The Derrick, Saturday, July 24, 2004: Rev. Marshall Joseph McCleery, East Wayne Road, Cooperstown Russell A. Sutton, 152 Pear St., Franklin The Rev. Marshall Joseph McCleery The Rev. Marshall Joseph McCleery, 90, of East Wayne Road, Cooperstown, died Thursday, July 22, 2004, after a short illness. Born Jan. 20, 1914, in Cambridge Springs, he was the son of the Rev. George A. and Ethel Artman McCleery. Although he was a high school dropout, he was converted to God Aug. 13, 1933, and graduated in 1936 from Oakdale Vocational School in Oakdale, Ky. There he fell in love with one of his teachers, Lovedy Carolyn Sheffer, also of Free Methodist parentage. They were married Dec. 12, 1936, and she survives. Together they served in several pastorates of the Free Methodist Church in which he was ordained a deacon in 1939. Rev. McCleery completed the home study course prescribed by his denomination for ordination as an elder but continued to pursue a college course of instruction at Houghton College in Houghton, N.Y., graduating there in 1950. On July 19, 1958, he and several other individuals banded together to organize the Evangelical Wesleyan Church of North America. He became the first bishop of this denomination and was instrumental in founding various local congregations and served as administrator, evangelist, pastor, Bible college president, church camp meeting ground builder, and anywhere else his services were needed. Rev. McCleery served for many years on the governing committee of the Inter-Church Holiness Convention. He was a director on the board of Christ's Ambassadors, Inc. in the pursuit of Christian missions. He continued to serve his own denomination on various standing boards and committees within weeks of his death. Rev. McCleery had an interest in the cause of Christian radio for several years, having directed programs titled "Evangel of Christ" and "Word of Hope." Surviving are his wife, Lovedy, of more than 67 years; one daughter and husband, Carolyn M. and Gottlieb Sperl of Williamsville, N.Y.; two sons and their wives, Charles W. and Lela McCleery of Summerfield, Fla., and George H. and Cheryl McCleery of Northville, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one sister, Naomi Rossey of Rocky Grove; one aunt, Erla McCleery of North East; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, the Rev. McCleery was preceded in death by one brother, Paul; and two granddaughters. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, in the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home, Titusville. Visitation also will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, June 29, in the Summit Campground Tabernacle, East Wayne Road south of Blask Ash Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the tabernacle with Bishop William L. Sarber of Cooperstown officiating. The Rev. Charles E. MacDonald of Grafton, W.Va., will deliver the funeral message. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Russell A. Sutton Russell A. Sutton, 59, of 152 Pear St., Franklin, survived by his wife, Donna, and local children, Rick Wilson of Oil City and Kelly Holmes of Franklin, died of a lengthy illness at 9:20 a.m. Friday, July 23, 2004, in UPMC Northwest, Franklin.
