Lahr Sr., New Castle, native of Clarion County Lena I. Schmitt, Franklin John Lawrence "Larry" Slater, Lecanto, Fla., formerly of Oil City Leo Snyder, Shippenville Maude C. Beach, 83, of Sugar Creek Station, formerly of East Bissell Avenue and Moran Towers in Oil City, died at 10:25 a.m. Thursday, July 29, 2004, at UPMC Northwest, Franklin, following an extended illness. Born May 3, 1921, in Oil City, she was a daughter of the late William R. Watson and Elyda Ann Cross Perry. A homemaker, she was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to music. She and her husband were both amateur musicians and played the guitar together at home. She also enjoyed being with her grandchildren. Mrs. Beach was a member of First Church of God in Oil City. She had belonged to the missionary society and was the secretary for many years. She was married Dec. 29, 1950, in Oil City, to Clarence W. Beach, who survives and is a resident at Sugar Creek Station. Surviving are three children and their spouses, Cyril Robert and Mary Snyder of Chittenango, N.Y., the Rev. James Leverne and the Rev. Barbara Snyder of East Canton, Ohio, and Bonnie and James Stoudt of Oil City; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Dorothy Weingard and Florence Beach, both of Oil City. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Jane; a brother, William R. Watson Jr.; and a grandson, James Robert Heckathorn. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Reinsel Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the First Church of God, 11 E. Eighth St., Oil City, with the Rev. Brenda Snedden, church pastor, presiding. Interment will follow at Rockland Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the First Church of God of Oil City. Caroline L. Brace, 78, of Summerville, died early Friday, July 30, 2004, at the Lifecare Hospital of Pittsburgh. Paul D. Ditty, 80, of Knox, a veteran of World War II and a former Knox postmaster and councilman, died Thursday evening, July 29, 2004, in Clarion Hospital. Born Dec. 19, 1923, in Summerville, he was a son of John and Mary Guthrie Ditty. He was married Feb. 11, 1949, to the former June K. Knight, and she survives. Mr. Ditty served with the Army for four years as an MP in Europe during World War II. After the service he worked at Knox Glass and helped his father with the building of Ditty Town. From 1947 to 1981, he was employed at the Knox post office, retiring as postmaster. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, where he was an elder, a trustee, a Sunday school teacher and a member of the consistory. Mr. Ditty was a 32nd degree Mason and was a member of the Coudersport Consistory and a 50-year member of the Edenburg Lodge in Knox. He also belonged to the Knox Volunteer Fire Department, Community Action and the Knox Lions Club. He formerly was a member of Knox Borough Council for 18 years. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening and watching NASCAR races. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Deborah Stewart and her husband, William, of Wilson, N.C., and Paula Hannold and her fiance, Mike Cotherman, of Knox; three grandsons, Michael Stewart and his wife, Debra, of Streetsboro, Ohio, Nathan Stewart and his wife, Marie, of Henderson, N.C., and Wesley Hannold of Knox; and three great-grandchildren, Cassie, J.J. and Cheyenne. Also surviving are one brother, Jack Ditty of Knox; two sisters, Florence McElhatten and her husband, Kenton, of Mt. Lebanon and Joan Freeman and her husband, George, of Knox; and his good friends and neighbors, William and Leann Haun. He was preceded in death by his parents and by one brother, Robert Ditty. Himes, 92, of Summerville RD 1, a homemaker, died Thursday evening, July 29, 2004, at Laurelbrooke Landing in Brookville. Born Sept. 20, 1911, in Milwaukee, she was the daughter of Herbert R. and Verda L. Shook Bartlett. She and Ray A. Himes were married Nov. 7, 1928, in Detroit, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 6, 1971. Mrs. Himes previously worked in the Brookville and Summerville school cafeterias. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Summerville, where she formerly served as the director of Bible school, taught Sunday School and enjoyed the church chalk talks. She formerly served as president of the Library Club and was a member of the Jefferson/Clarion Artist Association. She enjoyed artwork, painting and baking wedding cakes. Surviving are two sons, Ray A. Himes and his wife, Leslee, of Hubbard, Ohio, and W. Allen Himes and his wife, Linnea, of Jamestown, N.Y.; a daughter, Mrs. Haven "Barbara" Reitz of Summerville; six grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son in 1937 and a brother, Gilbert Bartlett, in 2001. Lahr Sr., 84, of State Road, New Castle, a native of Clarion County, died Thursday evening, July 29, 2004, in Jameson Hospital of New Castle. Born June 14, 1920, in Lucinda, Clarion County, he was a son of Frank and Theresa Huefner Lahr. He was married June 29, 1943, to the former Lois L. Shrecengost, and she survives. Mr. Lahr served in the U.S. Marine Corps from May 8, 1944, until June 4, 1946. He retired in 1980 from Johnson Bronze Co., where he had worked 40 years. He was a machine setter. Mr. Lahr was a member of Mary, Mother of Hope Parish of New Castle. He was a life member of the Coachman Club and the Castle Pistol Club, and he also belonged to the Eintracht Singing Society, the Perry S. Gaston Post of the American Legion and the National Rifle Association. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five sons, Charles E. Lahr Jr. and his wife, Tina, of Edinburg, Frank Lahr and his wife, Dianne, of New Castle, Michael Lahr of Clover, S.C., Joseph Lahr and his wife, Debra, of Ellwood City and Donald Lahr and his wife, Doreen, of New Castle; two sisters, Dorothy Glasser of Youngstown, Ohio, and Agnes Wier of Montoursville; two brothers, Edward Lahr and James Lahr, both of Clarion; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Schmitt, 96, of The Caring Place, died at 6:30 a.m. Friday, July 30, 2004, at The Caring Place. Born Oct. 19, 1907, in Bovard, she was a daughter of Harper and Ellen Nicely Hogg. She was a midwife for Dr. Hockenberry in Butler and was formerly employed in the dietary department of Slippery Rock University and White's Rest Home in Utica. She was a member of Wesleyan Methodist Church. Mrs. Schmitt enjoyed singing, listening to hymns, poems and piano music. She was married May 22, 1946, to William M. Schmitt II, who preceded her in death Sept. 28, 1978. She was previously married on Aug. 18, 1927, to Wilbert Smith, who preceded her in death in 1964. Surviving are two sons, Wilbert D. Smith and his wife, Treva, of Polk, and Gilbert A. Smith and his wife, Sue, of Victorville, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Virginia M. Heister of Franklin; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Frank (Eleanor) Swogger of Meadville. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Stephen and Harper Hogg; three sisters, Alice Barron, Melvina Murdock and Twila Keas; and a grandson, Ronald Heister. John Lawrence "Larry" Slater, 51, of Lecanto, Fla., formerly of Oil City, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at his residence under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Citrus County, Fla. Born Sept. 19, 1952, in Monterey, Calif., he was a son of the late Richard B. Slater and Sylvia Beers Slater Kaness. He was employed as a television cable communication engineer in the communications industry until his illness. He was an avid boater and also enjoyed traveling, music and playing his guitar. Mr. Slater was of the Methodist faith. He was married Sept. 2, 1983, in Reno, Nev., to the former Patricia Fagley of Clarion. Surviving are his wife, Patricia Slater; a son, John James, and his friend, Tammy, of Homosassa Springs, Fla.; and a daughter, Karla Ann Ruter of Wadena, Minn. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Jessie and Bradley Pipkorn of Minnesota and Michael and Kyle Cleaver of Homosassa Springs; and one great-grandson, Mason Pipkorn of Minnesota. Survivors also include five sisters, Nora Heber of Rouseville, Vicki Schall and her husband, Phil, and Beth Sutley and her husband, Dan, all of Oil City, Juanita "Gale" Kaness of Allentown and Tammi Manning and her husband, Arnie, of Meadville; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard J. Slater; his stepfather, Lawrence E. Kaness; and a brother-in-law, Louis H. Heber. There will be no visitation. Private memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family. The family suggests that memorials be made to local hospice agencies or a charity of one's choice. Born Aug. 3, 1926, in Oil City, he was the son of Daniel H. and Helen Baker Bell. He was a resident of North East since 1991. Mr. Bell was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Navy. He was the former owner and operator of J and J Grocery Store in Rockland for several years. He also drove a gasoline tanker in Erie for Atlantic Richfield. Mr. Bell was a member of Rockland United Methodist Church and an associate member of Greenfield Baptist Church. He was a charter member of the Rockland Sportsman Club and the Rockland Volunteer Fire Department, and a member of the Allegheny Valley Lodge No. 552 F&AM, the Scottish Rite Valley of New Castle Consistory, the Scottish Rite Valley of Oil City Lodge, and the Jesse G. Greer VFW Post 1835 in Franklin. He loved hunting and fishing. Mr. Bell was married Jan. 18, 1947, to Esther Jean Cotherman Bell, who survives. Born June 19, 1922, in Oil City, he was the son of Harry G. and Florence Patterson Freeman. He was a graduate of Oil City High School and attended Franklin Business School. He worked for General Electric for nine years and had worked at Dobsworth Trucking Co. He also delivered newspapers for the Erie Dispatch, The Erie Times, The Wall Street Journal, and USA Today. Mr. Freeman was a member of the Senior Dance Club, Mercyhurst Senior Citizens and a bowling league. He was a former member of Boy Scout Troop 131 in Erie. Mr. Bell enjoyed traveling, crafts and fairs. Surviving are a son, Donald Freeman of Erie; a daughter, Judy Mattson and husband, James Sr., of Erie; a grandson, James Mattson Jr. of Erie; and a sister, Marjorie J. Hummel of Grove City. She was a member of the New Bethlehem Presbyterian Church and enjoyed golfing, bingo and her family. She was married to Clair H. Jacox, and he preceded her in death in 1982. Born Sept. 30, 1919, in Franklin, she was the daughter of Floyd R. and Florence Thompson Urey. She was a 1936 graduate of Rocky Grove High School. In her early years, she worked at the former Manifold of Franklin. She retired in 1979 from the Polk State School and Hospital (now Polk Center), where she worked in the dietary department. She was a homemaker and loved spending time with her family. She was of the Protestant faith. She was a member of the Fredonia American Legion Post 191 Ladies Auxiliary, and she loved to play bingo. She was married Oct. 24, 1945, to Charles L. McMurray, who preceded her in death April 28, 1995. Surviving are two sons, Dr. F. Robert McMurray and wife, Patricia, of Pittsburgh, and Michael R. McMurray of Oil City; a grandson, David A. McMurray and wife, Carrie, of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; and a brother, F. Richard Urey of Oil City. She was preceded in death by a son, Alan C. Harry George Ross Jr., 73, of 163 Merrill St., Franklin, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at UPMC Northwest's Transitional Care Unit in Oil City. Born July 29, 1931, he was a son of Harry G. Ross Sr. and Pearl C. Wheeler Ross. Mr. Ross was a member of the Seneca Volunteer Fire Department for more than 25 years and was active with the Seneca Volunteer Fire Police. He was retired as a machinist for Joy Manufacturing. He enjoyed woodworking and wild flowers. He was married Nov. 24, 1951, to the former Ruth Geraldine Mortimer, who survives. Leo Edward Snyder, 72, of Shippenville, died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at his home. Born Sept. 5, 1931, in Lucinda, he was the son of Leo Edward Sr. and Catherine Schwabenbauer Snyder. He attended St. Joseph elementary and high schools in Lucinda. Mr. Snyder served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked for Owens Illinois in Clarion as a highlift operator until his retirement in 1992. For the past six years, he worked at Shelley's Restaurant in Marianne. Mr. Snyder was a member of St. Joseph Church in Lucinda. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and bingo. Surviving are a brother, James Snyder and wife, Janet, of Lucinda; a sister, Virginia Crum and husband, James, also of Lucinda; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Robert A., Joseph and Arthur Snyder. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Joseph Church, Lucinda, with the Rev. Swacha, of 441 Washington St., Denver, formerly Oil City, died Saturday, July 31, 2004. Born Nov. 6, 1932, in Oil City, he was the son of Alex and Marya Swacha. Mr. Swacha, who was born and raised in Oil City, served with the U.S. Navy in the Korean War. He loved hunting and fishing and his gun shop, which he owned until the mid-1990s. He was retired from Oil Well Supply and was a member of the American Legion. He was married in June 1979 to his wife, Josephine, who survives in Denver. Also surviving are two sons, Ray Swacha of Reno, and Daniel Swacha of New Hampshire; two daughters, Patty Swacha of Oil City, and Carolyn Williams of Victory Heights; two sisters, Francis Hajduk of Pine Grove and Ann Leykayf of Florida; two nephews, Father Stanley Swacha of Sharon, and Alex Swacha of Alexandria, Va.; and a niece, Mary Kay Bowser of Erie. Chall, 48, of 5 East Bissell Ave., Oil City, died unexpectedly on Saturday, July 31, 2004, in her home. Born Sept. 8, 1955, in Oil City, she was the daughter of Lee and Norma Long Norman of Rouseville. She attended schools in Michigan. She was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, camping outdoors and playing bingo. Hanson, 67, of Marienville, Forest County, died Aug. 1, 2004, in the Kane Community Hospital in Kane. Born May 20, 1937, in DuBois, she was the daughter of Grace Reasinger Anderson of DuBois and the late Irvin Anderson. She was married Dec. 2, 1956, to James E. Hanson and he survives. She was a member of the Marienville United Methodist Church and a member and past matron of the order of Easter Star, Marienville chapter. Mrs. Hanson was a teacher's aide at the East Forest High School in Marienville and later worked as a secretary at the West Forest school. She retired from that position in June 1993. Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are two sons, Brad and his wife Sally Jo Hanson of White Oak, Pa., and Brian Hanson of Marienville; a daughter and her husband, Robin and Steven Scull of DuBois; three grandchildren, Alicia Sites of Marienville and Nicholas and Zachery Scull of DuBois. Her father preceded her in death. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Ronald McDonald Funeral Home in Marienville. Jeannerett, 90, formerly of Shippenville, died Aug. 1, 2004, in the Beverly Health Care facility in Clarion. Born Aug. 27, 1913, in Homer City, she was the daughter of Erma Rue Keibler Bickerstaff and George William Bickerstaff. They preceded her in death. She was married to Donald L. Jeannerett who preceded her in death in 1991. Mrs. Jeannerett was a member of the Church of God and formerly belonged to the Tidioute United Methodist Church and the Shippenville United Methodist Church. She was a past member of the Eastern Star, Shippenville Civic Club and the Shippenville Ladies Auxiliary to the fire department. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. William (Kathleen) Stroop of Shippenville; a brother, George William Bickerstaff of Mars, Pa.; a granddaughter, Mrs. Paul (Jennifer) Carter of Deale, Md.; and a great-granddaughter, Bethany Autumn Carter of Deale, Md. Joshua Michael King, 21, of 3 Edgewood Drive, Oil City, died suddenly of natural causes on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at this residence. Born Nov. 12, 1982, in Franklin, he was a son of Joseph C. and Laura L. Dale King. He would have been a senior at Slippery Rock University where he was majoring in business management with hopes of taking over his father's business. He enjoyed working for his father at King's Landscaping and also playing on the company softball team. Mr. King was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan and enjoyed going to the games with family and friends. He also enjoyed hunting and going to the movies. Mr. King will be remembered as a gentle young man who loved his family and friends dearly. He was a member of St. Joseph Church. Surviving are his parents, Joseph and Laura King of Oil City; his maternal grandparents, Arthur L. and Sally M. Dale, and his paternal grandparents, Joseph T. and Nancy L. King, all of Oil City. Born March 5, 1917, at Buttermilk Hill, she was the daughter of Wayne and Clara Bankson Hastings. Mrs. Master graduated in 1934 from Franklin High School. During her lifetime, she worked at Cunningham Dairy in Oil City and was a bookkeeper for Slicker Pipe and Tool Co. and Kahle's Coal Company, both of Knox. She retired from National Fuel Gas in Oil City. Mrs. Master enjoyed gardening, working in her flowers and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a volunteer for an adult literacy program and was a member of the Pennsylvania Independent Petroleum Producers (PIPP). Music was an important part of her life and she instilled that in her family. She was married April 27, 1938, to J. Paul Master. He preceded her in death on July 25, 2001. Frank Joseph "Sonny" Scalise Sr., 73, of New Kensington, Pa., a frequent visitor to the area and a local vacation camp owner, died Friday, July 30, 2004. He died as a result of injuries received in a two-vehicle accident on Route 36 in Farmington, Township. Born Feb. 26, 1931, in New Kensington, he was a graduate of Arnold High School. He was a resident of the New Kensington and Arnold areas for most of his life. Mr. Scalise worked for Allegheny Ludlum, Brackenridge, for several years. For the next 38 years, he owned and operated the Starlite Bar in New Kensington and later the Cheswick Bar & Hotel in Cheswick. He also owned real estate and rental properties in the New Kensington area. Mr. Scalise served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army in the Korean War, attached to the medical corps, and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Lower Burrell. He also belonged to the Eagles in New Kensington and was a social member of the Kinloch Fire Department in Lower Burrell and the Outdoor Life Lodge in Fawn Township. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Marcella I. Gaworski Scalise; three sons, Frank J. Scalise Jr. and his companion, Tammy Dombroski of Arnold, Mark A. Scalise and his companion, Barbara A. Elwood of New Kensington, and Anthony D. (Lisa) Scalise of Arnold; a daughter, Pamela A. Tantlinger and her fiance, Michael Benco of New Kensington; a brother, Patsy (Margie) Scalise of New Kensington; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
