"Kate" Smerker, Marble John Joseph Waitkus, 272 Congress Hill Road, Franklin Cynthia Sue Benson Cynthia Sue Benson, 53, of 1044 North St., Oil City, died early Friday morning, Feb. 4, 2005, at her residence. Born Feb. 28, 1951, in Titusville, she was the daughter of Robert and Marie Crisman Weber. Mrs. Benson was a day care worker at Franklin Day Care. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and enjoyed shopping, sewing and collecting Precious Moments figurines and Boyd's Bears. Mrs. Benson was married in Wallaceville Oct. 26, 1976, to Lawrence L. Benson, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Stephanie Hughes and husband, Kenny, and Gretchen Wilhere, all of North Huntingdon; four grandchildren, Darian and Jackson Hughes and Nicholas and Matthew Wilhere, all of North Huntingdon; and a stepson, Scott Benson of Johnston, R.I. She also is survived by five brothers, Terry Weber, David Weber and Jack Weber, all of Franklin, Edward Weber of New Castle and Denny Weber of Clintonville; three sisters, Linda Benson and Beth Snyder, both of Oil City, and Debby Schmitt of Stanhope, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Benson was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Robert Weber and Walter "Spud" Weber; and two sisters, Phyliss Weber and Paula Weaver. Michael Lee "Mick" Bresowski Michael Lee "Mick" Bresowski, 56, of Hill City Road, Seneca, died at 10:45 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at his residence. Born Jan. 20, 1949, in Franklin, he was the son of Michael Frank and Flora Belle Whitmer Bresowski. He attended public schools in Franklin. Mr. Bresowski enlisted in the U.S. Army Sept. 5, 1967. After serving two tours in Vietnam and earning numerous commendations, he was honorably discharged June 3, 1970. He was employed as a grinder and welder for 16 years at Conair in Franklin until his health no longer permitted him to work. Mr. Bresowski enjoyed camping, golfing, spending time with his many friends and beloved dog, Pip. He also took great interest in Civil War history. He was married in Oil City July 10, 1979, to Margie S. Anderson, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Brian M. Bresowski at home; a daughter, Andrea L. Brinkley and husband, Rick, of Franklin; and one grandson, Hayden Michael Brinkley of Franklin. He also is survived by a best friend and cousin, Richard Flinchbaugh of Seneca; four brothers-in-law, Terry Anderson, Aaron Anderson, Lyman Kightlinger and Homer Hill and wife, Mary Ann; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Bissell Ave., Oil City, 16301. Mabelle Val Jean Crawford Mabelle Val Jean Crawford, 72, of 8826 Route 949, Sigel, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, in West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born Feb. 4, 1933, in Roseville, Jefferson County, she was the daughter of Gilmore Brown Sr. and Effie Furman Brown. Mrs. Crawford was the kitchen manager at Truckstops of America for more than 20 years. She was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Sigel and the Altar-Rosary Society of the church. Mrs. Crawford was married in Brookville June 20, 1953, to Lester Clair Crawford, who died Jan. 15, 2002. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Edward (Laurie) Schickel of Sigel; three granddaughters, Mrs. Todd (Krista) Geer, Mrs. Corey (Mikki) Oakes and Elizabeth "Beth' Williams, all of Sigel; and four great-grandchildren, Luke and Tucker Geer and Lindzey and Logan Oakes. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Crawford was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Crawford Lechner; and one brother, Gilmore Brown Jr. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today in the Immaculate Conception Church in Brookville with the Rev. DeLoe, 54, of May Road, Knox RD, died Friday evening, Feb. 4, 2005, at his residence following a lengthy illness. Born March 19, 1950, in Beaver Township, Clarion County, he was the son of Vern L. and Patricia Bickel DeLoe. Mr. DeLoe had been employed by PennDOT until his illness. He attended Mount Joy United Methodist Church at Knox RD. Mr. DeLoe was an avid hunter and sportsman. He was married April 22, 1978, to the former Mary K. Fye, who survives, along with his mother of May Road, Knox RD. Mr. DeLoe was preceded in death by his father; his father-in-law, Wilbert Fye, and his mother-in-law, Aliene Fye; his paternal grandparents, Arthur W. and Maude DeLoe; and his maternal grandparents, Carl and Rose Bickel. "Chip" Driscoll, 82, of 120 Shady Lane, Seneca, died at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at his residence. Born May 3, 1922, in Oil City, he was the son of James and Anna Krietner Driscoll. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Mr. Driscoll worked at Worthington until his retirement. He attended St. Stephen Church. Mr. Driscoll was a member of the Oil City VFW. He enjoyed bowling, stamp collecting and coin collecting. On Nov. 22, 1952, he married the former Betty Lockwood Myers, who died Aug. 19, 1983. Surviving are a stepson, Larry G. Myers of Mineral Point, Wis.; three grandchildren, Larry G. Myers Jr., of LaCrosse, Wis., Kim Myers of Polk and Melissa Whitling, who cared for him at home; and a daughter-in-law, Marge Myers of Polk. He also is survived by two brothers and their wives, Daniel and Arlene Driscoll of Oil City and Francis and Marion Driscoll of Stockton, Calif.; four sisters, Anna Burgi of Seneca, Erma Kirchner of Kingsville, Ohio, Marie Flowers of Erie and Joan Garbacz of Oil City; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Driscoll was preceded in death by a stepson, Harry Myers; two brothers, James Driscoll and John Driscoll; two sisters, Margaret Sustak and Noreen Dickenson; and a special friend, Phyllis Rankin. Angela Glass (Glaz) Angela Glass (Glaz), 102, formerly of 319 Emerald St., Oil City, died at 11:18 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, in the Oil City Presbyterian Home following an extended illness. Born Sept. 25, 1902, in Oil City, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Smalec Sekula. She was educated in the Assumption BVM School. Mrs. Glass was the oldest member of the Assumption Church and was the last member of the founding pioneers who started the parish. She also was a member of the Rosary-Altar Society of the church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed reading, crocheting, gardening and writing letters in Polish for friends who did not have the knowledge so they could send mail to Poland. Mrs. Glass was a loyal member of the Republican Party and was judge of elections in her ward for many years. She was married in the Assumption Church May 13, 1918, to Martin Glaz Sr., who died in 1956. Surviving are six children, Sophie Rekas and husband, Frank, and Mary Coogan, all of Oil City, Edward Glaz and wife, Theresa, of North Olmsted, Ohio, Martin Glaz Jr. and wife, Audene, of Poland, Ohio, Eugene Glaz and wife, Shirley, of Saegertown, and Connie Petulla and husband, Dick, of Lady Lake, Fla.; 22 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She also is survived by two daughters-in-law, Josephine Glass of Oil City and Susan Glaz of Chapmanville; one son-in-law, John Konetsky of Erie; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Glass was preceded in death by two sons, Joseph Glass and Chester Glaz; a daughter, Irene Konetsky; a son-in-law, George Coogan; one brother, Michael Sekula; and one sister, Bernice Hudick. Graham, 70, of 104 Sixth St., Reno, died at 6:15 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, in UPMC Northwest, Seneca. Born Feb. 11, 1934, in Oil City, she was the daughter of John and Mary Grace Tarr Thomas. She was a graduate of Rocky Grove High School. Mrs. Graham had worked for several years for Valley Grove School District and then worked as an aide at Venango Manor, retiring there. She was a member of Atlantic Avenue United Brethren in Christ Church, Franklin. Mrs. Graham was married Feb. 14, 1958, to Charles E. Graham, who survives. She loved to camp with her husband and family at Wildwood Acres Campgrounds in Hanover, Ohio. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are six children, Shari Mallory and husband, Terry, of Rocky Grove, Linda Greenlee and husband, LeRoy Jr., of Franklin, Charles E. Graham and wife, Malinda, of Rocky Grove, Steven D. "Pee Wee" Graham and wife, Pamela, of Reno, Gregory T. Graham of Washington,. D.C., and Scott A. "Guppy" Graham of Reno; and five grandchildren, Erika Greenlee and Courtney Greenlee of Franklin, Autumn Mallory of Rocky Grove and Nathaniel "Bo" Graham and Rebecca Lee Graham of Reno. She also is survived by two brothers, William D. Bean and wife, Shelia, of Massachusetts, and Jay Thomas Fornof and wife, Christine, of Danville; and a sister, Mary Vogan of Ohio. Eleanor Haggerty Eleanor Haggerty, 96, a resident of Clarview Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Sligo, for the past year and a half, formerly of Rimersburg, died at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in the emergency room of Clarion Hospital. Born July 26, 1908, in Upper Hillville, Clarion County, she was the daughter of Isaac and Ida Myers Houser. Mrs. Haggerty was an active member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Rimersburg. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Haggerty first was married to George A. Best, who died in 1942. She then married Presley Haggerty, who preceded her in death. Surviving are two daughters, Thelma Varner and husband, Arvonne, of Rimersburg, and Martha Glosser of Pittsburgh; two sons, Nelson Best and wife, Faye, of Rimersburg, and Allen Best of Mayville, N.Y.; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a grandson; and eight brothers, William Tobias, Wallace James, Milton Roy, David Harold, Theodore Roosevelt, Samuel Lee, Isaac Daniel and an infant, Charles Emery Houser. Jordan Charles E. Jordan, 77, a resident of 679 Barkeyville Road, Grove City, for the past 52 years, died at 5:45 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, in United Community Hospital, Grove City, following a three-month illness. Born Aug. 22, 1927, in Grove City, he was the son of Charles E. and Martha Holland Jordan. He was a veteran of World War II. Mr. Jordan retired Aug. 31, 1992, from General Electric of Grove City where he was a material controller for 20 years. He was very active with his church, Mount Olive Baptist Church of Grove City, where he served as a trustee. Mr. Jordan enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting with his family and time spent with his grandchildren. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He first was married May 26, 1951, to Pauline Miller, who died March 6, 1985. He then was married Aug. 21, 1987, to Pauline A. Pierce, who died in July 1999. Surviving are five children, Charlene Jordan of Grove City, Charles E. Jordan Jr. and wife, Jeri, of Milwaukee, Wis., David W. Jordan and wife, Lisa, of Campbell, Ohio, Douglas A. Jordan and wife, Helen, of Polk, and Kenneth L. Kiesel, 69, of 310 Pacific St.., Franklin, died at 1:50 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in the Transitional Care Center of UPMC Northwest, Oil City, following an extended illness. Born March 7, 1935, in Oil City, she was the daughter of Joseph and Stella Kowal Dubiel. Mrs. Kiesel attended the Oil City schools. She was a former dental assistant to Dr. R.L. DeShong in Oil City. Mrs. Kiesel was a member of St. Patrick Church, Franklin. She was happiest as a homemaker and enjoyed camping and spending time with her family. Mrs. Kiesel was married in St. Joseph Church, Oil City, July 14, 1956, to Carl M. Kiesel, who died Oct. 18, 1999. Surviving are three children, Janet Anderson and husband, Mark, of Meadville, and Joyce Gramley and husband, Sidney, and Michael K. Kiesel and wife, Carolyn, all of Franklin; and seven grandchildren, Jennifer and Ryan Anderson of Meadville, Dustin and Amber Gramley, and Carley, Emiley and Stephanie Kiesel, all of Franklin. She also is survived by her mother-in-law, Stella Kiesel of Franklin; a sister and husband, Mary Ann and Ronald Cotterman of Oil City; and nieces and nephews, Joseph Cotterman and wife, Sue, and their children, Allison and Lindsay, of Las Vegas, Nev. William Frederick Reed William Frederick Reed, 80, of 1419 Shaffer Run Road, Oil City, died at 9:14 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, in UPMC Presbyterian, Pittsburgh. Born July 21, 1924, in Oil City, he was the son of Clarence R. and Louise Heyl Reed. Mr. Reed was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy as an air radioman in the South Pacific from 1942 to 1945. After World War II, Mr. Reed was employed by Oilwell Supply as a foundry worker and mold maker and then was employed as a mold maker for various foundries in the area. He then was employed by Mushroom Transportation as a dispatcher and retired from Koppers in 1986 where he was a general laborer. Mr. Reed was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church. He also was a member of the VFW, Pulaski Club, Moose and Eagles. Mr. Reed was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed sports. He loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren and enjoyed watching them play sports. He was married May 23, 1944, to the former Doris Spies, who survives. Family and friends shared in celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary in 2004. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three sons, John W. Reed and wife, Patti, of Oil City, Thomas L. Reed of North Carolina and Bruce A. Reed and wife, Laura, of Seneca; three daughters, Barbara A. Doverspike and husband, Lyle, of Polk, Nancy J. Boggs and husband, David, of Dempseytown, and Laura L. Lehnortt of Oil City; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He also is survived by a sister, Clara Louise Confer of Alabama; and several nieces and nephews. Rodney Von Rhodes Rodney Von Rhodes, 47, of Brookville RD 1, Meade Chapel, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at his home. Born Sept. 17, 1957, in Brookville, he was the son of Edward D. and Thyra K. McAninch Rhodes. He was a 1975 graduate of Brookville High School and a 1979 graduate of Westminister College in New Wilmington. Mr. Rhodes was president of the family business, Rhodes Salvaging Co. Inc. of New Bethlehem and Punxsutawney. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed sports. Surviving are his parents of Brookville; and a son, Rodney Scott Rhodes, and daughter, Jaclyn Michelle Rhodes, both of Brookville. He also is survived by two sisters, Shirley Jean Rhodes of Dunedin, Fla., and Mrs. Michael R. (Cathy) Rhodes Keefer of Clarion; and one nephew, Bradley Seidle of Brookville. Michelle Lee Slaugenhoup Michelle Lee Slaugenhoup, 34, of Strattanville, died early Saturday morning, Feb. 5, 2005, in Clarion Hospital. Born April 11, 1970, in Clarion Hospital, she was the daughter of Douglas and Judy Stromyer Slaugenhoup. She attended Clarion-Limestone High School. Ms. Slaugenhoup worked for Wolf's Camping Resort in Knox. She was a Protestant. She loved her cats, Fuzzy and Tigger. Surviving are her parents of Strattanville; her maternal grandmother, Doris Stromyer of Shippenville; aunts and uncles, Janice Lutz and husband, Ed, of Shippenville, Larry Stromyer and wife, Betty, of Tylersburg, Shirley Guth and husband, Alfred Jr., of Fryburg, Donna Fasemyer of Naples, Fla., and Marie Bish of Shippenville; and numerous cousins. "Kate" Smerker, 93, of Marble, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, following a brief illness while a resident of Clarview Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Sligo. Born Dec. 15, 1911, in Wilsal, Mont., she was the daughter of Parker and Dena Lutz Thompson. Mrs. Smerker was the last surviving member of her immediate family as well as the last surviving member of the graduating class of 1930 at St. Joseph School in Lucinda. She was married in Immaculate Conception Church, Clarion, Dec. 28, 1932, to Laurence M. Smerker, who died March 28, 1989. Mrs. Smerker and her husband owned and operated the Knox Hotel from 1944 to 1946 and the Marble Hotel from 1946 to 1976. She was an excellent cook and catered many functions over the years. She was a member of St. Michael Church in Fryburg and the Rosary Society of the church. Mrs. Smerker enjoyed poetry and her family. In her earlier years, she was an avid bingo player. Surviving are 10 children, Deene Prowell and husband, Elzie, and Mary Ellen Hopkins and husband, David, all of Camp Hill, Barbara Heasley and J. Michael "Mick" Smerker and wife, Janet, all of Erie, Jeanne Snyder and husband, Larry, of Duke Center, Paul Smerker and wife, Lisa, of Vero Beach, Fla., and Margaret "Peg" Weaver and husband, Tom, Laurence G. Smerker, Dennis Smerker and wife, Marlene, and Jim Smerker, all of Marble; 29 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Smerker was preceded in death by a son, Donald Smerker, Sept. 27, 1944; twin great-granddaughters Feb. 2, 1999; and a sister, Elizabeth Staab. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Faller Funeral Home Inc. in Fryburg. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Michael Church, Fryburg, with the Rev. David Poulson, pastor, presiding. Interment will be in St. Michael Church Cemetery, Fryburg. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Michael Church, Fryburg, or the Msgr. Francis Theobald Fund of the church. John Joseph Waitkus Sr. John Joseph Waitkus Sr., 92, of 272 Congress Hill Road, Franklin, died at 9:37 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, in The Caring Place, Franklin. Mr. Waitkus had resided in the Franklin area for the past 16 years in the home of his son. Born April 4, 1912, in Oil City, he was the son of Joseph and Valeria Chulbus Waitkus. He was a 1932 graduate of Oil City High School. Mr. Waitkus had worked for Quaker State Corp. for 33 years and then worked as a construction inspector for PennDOT until his retirement. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Oil City. In his earlier years, Mr. Waitkus enjoyed and played a number of sports including football and baseball and participated in track. Mr. Waitkus was married in 1942 to the former Theresa M. Pullease, who died in 1986. Surviving are a son, John Joseph Waitkus Jr. and wife, Katherine, both of Franklin; two grandchildren, Tracy Keller and husband, Eric, of Olean, N.Y., and Jeffrey Waitkus and his companion, Cherish Stewart, of Durham, N.C.; and one great-grandson, Kyle Waitkus of Durham, N.C. Mr. Waitkus was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ann Winger; and two brothers, Joseph Waitkus and Tony Waitkus. There will be no visitation. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph Church, Pearl Avenue, Oil City, with Msgr. John W. Swoger, pastor, presiding. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Oil City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Oil City Library, 2 Central Ave., Oil City, 16301; or The Caring Place, 103 N. 13th St., Franklin, 16323. The Hutchinson Funeral Home, 201 Bissell Ave., Oil City, is in charge of arrangements.
