Walsh, Old Route 8, Titusville Mabel Gleason Olney Harkness Mabel Gleason Olney Harkness, 92, of Pre-Emption Road, Geneva, N.Y., formerly of Oil City, died Saturday, April 23, 2005, at her hone. Born Jan. 20, 1913, in Oil City, she was the daughter of Charles Wilcox Gleason, a petroleum engineer, and Mabel Amy Fulton Gleason, a school teacher. She was a graduate of Oil City High School and was a 1935 graduate of the University of Rochester with a major in biology. In the 1940s, she received training in library science at the University of Rochester and in 1962, she received a master's degree in Canadian-American History from that university. Mrs. Harkness had resided in Rochester and then Brighton from her college days until 1967. She was the librarian at Stromberg-Carlson Co. from 1942 until 1951; was librarian with the Monroe County Bookmobile from 1952 to 1953; and then worked at the library of Rochester Civic Garden Center from 1953 until 1967. Her first husband, Benjamin Olney, an acoustical engineer with Stromberg-Carlson, died in 1963. Her second husband, Bernard E. Harkness, a taxonomist with the Monroe County Parks System, died in 1980. With his retirement in 1967, they moved to Pre-Emption Road in Geneva and enjoyed their beautiful cobblestone home with its gardens. In 1986 and again in 1993, Mrs. Harkness published updated editions of the Seedlist Handbook, which originally was published by Mr. Harkness. The editions won an award from the American Rock Garden Society, one of the many organizations of which she was a member. Mrs. Harkness had many interests including horticulture and gardening, local history, poetry and current events. She was a trustee of Keuka College from 1971 to 1980 and received an honorary doctorate from that college at its 2003 commencement. Surviving are many cousins including Walter Muth and wife, Carol Sue, of Mount Desert Island, Maine; Marilyn Wilson of Newark and Gail Hyde-Cutcliffe of Rochester; many friends and a dedicated group of caregivers. Eighth Avenue, Clarion, died Friday, April 22, 2005, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born Oct. 25, 1926, in Avella, Washington County, he was the son of Edward and Mary Ann While Kuhns. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Navy as a boatman 3rd class. Mr. Kuhns worked as a teacher starting in Salem Township, then teaching in Redbank Valley School District and next taught in Santa Anna Unified Schools in California for 37 years, retiring there. He was a member of the Santa Anna Educators Association, California Teachers Association, N.E.A. and the Foundation to Assist California Teachers, serving as chairman of the board for eight years. Mr. Kuhns was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Clarion and the Clarion American Legion Post. He was married June 4, 1948, to Josephine V. Long, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, James Allen Kuhns and wife, Melody, of Pekin, Ill., Richard Lee Kuhns and wife, Deborah, of Abbottstown and Jeffrey Lynn Kuhns of McSherrystown; and eight grandchildren, Sarah Kuhns, Joseph Kuhns II, Jennifer, James, John, Jessica, Jaclyn and Patrick Kuhns. He also is survived by a sister, Mildred Bish of Blasdell, N.Y. In addition to his parents, Mr. Kuhns was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Charles Kuhns; and seven sisters, Emma Wangler, Jeannette Ross, Stella Shuey, Viola George, Patricia Davis, Beatrice Shuey and Mary Bish. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Goble Funeral Home in Clarion. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with the Rev. Harold O. Barbara Ann Roser McFadden Barbara Ann Roser McFadden, 73, of 59 Buchanan St., Rouseville, died at 1:07 a.m. Saturday, April 23, 2005, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Born March 20, 1932, in Indiana, Pa., she was the daughter of Walter Irvin and Rosalia Barbara Glasstetter Roser. Mrs. McFadden had been employed as manager of SMI Cleaning Co. and then started her own janitorial service, Jake's, in 1992, retiring in 1999. She was a member of St. Venantius Church in Rouseville and was a member of the Rouseville Volunteer Fire Department. Mrs. McFadden was an avid bingo player and loved to cook and spend time with her grandchildren. She was married in Rynd Farm Nov. 19, 1948, to Thomas E. McFadden, who died Oct. 12, 1995. Surviving are three sons and their wives, Randolph T. and Rhonda McFadden of Tampa, Fla., Joseph E. and Ginger McFadden of Rouseville and Timothy J. and Lynn McFadden of Fredricksburg, Va.; a daughter and husband, Barbara A. and Gary Tuten of Tennessee; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by five brothers, Irvin R. Roser of Phoenix, Ariz., Richard Roser of Rouseville, Ronald Roser and Samuel Roser, both of Seneca, and Daniel Roser of Oil City; a sister, Catherine Rybak of Oil City; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. McFadden was preceded in death by one brother, John C. "Jack" Roser; and an infant sister, Esther Roser. Bruce Alan Taylor Bruce Alan Taylor, 46, of Orlando, Fla., husband of the former Faith Ann Battin of Cranberry, died Wednesday, April 20, 2005, in Orlando. Kathryn R. Truitt Kathryn R. Truitt, 84, of Fairmount City, died Friday evening, April 22, 2005, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Born Sept. 20, 1920, in Mahoning Township, Armstrong County, she was the daughter of William and Myrtle Cramer Darr. Mrs. Truitt was of the Protestant faith and was a homemaker. She was married Feb. 3, 1945, to Howard Wayne Truitt, who died May 31, 2002. Surviving are three sons, Ronald W. Truitt of New Bethlehem RD 1, William Truitt of Mayport and Joseph Truitt of Fairmount City; two daughters, Mrs. Michael (Melinda) Henry of Fairmount City and Karen Robinson of Rimersburg; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She also is survived by a sister, Janet Smith and husband, Don, of New Bethlehem; and a brother-in-law, Ira Truitt and wife, Betty, of Fairmount City. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Truitt was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Brenda Truitt; two brothers, John Darr and Clifford Darr; and three sisters, Evelyn Craig, Beulah Hawk and Clody Crissman. Walsh Patrick J. Walsh, 49, of Old Route 8, Titusville, died Saturday, April 23, 2005, in Titusville Area Hospital following a massive heart attack. Born March 17, 1956, in Butler, he was the son of F. James "Jim" and Jacqueline M. Bartlett Walsh. He was a 1974 graduate of Butler High School where he was a member of the varsity diving team. He was an All-American diver at Grove City College where in 1978 he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration. Mr. Walsh was a sales representative for 22 years in the Titusville area for Zep Manufacturing. He returned to school to continue his education and was in his final year at Clarion University School of Nursing. Mr. Walsh was a deputy game warden in the Titusville area for more than 20 years. He was a member of St. Titus Roman Catholic Church in Titusville and was raised in St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Butler. Mr. Walsh was married Jan. 31, 1981, to Terrie M. Renninger, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Patrick J. Walsh Jr. of Pittsburgh; a daughter, Lindsey Walsh of Titusville; his parents, Jim and Jacqueline Walsh of Butler; a sister, Colleen M. Ryan of Butler; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler.
