    3. The Derrick, April 29, 2005: Mary B. Altman, DuBois, Clarion native Paul Leroy Carnathan, Lobaugh Hill Road, Rimersburg Nathan Warren Gourley, New Bethlehem Ronald L. Krauss, Suffield, Conn., formerly of Clarion Evelyn A. Kohlman Slack, Macungie, formerly of Oil City Christopher Isaac Niederriter, Venus Ida B. Ace Shoup, Emlenton Donald Stover Shumaker, New Bethlehem Mary B. Altman Mary B. Altman, 91, of 409 E. Sheridan Ave., DuBois, died Thursday, April 28, 2005, at her residence. She lived in Emporium from 1936 until 1978 when she moved to DuBois. Born July 24, 1913, in Clarion, she was the daughter of Samuel A. and Grace Master Carroll. She was a 1932 graduate of St. Petersburg High School. Mrs. Altman had worked at the Devlund Pharmacy in Emporium. She was a member of Lakeside United Methodist Church in DuBois since 1979. While in Emporium, she was a member of the United Methodist Church, a charter member of the WSCS and a member of the Lydia Circle. She was a member since 1948 of the Emporium Chapter No. 101, Order of Eastern Star, and was a Golden Star. During World War II, Mrs. Altman was a local member of the War Finance Committee, selling war bonds. Mrs. Altman was a homemaker and enjoyed crocheting, quilting, square dancing and spending time at "Romar Lodge," a summer home located near Stevenson Dam in Cameron County. She was married Aug. 24, 1933, to Roy F. Altman, who died March 10, 1978. Surviving are a daughter, Eleanor "Ellie" Klees of DuBois; two grandsons, Daniel Klees and Douglas Klees; and three great-grandchildren, John Klees, Michael Klees and Sarah Parker. She also is survived by one sister, Mrs. George (Hazel) Kinchen of Jamestown, Pa.; two sisters-in-law, Anna Marie Snyder and Margaret Carroll; and two nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Altman was preceded in death by two sisters, Lena Melaney and Goldie Shoup, and one brother, Howard Carroll. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Mohney-Yargar Funeral Chapel Inc., 142 W. Long Ave., DuBois, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday in the Lakeside United Methodist Church, DuBois. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the church with the Rev. Robert Zilhaver and the Rev. Dick Burns officiating. Interment will follow in Gilmore Cemetery, Sinnemahoning. Paul Leroy Carnathan Paul Leroy Carnathan, 75, of Lobaugh Hill Road, Rimersburg, died at 6:05 p.m. Monday, April 25, 2005, in the intensive care unit of Clarion Hospital. Born Jan. 5, 1930, he was the son of Dale and Ruth Gourley Carnathan. He was a 1947 graduate of Union High School, Rimersburg. Mr. Carnathan was a member of the U.S. Army as a gunner in the 155th Howitzer Co. Artillery Battalion during the Korean War. He worked for General Electric in Erie and attended cabinetry-making school. Mr. Carnathan was a member and served as president of Union Local 441 in Knox. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Rimersburg. Mr. Carnathan enjoyed being with his family, farming, gardening, woodworking and camping. His wife of 51 years, the former Martha Kay Mortimer, survives. Also surviving are three sons and their wives, Eric and Susan Carnathan of Rimersburg, Randy and Rhonda Carnathan of Latrobe and Steve and Marge Carnathan of Rimersburg; eight grandchildren, Adrian, Alex and wife, Mindy, and Mitch of Rimersburg, Curtis and Jordan of Latrobe, Jessica, Alicia and Jacob, all of Rimersburg; and one great-grandson, Hunter, of Rimersburg. He also is survived by four sisters, Betty Walter of Loveland, Conn., Lucille Kifer and husband, Everett, of Clarion, Eve Trainer and husband, Jerry, of Clarion and Jane Reed of Rimersburg; many nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Della Carnathan of Rimersburg. In addition to his parents, Mr. Carnathan was preceded in death by a son, Gregory Paul Carnathan, in 1963; one sister, Gladys Eddy; and one brother, Gary Carnathan. Private funeral services were held Thursday in the Varner Funeral Home in Rimersburg with the Rev. John Phillips, pastor of the New Bethlehem Church of God, officiating. Interment was in Rimersburg Cemetery with full military honors accorded by the ceremonial squads of the Rimersburg VFW and the Rimersburg American Legion Post. The family requests memorials be made to a charity of one's choice. Nathan Warren Gourley Nathan Warren Gourley, 23, of New Bethlehem, died early Thursday, April 28, 2005, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born Nov. 15, 1981, in Brookville, he was the son of Larry P. and Janet Hetrick Gourley of New Bethlehem. He was a graduate of Redbank Valley High School where he was a great athlete in wrestling, football and track. Mr. Gourley worked for G&G Gas of which he was part owner. He enjoyed mountain climbing with his brothers, motorcycle riding, skiing, traveling and caving. He loved family get-togethers and his many good friends. He also had a love of working with wood and carpentry. Mr. Gourley was fun loving and took good care of his grandparents and nieces. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two brothers and their wives, Scott P. and Ember Gourley and Eric N. and Heather Gourley, all of New Bethlehem; one sister, Wendy Gourley of New Bethlehem and her fiance, Scott Smith; and seven nieces, Sarah, Samantha, Suzannah, Emily, Megan, Clara and Mia. He also is survived by his grandparents, Jim and Fern Gourley and Gladys Hetrick, all of New Bethlehem; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and his girlfriend, Chelsea McKinney of St. Petersburg. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Warren Hetrick. Friend may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the Rupert Funeral Home in New Bethlehem. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Leatherwood Church on Olean Trail and Church Road, Porter Township, Clarion County, with the Rev. Rob Folen, interim pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the Leatherwood Cemetery. Krauss, 70, of Suffield, Conn., formerly of Bourbonnais, Ill., died Monday, April 25, 2005, in St. Francis Hospital, Hartford, Conn. Born May 15, 1934, in Clarion, he was the son of Russell and Zelma Wentling Krauss. He was a graduate of Clarion High School and received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering in 1955 from Penn State. Mr. Krauss served in the U.S. Army in the late 1950s. He worked for the Chicago Bridge & Iron Co., retiring with more than 40 years of service. Mr. Krauss was a member of the First Church of Christ, Congregational, in Suffield, Conn. He was an avid reader and history buff and loved music and the outdoors . Surviving are his wife, Patricia, of 45 years; two sons, Kevin Krauss and Linda Keene of Enfield, Conn., and Paul Krauss and wife, Stella, of DuBai, United Arab Emirates; and four grandchildren, Sarah, Emily, Michael and Nicholas. He also is survived by a sister, Martha Weidner of Turbotville; a brother and his wife, Paul and Mary Krauss of Olympia, Wash.; several nieces and nephews; and his mother-in-law, Clara Jones of Suffield. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 5, in the First Church of Christ, Congregational, 81 High St., Suffield. Interment will be private at the request of the family. Christopher Isaac Niederriter Christopher Isaac Niederriter, infant son of Fred J. and Brenda Smalley Niederriter, 696 Old State Route 157, Venus, was stillborn Wednesday, April 27, 2005, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, James Golden and Jason Niederriter, and one sister, Hannah Niederriter, all at home; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John S. "Jack" and Josephine L. Niederriter; and maternal grandparents, Billy O. and Shirley I. Smalley. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Lamey Cemetery. The Morrison Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Ida B. Ace Shoup Ida B. Ace Shoup, 79, of Emlenton-Clintonville Road, Emlenton, Scrubgrass Township, Venango County, died at 6:36 a.m. Thursday, April 28, 2005, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca, after a brief illness. Born March 11, 1926, in Big Ben, Scrubgrass Township, she was the daughter of William G. and Margaret B. Murray Ace. She was a 1944 graduate of Emlenton High School. Mrs. Shoup was a member of the Scrubgrass Stone Church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed flower gardening, crocheting and knitting. Mrs. Shoup was married in Emlenton June 15, 1947, to Donald R. Shoup, who died June 20, 2004. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. John (Linda) Gerstner of Emlenton; three grandchildren, Jeff Adams and Jodi Black of Knox, Mrs. Dan (Dawn) Fletcher of Emlenton and Brian Moore and wife, Heidi, of Harrisville; six great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Shoup was preceded in death by a daughter, Marsha F. Moore, Aug. 31, 2001; four brothers, Clarence, Donald, Melvin and Charles Ace; and one sister, Erma Lawrence. Donald Stover Shumaker Donald Stover Shumaker, 73, of New Bethlehem, died Wednesday evening, April 27, 2005, in Clarion Hospital. Born Feb. 12, 1932, in Armstrong County, he was the son of Howard and Helen Doverspike Smumaker. Mr. Shumaker was a 26-year veteran of the United States Air Force where he won numerous B-52 bomber flight competitions After his retirement from the Air Force, he worked in hotel management and most recently worked at WalMart in Clarion. Mr. Shumaker was a member of the Oakland Church of God in Distant and held membership in the VFW, American Legion and Eagles Club, all of New Bethlehem. Surviving are his wife, Kyong Park Shumaker; two daughters, Kelly Slominski of Minto, N.D., and Kimberly Shumaker of Houston, Texas; and three grandsons, Dylan Slominski, Trevor Slominski and Drew Slominski, all of Minto, N.D. He also is survived by two brothers, Willard Shumaker of Distant and Jay Shumaker of Barnesville, Ohio; and four sisters, Marguerite Marsiglio of Jeannette, Pauline Heilman of East Brady, Janet Carlos of Greensburg and Mary Jane Everett of Florida. In addition to his parents, Mr. Shumaker was preceded in death by two brothers, William Shumaker and Clyde "Pete" Shumaker. There will be no visitation. A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Distant, Armstrong County. The Rupert Funeral Home in New Bethlehem is in charge of arrangements. Evelyn A. Slack Evelyn A. Slack, 85, of Macungie, formerly of Oil City, died Thursday, April 28, 2005, in Lehigh Center, Lower Macungie Township. Born in Oil City, she was the daughter of the late Millard and Alyce Davis Kohlman. Mrs. Slack was a member for many years of Calvary United Methodist Church in Oil City. She did volunteer work in Oil City for the Oil City Library, museum, YWCA, Belles Lettres Club, Oil Creek & Titusville Railroad, Meals on Wheels and the American Red Cross. Surviving are a sister, Phyllis Vogan of Allentown, and seven nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Slack was preceded in death by three sisters, Winnes Hynes, M. Neta Kohlman and Lovina Schwakopf. Friends may call from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Bachman, Kulik & Reinsmith Funeral Home, 17th and Hamilton streets, Allentown. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the funeral home. Interment will be in Bethany United Methodist Cemetery, Wescosville.
