"Grumpy" Phillips, Knox Frank L. Sakal, Nebraska, Tionesta Pearl M. Swonder, Erie, formerly of Oil City Edward L. "350" Wade Sr., Eau Claire Ruthann Baughman Ruthann Baughman, 79, formerly of 97 Beech Drive, Franklin, died at 9:50 a.m. Thursday, March 31, 2005, in Sugar Creek Station. Born June 23, 1925, in Franklin, she was the daughter of William and Laura Sibble Shepard. She was a graduate of Franklin High School and received a bachelor of science and master's in education from Clarion University, where she was a member of the Honor Society and Kappa Delta. Mrs. Baughman was a secretary at Franklin High School for 33 years and then taught at the Franklin Middle School for 13 years before retirement. She served on the Franklin School Board, coached softball and was a cheerleader adviser. Mrs. Baughman was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church where she served as a deacon and as a member of the finance committee. She served on the board of the Franklin Civic Operetta Association and volunteered for numerous organizations. Mrs. Baughman enjoyed crafting, bowling, card playing and collecting numerous items. She also was an avid Franklin sports fan and was scorekeeper for the basketball team. She was married March 19, 1948, to Gerald L. Baughman, who died Aug. 23, 1995. Surviving are three daughters, Barb Hancox and husband, Richard, of Kennerdell, Kathy Grace and husband, Steve, of Columbus, Ohio, and Jan Baughman of Pittsburgh; a son, Jeff Baughman and wife, Michelle, of Hermitage; nine grandchildren, Casey Hancox and wife, Jen, of Pittsburgh, Keeley Hancox of Kennerdell, Josh Weinberg of Atlanta, Ga., Jeremy Grace of Tampa, Fla., Allison Grace and Gillian Grace of Columbus, Ohio, and Seth Baughman, Graham Baughman and Evan Baughman of Hermitage; and a great-grandson, Graham Hancox of Pittsburgh. She also is survived by a sister, Helen Gulnac and husband, Gene, of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Baughman was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Adams. Friends may call from noon to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Huff Chapel, 312 W. Interment will be in Franklin Cemetery. Erda Aldine Clark Erda Aldine Clark, 93, of DuBois, formerly of Bradford and Clarington, died Wednesday, March 30, 2005, in the DuBois Nursing Home, DuBois. Born Aug. 12, 1911, in Blue Ridge, Forest County, she was the daughter of William Wolford and Hattie June Cook Rossey. She was a welder during World War II, working at the Dresser Manufacturing Co. in Bradford for 30 years. After her retirement, she returned to Clarington. Mrs. Clark was a member of the Clarington United Methodist Church and was a volunteer at the Snyder Memorial Nursing Home in Marienville. She was married Aug. 16, 1929, to Terry M. Clark, who died in 1968. Surviving are a daughter, Charlotte L. Burfield of DuBois; a son, Kenneth M. Clark of Clarington; seven grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren. She also is survived by one sister, Orpha Nicklund of Jamestown, N.Y. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Clark was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Cemetery, Clarington RD. Patricia J. Drayer Patricia J. Drayer, 72, of Summerville, died Thursday morning, March 31, 2005, in the Clarion Hospital. Born June 9, 1932, in Limestone Township, Clarion County, she was the daughter of Ralph and Olive McAninch Kennemuth. She was married May 2, 1950, to Herbert J. Drayer, who died April 20, 1997. Mr. and Mrs. Dryer owned and operated Drayer's Service Center in New Bethlehem for many years before retiring. She was of the Protestant faith. Mrs. Drayer enjoyed quilting, ceramics and sewing. Surviving are a son, H. John Drayer and wife, Christy, of Rimer; a daughter, Teri Rhoads and husband, Greg, of Summerville; and five grandchildren, Justin Drayer, Jessica Rearick, Jordan Drayer, Jillian Rhoads and Jace Rhoads. She also is survived by two brothers, Robert Kennemuth of Shannondale and Frank Kennemuth of Punxsutawney; and two sisters, Gloria Shick of Shannondale and Judy Gray of Corsica. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Drayer was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey; and two brothers, Ralph and Darl Kennemuth. Ethel Virginia Underwood Garber Ethel Virginia Underwood Garber, 80, of Pittsburgh, died early Thursday morning, March 31, 2005, in Pittsburgh. Born Nov. 29, 1924, in Henderson, W.Va., she was the daughter of Harvey T. and Effie Moore Underwood. Mrs. Garber was a homemaker. She was married May 17, 1944, to John Garber Jr., who died Dec. 29, 2004. Surviving are a daughter, Patricia George and husband, William, of New Bethlehem; a son, John Michael Garber and wife, Linda, of Mount Lebanon; four grandchildren, Dianna Bain of New Bethlehem, Douglas George of Harrisburg and Kim Mackin and Robin Garber, both of Mount Lebanon; and seven great-grandchildren. She also is survived by two brothers, Harvey Underwood of High Pointe, N.C., and Herman Underwood of Pittsburgh. Hazel Kyler Hazel Kyler, 96, of Larwill, Ind., a retired teacher, died at 8:20 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2005, in Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw, Ind. Born Jan. 12, 1909, in Troy Township, Whitley County, Ind., she was the daughter of Charles C. and Phoebe Starner Snyder. She was a 1926 graduate of Pierceton High School, Pierceton, Ind., received her A.B. degree in 1930 from Manchester College, Manchester, Ind., and her master's degree in 1940 from Columbia University, New York. She also did additional degree work in the early 1950s at Manchester College. Mrs. Kyler began teaching Latin and history in 1930 at North Webster High School, North Webster, Ind. For several years her Latin students were participants in the state Latin contest in Bloomington, Ind. In 1940, she began teaching social studies in Goshen, Ind., and in 1949, she began teaching fifth grade at Etna Troy, Ind., Grade School, retiring in 1974 after 391/2 years of teaching. Mrs. Kyler was married in 1943 to Garth E. Kyler, who preceded her in death. They were lifelong residents of Richland Township, Whitley County. During the next 10 years following her retirement, Mrs. Kyler and her husband traveled widely in Europe, Asia, Africa and the continent of A ustralia. She was a member of the Pierceton Presbyterian Church and the National Retired Teachers Association. Surviving are a son, Lynn E. Kyler of Jackson Center; three grandchildren, Mrs. Mark (Carole) Krizon of Williamsburg, Va., Mrs. Cyrus (Rachael) Parker of Wilson, N.C., and Garth R. Kyler and wife, Karen, of Larwill, Ind.; and seven great-grandchildren. She also is survived by a brother, C.D. Snyder of Wabash, Ind. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Kyler was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Moore; and a great-granddaughter, Sarah Krizon. "Grumpy" Phillips, 56, of Knox, died of cancer at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at his residence. Born Jan, 7, 1949, in Limestone, he was the son of William and June Girt Phillips. Mr. Phillips was a member of VFW Post No. 2145 of Clarion for 25 years and from 1997 to the present, he did maintenance work there. He formerly worked at Saylor's Farm in Monroe Township. He loved doing construction. He also was a member of the Rod & Gun Club of Knox and attended the Limestone Baptist Church. Mr. Phillips enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his family. He was married Sept. 22, 1980, to Lois I. Conner, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Jeffery Phillips and his fiancee, Melisa, of Knox and Joseph Phillips and wife, Eva, of Georgia; and his loving guard cat, Peanut. He was looking forward to the birth of two grandchildren. Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Sandra Lee Wiser; two brothers, William Fred Phillips and Jeffery Steven Phillips; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harold and Ruth Conner. His body was cremated at his request. There will be no public visitation. Services and interment will be held at the convenience of the family. Sakal, 63, of Nebraska, Tionesta, died Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at his home of diabetes and congestive heart failure. Born Aug. 14, 1941, in Aliquippa, he was the son of John Sakal, who survives, and the late Mary Debosh. He graduated in 1959 from Aliquippa High School where he lettered in football and basketball. He received a football scholarship to the University of Kentucky, graduating from there in 1964. Mr. Sakal served as a first lieutenant in the Army Military Police, USAR Division in Germany. He was a member of the Aliquippa Football Hall of Fame. Mr. Sakal coached St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Louisville, Ohio, to the state finals in 1974 and was "Coach of the Year" in Ohio three times. He coached football, basketball, wrestling and tennis. He was married Aug. 12, 1967, to Valerie J. Sobeski, who survives. Also surviving are his father; one son, Frank Sakal Jr. and wife, Jennifer, of Florida; three daughters, Tamara Sakal, Melissa Meeks and husband, Michael, and Melinda Asel and husband, Daniel, all of Nebraska; and three grandchildren, Sherilyn Sakal, Cassandra Bowser and Sabrina Meeks.. He also is survived by one sister, Mary Ann Defelice and husband, Dan, of Pittsburgh; two brothers, John Sakal and wife, Sue Ann, and Thomas Sakal and wife, Rosemary, all of Florida; an uncle, Joseph DeBosh and wife, Irene; and numerous nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews. Swonder, 79, of 5204 Lexington St., Erie, formerly of Oil City, died Thursday, March 31, 2005, after being stricken at her home. Born Feb. 26, 1926, in Oil City, she was the daughter of John and Valeria Ryczko Majdanik. Mrs. Swonder was a legal secretary in the J.D. Trax Law Office in Oil City before her retirement in 1952. She was a member of St. George Church, Erie, and had been a Cub Scout den mother. Mrs. Swonder enjoyed crafts and flower gardening. She was married in 1948 to Edward J. Swonder Sr.., who survives. Also surviving are a son, Edward J. Swonder Jr. and wife, Mary, of Erie; and four grandchildren, Alexandra, Adrienne, Alexander and Christina Swonder. She also is survived by a sister, Irene Bienko of Dover, Ohio; and a brother, John Majdanik of McKeesport. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Swonder was preceded in death by two brothers, the Rev. "350" Wade Sr., 71, of Eau Claire, died at 4:45 p.m. Thursday, March 31, 2005, in Butler Memorial Hospital following an illness. Born Jan. 11, 1934, in Argentine, Butler County, he was the son of Harold Lester and Emma Amelia Ekis Wade. Mr. Wade was a lifelong truck driver working for Toth Trucking, Modern Transportation, Lucas Coal Co. and finally retiring from Pierce Trucking Co. near Harrisville. While driving truck, his radio handle was "350." He was a Protestant by faith. Mr. Wade was a social member of Paul W. Wood VFW Post 7840 in Cherry Valley. He enjoyed his family and the art of woodworking. Mr. Wade was married Aug. 22, 1956, to the former Betty J. Riddle, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Deborah J. Heckathorne of Polk and Mrs. Barry (Cheryl A.) Eiler of Eau Claire; one son, Edward L. Wade Jr. of Boyers; two granddaughters, six grandsons and one great-granddaughter. He also is survived by two sisters, Elsie Hayes of Pittsburgh and Mrs. Robert (Patty) Downing of New Castle; one brother, William "Bill" Wade of Emlenton; and a number of nieces and nephews.
