Florence Sutton; and an uncle, Delbert W. Sutton. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Jamison Funeral Home, 117 N. Main St., Harrisville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the West Unity Community Church with Pastor Boyd D. Smith officiating. Interment will be in Rocky Springs Cemetery, Marion Township. Franklin St., Titusville, died at 8:04 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, 2007, in the Crawford County Care Center where he had been a resident for the past several weeks. Born Dec. 22, 1910, in Venus, he was the son of Wesley and Jessie Gross Schwab. At age 7, his family moved to Erie where he attended school until age 13 at which time the family purchased a fruit farm. He and his mother operated the farm for a year after his father's death, then moved back to Erie. Mr. Schwab's first job was a Western Union messenger. Later the rest of the family moved to Detroit, Mich., but he stayed and moved to Rynd Farm where he lived with his grandmother until he moved to Titusville. He had been employed at the Pennsylvania Refining Co. and also was an agent with Prudential Insurance. Mr. Schwab was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. He entered the service Dec. 14, 1943, in Erie and served with the 330th Army Air Force Base Unit. He was honorably discharged Dec. 3, 1944, with the rank of private first class. Following his service, Mr. Schwab farmed for several years before operating Schwab's Heating Service for 30 years. He was director of Civil Defense for 28 years; was a member of the Oil Creek Planning Commission; and was a Republican committeeman. Mr. Schwab was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church. He also was a member of the B.P.O. Elks No. 264 and the Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Schwab enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He first was married Feb. 9, 1935, to Edith Mae Drake, who preceded him in death in September 1987. He then was married in 1989 to Mary Netzler Schwab of Franklin and she survives in Titusville. Also surviving are three sons, George L. Schwab Jr. of Michigan, James Schwab and his wife, Cynthia, of Bellaire, Kans., and Richard Schwab of North Las Vegas, Nev.; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by a son, William Schwab; a daughter, Janet Schwab; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a brother, Richard Schwab; and three sisters, Ruth Schwab, Dorothy Schwab and Catherine McCauley. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home, 303 N. Washington St., Titusville. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. Jerry Gray, retired minister, and the Rev. Samuel Mabugu, pastor of the Emanuel Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery with full military rites. Gladys Snively Shontz, 92, formerly of Clarion, died Wednesday, June 27, 2007, in the Golden Living Center, Shippenville, where she had been a resident for nearly three years. Born March 26, 1915, in Greensburg, she was the daughter of Harry Thurman Snively and Mary Long Snively. She was the seventh child of eight and the last surviving member of her immediate family. She graduated from Southwest Junior High and Greensburg High School in 1933, going on to graduate in 1940 from State Teachers College of Indiana, now Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She served as treasure of Pi Omega Pi, the honorary business education fraternity. During her teaching career from 1943 to 1957, Mrs. Shontz taught at Bell Township and Washington Township High Schools, Westmoreland County, and worked for the War Department in Washington, D.C., during World War II as a Civil Service employee. On June 2, 1952, she was married in the Coraopolis Lutheran Church to Charles Jack Shontz, who survives. In 1957 her husband accepted a teaching position at Clarion College and Mrs. Shontz was hired as a business teacher at the high school where she taught a total of 35 years, retiring in 1977. She enjoyed painting, reading mystery novels, sewing clothes for herself and playing cards. She and her husband traveled extensively around the world, living a year in Burma where her husband was a Fulbright professor. Surviving, in addition to her parents, are a sister-in-law, Ruth Snively of Jeannette; and several nieces and nephews. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood St., Clarion, with Ernest Aharrah officiating. Interment will take place in the Clarion Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Clarion Free Library or to the Clarion-Forest VNA. Herbert A "Mike" Tarr of 1 Reed St., Oil City, died at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2007, in Forbes Hospice, Pittsburgh, following a brief illness. Born May 19, 1924, in Franklin, he was the son of Herbert B. and Isabelle McClelland Tarr. He attended Niles School. Mr. Tarr was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was awarded two Purple Hearts. Before his retirement, Mr. Tarr was employed by Joy Mining Machinery and then for Latshaw Motors where he retired in 1985. Mr. Tarr was a member of the Oil City VFW, Pulaski Club and the Polish National Alliance. He enjoyed helping his son at The Attic Store in Oil City until its closing. He also enjoyed working in his yard and his dog, Sparky. Mr. Tarr was married May 21, 1977, to the former Joan Caldwell, who preceded him in death March 24, 2005. Surviving are a daughter, Michele Tripodi and husband, Anthony, of Pittsburgh; a daughter-in-law, Carol Tarr of Oil City; four grandchildren and their spouses, Stephanie and Larry Rondinelli of Smethport, Craig and Michele Tarr of Erie, Curt and Lisa Tarr of Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, and Julie and Steve Conway of Pleasantville; six great-grandchildren, Olivia and Sophia Rondinelli, Samuel, Matthew and Benjamin Tarr and Bradley Tarr; a stepdaughter, Connie Hildreth of Pittsburgh; a stepson, Randy Soborowski and wife, Cheri, of Oil City; one stepgranddaughter and husband, Denice and Joel Snap of Virginia; and two step-great-grandchildren, Katelyn and Emily Snapp. He also is survived by one brother, Robert Tarr and wife, Jean, of Sandy Lake; four sisters, Anna Margaret Warner and husband, Dudley, and Betty Walker, all of Meadville, Joanne Latshaw and husband, Arden, of Cranberry and Patty Hayes of Franklin; two sisters-in-law, Wayona Tarr and Gladys Tarr; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Tarr was preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd and Wilbur Tarr; an infant brother and sister; a son, Michael Tarr; and two brothers-in-law, Bill Hayes and Homer Walker. The Huff Chapel, 312 W. Park St., Franklin, will hold private services at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Lupher Chapel Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Forbes Hospice, 115 S. Neville St., Pittsburgh, 15213; Palliative Care UPMC, 200 Lothrop St., Pittsburgh, 15213; or to a charity of one's choice. Kamienski mass scheduled A memorial Mass for Sophie T. Kamienski, who died June 1, 2007, will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Assumption B.V.M. Church, Oil City. A reception will follow in the church hall.
